OBITUARY: FIRST IPCC CHAIR BERT BOLIN DIES

Professor Bert Bolin, a leading climate change scientist who chaired the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) for its first ten years and whose research into climate change spanned five decades, passed away on 30 December 2007. He was 82. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, in a statement issued on 4 January 2008, said “Professor Bolin [made an] immeasurable contribution, not only in being one of the first to recognize the consequences of increasing emissions of greenhouse gases decades ago, but also in alerting the world to what was required by Governments to protect our planet from the impact.” IPCC statement, January 2008.
