On Monday May 26, the side event on Protected Areas and Biodiversity Conservation in the 21st Century: Mainstreaming biodiversity, sustainable development, and global environmental benefits convened in parallel with the 46th Global Environment Facility Council meeting and the 5th GEF Assembly. The session was organized by the Scientific and Technical Advisory Panel for the GEF to showcase two recent STAP studies, Mainstreaming Biodiversity in Practice & Assessing the Effects of Terrestrial Protected Areas on Human Well-Being in order to provide analysis of existing efforts to help better inform future initiatives. Moderators Sandra Díaz, STAP Member, and Thomas Lovejoy, UN Foundation and George Mason University, opened the session before introducing the panelists: Andrew Pullin, Bangor University; Brian Huntley, former Director, South African National Biodiversity Institute; Ernesto Enkerlin-Hoeflich, IUCN; and Mark Zimsky, the GEF. Jose Carlos Fernandez, National Institute for Ecology and Climate Change, Mexico, concluded the session with a commentary.
