On Monday May 26th, the side event on “Preventing the Extinction of Known Threatened Species by
Addressing Poaching and Illegal Trade,” convened in parallel with the 5th Global Environment
Facility Assembly, was organized by the World Wildlife Foundation (WWF) and the World Bank.
Exploring solutions to the increasingly rampant global problem of illegal wildlife trade,
panelists offered diverse views on how best to halt crime. Barney Long, WWF, moderated the event,
imploring speakers to highlight programs and solutions that have worked in the field. Panelists included:
Marco Silva, CITES Secretariat; Julian Lee, World Bank; Paola Agostini, World Bank; Chris Whaley;
UK Government; Mark Zimsky, GEF Secretariat; Caroline Petersen, UN Development Programme.
