69th Session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA 69)

The 69th Session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA 69) will convene at UN Headquarters on Tuesday, 16 September 2014. The General Debate will open on Wednesday, 24 September 2014. The debate's opening was postponed from Tuesday, 23 September 2014, to accommodate the Climate Summit (resolution A/RES/57/301 and decision 68/512).

Global Consultation on Communication for Development, Community Media and ICTs for Family Farming and Rural Development

To help propel family farmers' voices forward, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) and the World Association of Community Radio Broadcasters (AMARC) are hosting a series of three, simultaneous regional consultations, followed by one global consultation. The global consultation aims to enable e-Agriculture community members and others to discuss and complement the outcomes of the regional consultations. The regional and global consultations will also inform the Forum on Communication for Development and Community Media for Family Farming, which is taking place in October 2014.

16th Global Meeting of the Regional Seas Conventions and Action Plans

The UN Environment Programme's (UNEP) Regional Seas Programme uses a "shared seas" approach to maintain the biodiversity of oceans and marine ecosystems and to help restore ocean and marine ecosystem health, productivity and resilience. The meeting is expected to discuss: implementation of the Regional Seas Conventions and Action Plans, including their role in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the post-2015 development agenda; the Global Partnership on Marine Litter; regional actions on marine litter; the green economy in a blue world; and development of a roadmap on priorities for the next ten plus years. The meeting takes place during the 40th Anniversary of the Regional Seas Conventions and Actions Plans.

Regional Expert Group Meeting on Sustainable and Inclusive Transport Development

The UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP), together with the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation and CEPT University in Gujarat, India, is organizing this meeting for transport policy makers, municipal officials and representatives of international organisations in the region. The meeting is part of ESCAP's work in promoting sustainable and inclusive transport policies. The meeting will share global, regional and national experiences of: planning and developing urban transportation systems and Bus Rapid Transit Systems (BRTS); promoting safety, security and environmental values; managing Transit Oriented Development (TOD) and local accessibility; and improving institutional arrangements and financing for sustainable transport development. The meeting is organized in conjunction with the Second Asia BRTS Conference.

25th Annual SPREP Meeting

The 25th annual meeting of the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) will review progress over the past year, and discuss institutional reform, regional conventions, corporate services, regional cooperation, and the 2015 work programme and budget. The meeting of officials will be followed by a high-level ministerial meeting on 3 October to discuss climate change financing, ocean conservation and management, and countries' follow-up to the Third Conference on Small Island Developing States (SIDS).

IV EUROCLIMA Seminar

The fourth meeting of the EUROCLIMA Programme participants, which represents their first meeting since the Programme entered Phase II, will bring together EUROCLIMA national focal points, EU officials, and experts from associated organizations, namely the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), the UN Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), and the Interamerican Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA). The first day will be devoted to interaction with the Iberoamerican Network of Climate Change Offices (RIOCC), which is holding its 11th annual meeting in Lima, Peru, from 30 September-1 October. The second day will look at EUROCLIMA in the context of the EU's recently-approved Indicative Cooperation Programme for Latin America for 2014-2020, preparations for COP 20, plans for EUROCLIMA in the 2014-2016 period, and presentations on EUROCLIMA work at the national level. The third day will examine mainstreaming climate change into development policy, strategic mitigation and adaptation measures, and promoting capacity building and knowledge interchange.

Integrating Migration into Development: Diaspora as a Development Enabler

An international workshop on ‘Integrating Migration into Development: Diaspora as a Development Enabler' will focus on the interrelationships between migration and the three pillars of sustainable development (economic, social and environmental), and will include the contributions of migrants to development. The event is being co-organized by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the International Organization for Migration (IOM). The workshop will focus on the positive impacts of migrants and migration on development. It will feature some environmental panels that will discuss migration as an adaptation strategy.

Symposium on Integrating Sustainability into the Post-2015 Development Agenda

This half-day symposium features keynote speeches by Jeffrey Sachs, Director of the Earth Institute at Columbia University, and a panel discussion by sustainability experts from the UN University (UNU), Japan's Ministry of Environment, and the UN Environment Programme (UNEP). The panelists will discuss ways to integrate sustainability into the post-2015 development framework. Japanese-English interpretation will be provided. The event is organised by the UNU Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability (UNU-IAS) and the Millennium Promise Japan, supported by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

Second UN Conference on LLDCs - PrepCom 2

The 10-Year Review Conference on the Implementation of the Almaty Programme of Action is also known as the Second UN Conference on Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDCs). The Preparatory Committee (PrepCom) for the Conference, pursuant to UN General Assembly resolution 68/270, will hold its second meeting on 2-3 October 2014, at UN Headquarters in New York, US, preceded by informal consultations on the zero draft text of the outcome document. First Carbon-CAP Stakeholder Workshop

The first stakeholder workshop of the Carbon-CAP project will focus on the theme of 'The Role of Consumption-based Emissions in Climate Policy,' and will be funded by the EU's Seventh Programme for Research (FP7). Consortium members will present research results from the first year of the project. Experts from around the world will be invited to participate and contribute to maximizing the event output for the project's future work. Three sessions, held over two days, will include presentations on: carbon footprint models; options and business experience with consumption-based environmental policies; and interactive modeling of transformation scenarios. The Carbon-CAP project has two objectives: stimulating innovative European and international climate policies through improved knowledge based on consumption emissions; and realizing a more effective policy mix for moving to a competitive low-carbon economy in 2050.

Steering Committee Meeting of the Central America, Mexico and the Caribbean Soil Partnership

This meeting of the Steering Committee of the Regional Soil Partnership of Central America, Mexico and the Caribbean will finalize an Implementation Plan for the region. The meeting follows the endorsement of four Plans of Action at the Second Global Soil Partnership (GSP) Plenary Assembly, which took place from 22-24 July 2014.

Fourth Climate Change and Development Conference (CCDA-IV)

In recognition of 2014 as the year of agriculture, the fourth Climate Change and Development Conference (CCDA-IV) will take place under the theme 'Africa Can Feed Africa Now: Translating Climate Knowledge into Action'. This iteration of the conference is exploring how evolving knowledge of climate can create sustainable agricultural production systems in Africa, so that it can feed itself and support the socio-economic development of its people. The impact of climate change on vulnerable groups, such as farmers, women, youth and pastoralists, will be at the center of the discussions. Each year, CCDA brings together stakeholders from civil society, academia, the policy arena and intergovernmental organizations to discuss the interrelationships between climate change and development, with a focus on opportunities, best practices, different approaches, strategies and planning. The event is organized under the auspices of the Climate for Development in Africa (ClimDev-Africa) Programme, which is a consortium of the African Union Commission (AUC), the UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) and the African Development Bank (AfDB).

75th Session of the UNECE Committee on Housing and Land Management

The seventy-fifth session of the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) Committee on Housing and Land Management (CHLM) will review the current and past activities of the Committee and its Working Parties. The range of topics to be discussed includes the Country Profiles on housing and land management, sustainable housing and real estate markets, energy efficiency in the housing sector, sustainable urban development, and land management. Introductory Workshop on Industrial Chemicals under the Rotterdam Convention for the Caribbean

The Basel Convention Regional Centre for the Caribbean Region (BCRC-Caribbean) and the Secretariat for the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions (SBRSC) will host this regional workshop for key personnel in the management of industrial chemicals in Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Belize, Cuba, Dominica, the Dominican Republic, Guyana, Jamaica, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname, and Trinidad and Tobago. The workshop seeks to raise awareness of the need for meeting national obligations under the Rotterdam Convention, to facilitate the development of frameworks and implementation plans for industrial chemicals management, and to provide tools and approaches such as risk assessment methods and the use of the Globally Harmonized System for the Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS).

IPBES Side Event at CBD COP 12

The Secretariat of the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES), with the support of the UN Environment Programme - World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC) will hold a side event during the twelfth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP 12) to brief participants on the progress made to date in implementing the IPBES work programme, and on what can be expected in the coming months and years. Third Workshop of the LEDS-LAC Regional Platform

Chile's Environment Ministry and the UN Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) are co-hosting the Third Workshop of the Latin American Regional Platform on Low Emission Strategies (LEDS-LAC) of the Global Alliance on Development Strategies Low in Emissions (LEDS Global Partnership) under the theme 'From Planning to Implementation'. The Workshop will provide a forum for officials from Latin American governments and international organizations as well as technical experts and other stakeholders in the region to share experiences and best practices, participate in training, establish collaborative links and work, and discuss innovative ways to achieve low-carbon development that is also resilient to the impacts of climate change. It also will seek to construct a shared vision, find synergies with other regional initiatives and discuss the priorities, services and collaborative activities the Regional Platform should address in its 2015 work plan.

Climate Symposium 2014

Climate Symposium 2014 is sponsored by the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT), the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP), the European Commission, the European Space Agency (ESA), and the city of Darmstadt. The symposium will: be an important step towards further developing an efficient and sustained international space-based Earth observing system; bring together international experts in climate observations, research, analysis and modeling; and emphasize the role of space-based Earth observations in improving knowledge of the climate at global and regional scales, and in assessing models used for climate projections. The symposium is organized around the theme 'Enhanced Understanding of Climate Processes through Earth Observation'. Participants will discuss the proposed Architecture for Sustained Climate Monitoring from Space, and consider how Earth observation contributes to future developments in climate prediction and climate change projection. Key discussion themes will also include: clouds, circulation and climate sensitivity; the changing water cycle; the cryosphere in a warming world; ocean circulation and regional sea-level rise; prediction and attribution of extremes (from climate to weather); and regional climate variability and change (enabling climate services). The symposium is expected to: benefit climate-related risk management; facilitate the development of responsible and affordable climate change mitigation and adaptation options; and initiate a process for creating a joint action plan for planning and developing an international space-based climate observing system.

Italy and Africa: Working Together for a Sustainable Energy Future

This conference, organized by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs under the theme, 'Italy and Africa: Working Together for a Sustainable Energy Future,' will explore prospects for investment in power generation, and the development of renewable energy and transmission networks. The conference will encourage the engagement of the Italian and African private sectors in the deployment of renewable energy in Africa, and the strengthening of African energy markets. The 'Africa Report,' part of the International Energy Agency's 'World Energy Outlook,' will also be presented. The conference is part of the Italy-Africa Initiative, a programme launched by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in December 2013 to strengthen relations between Italy and Africa.

GSP Training on Digital Soil Mapping for Eastern and Southern Africa Representatives

Organized with the support of the European Commission, the Global Soil Partnership (GSP) has established a Capacity Development Programme on digital mapping in Africa, to be implemented in October 2014 and January 2015. This training workshop will be held from 13-17 October in Nairobi, Kenya. Previous workshops, one of which launched the African Soil Partnership in 2013, have identified capacity development as a regional priority and a key area for improving the availability of updated soil data and information.

Asia Urban Futures Workshop

The US Agency for International Development (USAID), together with UN-HABITAT, the UN Development Programme (UNDP) and UN Global Pulse are co-hosting this workshop under the theme 'Shaping solutions to the challenges of tomorrow for Asia's cities'. The event seeks to bring together diverse stakeholders to discuss some of the major challenges and opportunities facing Asian cities as the result of rapid urbanization and climate change. The workshop will look at scenarios, models and forecasts from experts on Asian cities, as well as examples of state-of-the-art science and technology-based approaches for building urban resilience.

Tenth Meeting of the Rotterdam Convention Chemical Review Committee (CRC10)

This subsidiary body of the Rotterdam Convention reviews chemicals and pesticide formulations according to the criteria set out by the Convention in Annexes II and IV respectively and make recommendations to the COP for listing these chemicals in Annex III. A pre-meeting is scheduled for 21 October, and the CRC 10 meeting will take place from 22-24 October. This meeting is taking place back-to-back with the tenth meeting of the Persistent Organic Pollutants Review Committee (POPRC10).

First Africa Regional Mountain Meeting (AMRF)

The Albertine Rift Conservation Society (ARCOS) and the Africa Mountain Partnership Champions Committee in partnership with the East African Community (EAC), the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), the Austrian Development Cooperation (ADC), and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) are organizing the 1st African Mountains Regional Forum (AMRF), under the theme 'Towards a Shared Mountain Agenda for Africa'. The three-day forum will aim to: support understanding of common conservation and development issues in the region; identify strategic actions to address major emerging issues; promote linkages and collaboration between different stakeholders for a regional framework on sustainable mountain development in Africa; and share lessons learned and experiences in meeting the conservation and development challenges including water, energy, food security and climate change in African Mountain regions.

Forum on Communication for Development and Community Media for Family Farming

As part of the International Year of Family Farming (IYFF), FAO will convene an international Forum on Communication for Development and Community Media for Family Farming (FCCM) to showcase the role of Communication for Development (ComDev) methods and tools as a driver for innovation and family farmers' participation in rural development strategies. The FCCM main objectives are to: showcase the contribution of ComDev, particularly community media, to family farming, providing evidence of innovative programmes and farmer-led experiences; raise awareness about the potential of communication in agriculture and rural development, giving voice to farmers and civil society organizations, rural institutions, private sector and community media; and identify opportunities, policy options and strategic initiatives to promote ComDev policies and services in support of family farming and rural development. The Forum's recommendations are expected to contribute to the Global Dialogue on Family Farming, to be held in Rome from 27-28 October 2014.

Global Dialogue on Family Farming

The Global Dialogue on Family Farming is part of a series of events focusing on family farming as part of the International Year of Family Farming (IYFF). First Ministerial and Policy Conference on Sustainable Transport

This conference is part of the Africa Sustainable Transport Forum, a high-level platform for discussion and policy decision making. The Forum aims to integrate sustainable transport into Africa's development and planning processes and increase funding to sustainable transport programmes in Africa, with the broader aim of improving access to transport, reducing air pollution and climate emissions, and improving road safety and health. The Forum also aims to share experiences from demonstration and pilot projects and foster South-South exchanges. The Forum intends to hold Ministerial conferences bi-annually, with Sub-Regional conferences in the interim years. The Forum is a partnership among the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), the UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT) and the World Bank. UNEP hosts the Forum Secretariat.

Consultation Workshop on Draft Technical Guidelines for Sound Management of Spent Lead-acid Batteries

The North American Commission for Environmental Cooperation (CEC) will hold a workshop of officials and invited experts from Canada, Mexico and the US to examine a draft of technical guidelines for the sound management of spent lead-acid batteries (SLABs) prepared by a consultant that seek to identify operating best practices and technologies that foster environmentally sound management of SLAB collection, storage and recycling. The workshop will be followed on 30 October 2014 by a closed meeting of the CEC's Experts Group on the Sound Management of Batteries, which will also consider the draft guidelines.

Gender, Water and Development Conference 2014

This conference will consider how to address gender, poverty and water challenges across Africa under the theme of 'Gender, Water and Development: The Untapped Connection'. The conference is hosted by the Water Research Commission of South Africa, in partnership with the Department of Water Affairs of South Africa, the African Ministers Council on Water (AMCOW), the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the Women for Water Partnership. AMCOW developed the Policy and Strategy for Mainstreaming Gender in the Water Sector in Africa, which identifies seven strategic objectives for member States and water authorities. These sub-themes are: formulating and implementing gender in water policy; mobilizing human and financial resources; implementing projects through economic empowerment and gendered approaches; conducting, sharing and implementing research and operational knowledge; mainstreaming gender in human and institutional capacity development; promoting cooperation and coordination to mainstream gender in the water sector; and supporting gender equality in the water sector through monitoring and evaluation (M&E).

CMS COP 11

Ecuador will host the eleventh meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 11) to the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) in November 2014, marking the first time that a CMS COP is held in Latin America. The decision was taken during the 41st Meeting of the Standing Committee, on 28 November 2013, in Bonn, Germany. The COP will be preceded by a High Level Ministerial meeting on 3 November. Second UN Conference on Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDCs)

The 10-year Review Conference on the Implementation of the Almaty Programme of Action, titled ‘Addressing the Special Needs of Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDCs) within a New Global Framework for Transit Transport Cooperation for Landlocked and Transit Developing Countries in 2014,' will aim to: undertake a comprehensive appraisal of the implementation of the Almaty Programme of Action; identify international, regional, subregional and national international trade and transit transport cooperation policies and review transit transport systems within the context of new and emerging challenges, partnerships and opportunities; reaffirm the global commitment to addressing the special development needs of and the challenges faced by LLDCs; and mobilize international support and action by and for LLDCs, including the formulation and adoption of a renewed development partnership framework for the next decade. The Preparatory Committee (PrepCom) for the Conference held its first meeting on 12-13 June 2014. World Conference on Education for Sustainable Development

The 2014 Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) World Conference is organized by the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the Government of Japan, advised by an International Steering Group of 12 ESD experts from around the world. Based on a recommendation of the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD), the UN General Assembly (UNGA) decided to dedicate a UN Decade to ESD (2005-2014) in December 2002. It designated UNESCO to coordinate global efforts to make education relevant for addressing present and future sustainable development challenges. The 2014 ESD World Conference will mark the end of the ESD Decade, as well as constitute an important milestone for pointing the way ahead. It will highlight the role of ESD for the transition to green economies and societies and as a catalyst for cross-sector planning and implementation of programmes in areas such as climate change, biodiversity and disaster risk reduction. The World Conference also will address how ESD can help move sustainable development policy and action forward to meet different global, regional, national, and local needs. The conference will be preceded by stakeholder meetings from 4-8 November.

Green Growth and Sustainable Development Forum 2014

The 2014 Green Growth and Sustainable Development (GGSD) Forum is organized by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) under the theme ‘Addressing the social implications of green growth'. The 2014 Forum will focus on distributional consequences of implementing green growth strategies and their impact on employment, income and skills. It will explore how governments can design policy frameworks to address distributional consequences, as an essential step in the transition to green growth, and the potential impacts of green growth policies on labor markets, households and income. The Forum will also consider: relevant indicators for measuring progress; energy sector reforms; skills for green growth; and social protection and redistribution policies for green growth. The Forum aims to enable OECD Committee delegates, experts, businesses and civil society to exchange experiences, identify knowledge gaps and identify policy tools and best practices.

The International Conference on Drylands, Deserts and Desertification (DDD) will focus on the theme, 'Healthy Lands - Healthy People'. The UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) Committee on Forests and the Forest Industry (COFFI) will consider the 'Rovaniemi Action Plan for the Forest Sector in a Green Economy,' which consists of five pillars: sustainable production and consumption of forest products, a low carbon forest sector, decent green jobs in the forest sector, long term provision of forest ecosystem services, and policy development and monitoring of the forest sector in relation to a green economy. Second International Conference on Nutrition

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO) are jointly organising this intergovernmental conference with the participation of Heads of State and Government and other UN agencies. The conference will identify public policy priorities at the national and global levels to address under-nutrition, micronutrient deficiencies and obesity. The conference aims to improve coordination among the food, health and agriculture sectors, and is expected to result in a political commitment for action and resource mobilization towards the goal of improved nutrition, contributing to the post-2015 development agenda and the Zero Hunger Challenge. The First International Conference on Nutrition took place in 1992, resulting in a World Declaration and Plan of Action for Nutrition.

International Mountain Day 2014

Organized under the theme 'Mountain Farming,' the 2014 International Mountain Day will focus on highlighting the rapid transformation of family farming in mountain regions driven by population growth and economic globalization, among other factors. The Day is meant to provide opportunities to: raise awareness on the importance of mountains to life; highlight opportunities and constraints in mountain development; and build partnerships for positive change in mountains and highlands, globally. The Third International Conference on Financing for Development (FfD) will take place in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on 13-16 July 2015. According to UN General Assembly Resolution 68/279, the first draft of the outcome document will be prepared by the co-facilitators on the basis of informal consultations, taking into account inputs from Member States, and presented by February 2015. 2015 Zaragoza Conference

The UN-Water International Zaragoza Conference in January 2015 will consider the theme "Water and Sustainable Development" and will focus on how to bring the post-2015 international agenda on water and sanitation into action. More than 300 participants from UN agencies and programmes, experts, representatives of the business community, governmental and non-governmental organizations will participate in the 15-17 January 2015 event in Zaragoza, Spain, to draw conclusions based on existing practice and the exchange of views between governments and stakeholders. This event will take place during the final year of the International Decade for Action 'Water for Life,' and participants will contribute to efforts to take stock of and learn from achievements as well as planning the next steps. This invitation-only event also will help UN-Water to prepare for World Water Day, which will focus on “water and sustainable development” in 2015.

Ninth Ad Hoc Open-ended Informal Working Group to Study Issues Relating to the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Marine BBNJ

This meeting of the Ad Hoc Open-ended Informal Working Group to study issues relating to the conservation and sustainable use of marine biological diversity beyond areas of national jurisdiction (BBNJ) is the third of three meetings (April 2014, June 2014 and January 2015) that the UN General Assembly (UNGA) requested be convened. The meetings aim to make recommendations to the UNGA on the scope, parameters and feasibility of an international instrument under the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). These three meetings are expected to result in a summary of discussions that will be submitted to the President of the UNGA, and are anticipated to contribute to a decision to be taken at the 69th Session of the UNGA on the development of a new international instrument under UNCLOS.

The Third International Conference on Financing for Development (FfD) will take place in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on 13-16 July 2015. According to UN General Assembly Resolution 68/279, the first draft of the outcome document will be prepared by the co-facilitators on the basis of informal consultations, taking into account inputs from Member States, and presented by February 2015. Informal consultations and drafting sessions on the outcome document will take place in January 2015 for three days, in April 2015 for five days, and in June 2015 for five days.

3rd Global Soil Week

The 3rd Global Soil Week will provide a platform for discussions on issues related to soils and land, and facilitate the emergence of new initiatives and strengthen existing ones. The Week will be composed of workshops on topics that have emerged since the 1st Global Soil Week: carbon land management; soils and water; land rehabilitation; cities; land governance; economics of land and land degradation; land degradation neutral world (LDNW); soil and biomass for non-food purposes; and soils and food security. In addition, the agenda will include dialogues organized by various stakeholders, and lunch break dialogues with presentations on activities, ideas, research and experiences relating to soils and land. The event is hosted by the Global Soil Forum at the Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies (IASS), in partnership with several UN agencies, intergovernmental and international organizations and German government agencies.

2015 Arctic Council Ministerial Meeting

This Arctic Council Ministerial Meeting will bring together ministers of the Arctic States and high-level representatives of the indigenous Permanent Participant organizations to set the Council's objectives for the next two years. The 2015 Ministerial Meeting will mark the conclusion of Canada's and the beginning of the United States' chairmanship, which will last from 2015-2017. The April 2015 meeting will be preceded by an event in Ottawa, Canada, on 23 April 2015 to showcase the Council's accomplishments during Canada's chairmanship.

2015 Global Land Forum

The 2015 Global Land Forum will take place under the theme 'Land governance for inclusive development, justice and sustainability: time for action'. The event will bring together practitioners, land users, activists, policy makers and researchers from around the world. Participants will debate, share and plan joint action on people-centered land governance, with the aim of contributing to broader goals of poverty reduction, food security, environmental sustainability and human well-being and dignity, including within the context of the post-2015 development framework. The first day of the Forum will be dedicated to ‘Africa Day,' with a spotlight on land governance in Senegal and the Africa region. The second and third days will discuss issues from a global perspective. The fourth day includes a field trip, which will be followed by an Assembly on the fifth day. The event will include plenary sessions, workshops and a Marketplace of Ideas. The International Land Coalition (ILC) is organizing the event together with the Pan African Institute for Consumer Citizenship and Development (CICODEV Africa) in partnership with Cadre de Recherche et d'Action sur le Foncier au Sénégal (CRAFS) and others.

Third High-level Political Forum

The Third High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF 3), which will take place under the auspices of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), will focus on the theme, 'Strengthening integration, implementation and review - the HLPF after 2015'. The HLPF is mandated to meet every year under the auspices of ECOSOC and every four years at the level of Heads of State and Government under the auspices of the UN General Assembly (UNGA). HLPF 3 will convene on 26 June-2 July and 6-8 July 2015.

Third International Conference on Financing for Development (FfD)

The Third International Conference on Financing for Development (FfD) will take place on 13-16 July 2015, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The conference will be held at the highest possible political level, including Heads of State or Government, relevant ministers – ministers for finance, foreign affairs and development cooperation – and other special representatives. The conference will result both in an intergovernmentally negotiated and agreed outcome and in summaries of the plenary meetings and other deliberations of the Conference, to be included in the report of the Conference.

Fourteenth World Forestry Congress

The 2015 World Forestry Congress, the first to be held in Africa, will come together under the theme, ‘Forests and People – Investing in a sustainable future'. The Congress, convened by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) and the government of South Africa, will consider how forests can be mainstreamed into global discussions on sustainable development and will facilitate the development of partnerships to address global forestry issues.

South Africa International Renewable Energy Conference 2015 (SAIREC)

The Government of South Africa together with the South African National Energy Development Institute (SANEDI) and the Renewable Energy Policy Network for the 21st Century (REN21) are hosting the South Africa International Renewable Energy Conference (SAIREC), to gather ministers, decision-makers, civil society, academia and the private sector to discuss experiences and strategies for accelerating the global deployment of renewable energy. The event is aimed particularly at giving the African renewable energy industry opportunities to showcase its work and gain insights from other participants. Second Meeting of the UN Environment Assembly

The UN Environment Assembly (UNEA) will convene for the second time in 2016. The UNEA of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) represents the highest level of governance of international environmental affairs in the UN system. The Rio+20 conference agreed in June 2012 to strengthen and upgrade UNEP through measures including universal membership of its Governing Council and ensuring the active participation of all relevant stakeholders. In March 2013, the 67th session of the UN General Assembly changed the designation of the Governing Council of UNEP to become UNEA, reflecting the intention to elevate its status.

Expo 2017: Future Energy

The international Expo 2017 will take place in Astana, Kazakhstan, and will aim to promote the most appropriate and viable sustainability-driven action plans to address the possibilities of future energy. The Expo, organized under the theme 'Future Energy' and the sub-theme 'Solutions for Tackling Humankind's Greatest Challenge,' will address future energy from several perspectives, including: exploration of stategies, programmes and technologies for sustainable energy development; promotion of energy security and efficiency; and the encouragement of renewable energy use. Venues for the World's Fairs and their themes are determined by taking into account political, economic, geographical and cultural contexts. The history of World's Fairs extends back to “the Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of all Nations,” which took place in London in 1851.
