Opening Ceremony

The opening ceremony took place on Sunday evening.
Paulo Mac Donald Ghisi, Mayor of Foz do Iguaçu, underscored the partnerships with the public and private sectors, working together with universities and other important actors on energy issues.
Jorge Miguel Samek, Brazilian Director-General of Itaipu Binational, noted United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) work on promoting the discussion of renewable energy around the world. He underscored the problems related to climate change and the need to continue developing in a sustainable manner, stressed that the energy is fundamental for development, and said that 91% of the total Brazilian energy supply comes from hydroelectricity.
Kandeh Yumkella, UNIDO Director-General, said energy is at the core of development and underscored that high energy prices will have fundamental impacts on industrialization. Yumkella noted UN-ENERGY objectives on energy and poverty, energy efficiency and renewable energies. He emphasized that Africa has the worst energy poverty and the largest number of Least Developed Countries (LDCs). He highlighted integration of renewable energy technologies and systems, technology acquisition and development, policy and regulations, financing, and South-South cooperation.
José Antonio Muniz Lopes, President of Eletrobrás, labelled Itaipu as a “temple of electricity,” and highlighted Electrobrás remodelation and internationalization goals, inviting present ministers and other representatives from Africa and Latin America to explore possibilities for collaboration.
Edison Lobão, Minister of Mines and Energy, Brazil, noting some criticism, said the Brazilian ethanol policy is a success not just for fuel supply, but also for reducing greenhouse emissions. He noted the Brazilian automobile flexible engines that allow use of either alcohol or gasoline. He said the accusation of the ethanol programme damaging food security is inadequate, nothing that European countries produce more biofuel than Brazil, and emphasizing oil prices influence in food supply.
After listening to the speakers, delegates were presented with a life performance from the Orquestra de Câmara do Paraná and the Choir of Itaipu, followed by a welcome cocktail.
