IPCC 40

The 40th session of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC 40) will be held to adopt the Fifth Assessment Review (AR5) Synthesis Report and approve its Summary for Policy Makers. Subsequently, in December 2014, a copy of the Synthesis Report will be presented to the 20th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 20) to the UNFCCC.

Tenth Session of Committee of Experts on International Cooperation in Tax Matters

The tenth session of the Committee of Experts on International Cooperation in Tax Matters will address issues related to the next update of the UN Model Double Taxation Convention between Developed and Developing Countries, including various issues related to the application of treaty rules to hybrid entities (Article 4), the concept of “permanent establishment,” the meaning of “connected projects” and physical presence issues (Article 5), the meaning of “auxiliary activities” under Article 8 (Transportation), the Commentary to Article 9 (Associated Enterprises), Article 12 on Royalties, Exchange of Information (Article 26), and methods for elimination: conflicts of qualification, and conflicts of interpretation (Article 23). The Committee will also discuss cross-cutting issues under the UN Model, such as taxation of services. Other issues on the agenda of the session include work towards the next update of the UN Practical Manual on Transfer Pricing for Developing Countries, the draft Manual for the Negotiation of Bilateral Tax Treaties between Developed and Developing Countries, taxation of extractive industries, Base Erosion and Profit-Shifting (BEPS) and its consequences for developing countries, cooperative compliance and corporate governance in tax matters, as well as capacity development.

Fifth African Rift Geothermal Conference (ARGeo - C5)

The 5th African Rift Geothermal Conference (ARGeo - C5) is being organized to promote the development, exploration, use and financing of geothermal energy projects. ARGeo - C5, themed 'Geothermal: Solution to Africa Energy Needs,' will serve as an information-sharing platform and will facilitate regional cooperation. The main conference, which will take place 29-31 October, will feature a range of sessions geared toward exploring: risk mitigation; how to attract private developers; fast-tracking projects; stimulating the growth of the industry through investment; and the development, construction and operation of geothermal plants. Participants also have the option of participating in short courses, such as 'Improving Success in Drilling' and 'Financing Geothermal Projects' on 27-28 October. After the conference, an optional field trip on 1-2 November is offered. The African Rift Geothermal Development Facility (ARGeo) Project is organizing the conference in partnership with the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Government of Tanzania. The UNEP-ARGeo Programme is a project funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) that encourages the development of geothermal energy sources in East Africa to realize their untapped potential and reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. It was officially launched in 2010 at ARGeo - C3.

REDD+ Academy – Asia

The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the UN Collaborative Programme on Reducing Emissions from Deforestation (UN-REDD) are convening the first in a series of REDD+ Academies aimed at training REDD+ decision-makers in issues such as national REDD+ strategies, safeguards and stakeholder engagement. This session will bring together members of the Indonesian Parliament, environmental journalists, and REDD+ future leaders and practitioners from the sixteen UN-REDD partner countries across the region. The Academy will be supported by a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) to be launched in 2015.

Workshop for Energy Regulators: Energy Pricing, Reform and Transition

This expert group meeting on fuel price reform and renewable energy energy transitions, taking place from 29-31 October 2014, is organized by the UN Office of Sustainable Development (UNOSD), in partnership with the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) and the Global Subsidies Initiative (GSI) of the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD). The workshop will specifically focus on fuel pricing reform as a measure necessary for the transition to renewable energy, and complements a UNOSD workshop series on 'Fossil Fuels to Renewable Energy Transitions'. The workshop also builds on work by the organizing partners to build a network of fuel price regulators, and will benefit policymakers from approximately 20 African and Asian countries. Themes covered are: technical issues associated to energy policy; energy transition and political economy of reforms; and reform lessons and work plan building.

ESCAP Seminar on Sustainable Development Financing

The Macroeconomic Policy and Development Division of the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) is organizing this event on “Financing for Sustainable Development: Local and Global Perspectives”. José Antonio Ocampo, Professor at the School of International and Public Affairs, Columbia University, will review current debates on multilateral financing, considering the roles of institutions such as the Islamic Development Bank and the new BRICS bank. 42nd Meeting of the CMS Standing Committee

The 42nd Meeting of the Standing Committee of the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) will convene prior to the 11th Meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 11) to CMS. The Standing Committee was established by Resolution 1.1 of the COP. It is responsible for carrying out interim activities on behalf of the COP to: ensure that decisions are implemented; monitor the budget; make recommendations for consideration by the next COP; provide advice and guidance to the Secretariat; represent the COP in negotiations with the Host Government and UNEP with regard to the Secretariat; act as a bureau at the COP; and undertake any other ad hoc task assigned to it by the COP.

Eighth Meeting of the IRENA Council

The 8th Meeting of the Council of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) will take place from 3-4 November, in Abu Dhabi, the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Sessions organized as part of the meeting will include: the Director-General's report on implementation of the Agency's 2014-2015 work program and budget; and discussions on the outcomes on the 2014 UN Climate Summit, and renewable energy and energy transformation, including in relation to IRENA's 'REthinking Energy' flagship publication. Participants at the Council Meeting will include representatives from the 21 Council member States and delegations from other IRENA member States. Prior to the Council meeting, the meetings of IRENA's Programme and Strategy Committee (PSC) and Administration and Finance Committee (AFC) will be held, on 2 November. The IRENA Council facilitates consultations and cooperation among the Agency's members and considers the draft work program and budget, and the annual report. Two committees, the PSC and AFC, assist the Council in its work.

Gender, Water and Development Conference 2014

This conference will consider how to address gender, poverty and water challenges across Africa under the theme of 'Gender, Water and Development: The Untapped Connection'. The conference is hosted by the Water Research Commission of South Africa, in partnership with the Department of Water Affairs of South Africa, the African Ministers Council on Water (AMCOW), the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the Women for Water Partnership. AMCOW developed the Policy and Strategy for Mainstreaming Gender in the Water Sector in Africa, which identifies seven strategic objectives for member States and water authorities. These sub-themes are: formulating and implementing gender in water policy; mobilizing human and financial resources; implementing projects through economic empowerment and gendered approaches; conducting, sharing and implementing research and operational knowledge; mainstreaming gender in human and institutional capacity development; promoting cooperation and coordination to mainstream gender in the water sector; and supporting gender equality in the water sector through monitoring and evaluation (M&E).

CMS COP 11

Ecuador will host the eleventh meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 11) to the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) in November 2014, marking the first time that a CMS COP is held in Latin America. The decision was taken during the 41st Meeting of the Standing Committee, on 28 November 2013, in Bonn, Germany. The COP will be preceded by a High Level Ministerial meeting on 3 November. Another Standing Committee meeting will be held 9 November upon closure of the COP.

Sixth Session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee on Mercury (INC 6)

As mandated in the resolution on arrangements in the interim period adopted by the Conference of Plenipotentiaries on the Minamata Convention on Mercury, the intergovernmental negotiating committee (INC) on mercury established pursuant to Governing Council decision 25/5 will meet during the period between the date on which the Convention is opened for signature and the date of the opening of the first meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention as may be necessary to facilitate the rapid entry into force of the Convention and its effective implementation upon its entry into force.

Second UN Conference on Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDCs)

The 10-year Review Conference on the Implementation of the Almaty Programme of Action, titled ‘Addressing the Special Needs of Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDCs) within a New Global Framework for Transit Transport Cooperation for Landlocked and Transit Developing Countries in 2014,' will aim to: undertake a comprehensive appraisal of the implementation of the Almaty Programme of Action; identify international, regional, subregional and national international trade and transit transport cooperation policies and review transit transport systems within the context of new and emerging challenges, partnerships and opportunities; reaffirm the global commitment to addressing the special development needs of and the challenges faced by LLDCs; and mobilize international support and action by and for LLDCs, including the formulation and adoption of a renewed development partnership framework for the next decade. The Preparatory Committee (PrepCom) for the Conference held its first meeting on 12-13 June 2014. The second meeting will take place on 2-3 October 2014, at UN Headquarters in New York, US, preceded by informal consultations on the zero draft text of the outcome document.

CMS COP 11 High-level Ministerial Panel

This Ministerial Panel will be held at the venue of the eleventh meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS COP 11). Ministers and other dignitaries will debate how to reconcile the concepts of “Rights of Nature” and the “Green Economy” in the context of the depletion of natural resources, including wildlife.

ForestSAT 2014: A Bridge between Forest Sciences, Remote Sensing and Geo-Spatial Applications

Organized by several Italian institutions in coordination with the International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), the European Commission, European Space Agency (ESA), and European Environment Agency (EEA) and the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the ForestSAT 2014 conference will promote the integration of Earth observation with other geo?spatial applications and traditional forest sciences. The conference covers all possible scientifically-based developments and applications of remote-sensing and geographic information system (GIS) tools for monitoring, mapping or modeling forest systems, and aims to facilitate a better understanding of their function and to support their inventory and sustainable management.

Second UNIDO Forum on Inclusive and Sustainable Industrial Development (ISID)

This event builds on discussions held at a UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) global forum on 23-24 June 2014, among governments, development agencies and industry actors from developed and developing countries, on strategies for inclusive and sustainable industrial development. The Second Forum on ISID is expected to showcase UNIDO's ISID Programme for Country Partnerships, through two pilot countries, and define the collaboration modalities of innovative business models to forge partnerships to scale up ISID investment and impact in assisted member countries. Participants will also agree a way forward for the sustainable development of UNIDO Partnerships for ISID investment in 2015 and beyond.

Fifth International Forum on Energy for Sustainable Development

The Fifth International Forum on Energy for Sustainable Development will emphasize accomplishing the three Sustainable Energy for All (SE4All) objectives through a regional agenda and sharing of experiences, namely universal access to modern energy services, doubling energy efficiency and doubling the share of renewable energy by 2030 globally. The Forum is organized by the Government of Tunisia and the UN Economic Commissions for Europe, Western Asia, Asia and the Pacific, Latin America and the Caribbean, and Africa. A high-level dialogue on 'International Cooperation towards Sustainable Energy for All' is expected to adopt a declaration reaffirming the roles of key stakeholders and calling for joining efforts to achieve the SE4All objectives. The forum will also include a workshop on energy efficiency investments and the launch of a new UN Development Account project on promoting renewable energy investments.

7th International Conference on Ballast Water Management (ICBWM2014)

The Seventh International Conference on Ballast Water Management will address the International Convention for the Control and Management of Ships' Ballast Water and Sediments (2004). The Convention has been ratified by 40 countries and is expected to come into force within the next two years. The Convention aims to decrease the rate of bio-invasions that result from shipping. The conference offers an opportunity for sharing experiences and solutions on the implementation of the Convention. It will also include a field trip to Singapore's Ballast Water Centre Facility and other sites. The Global Environment Facility (GEF), UN Development Programme (UNDP), GloBallast Partnerships Programme and the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) are organizing the meeting.

Sustainable Energy in Central Asia: Business Opportunities and Technology Transfer

This one-day event, organized by the European Commission, takes place in the context of growing awareness among Central Asia Governments of the potential of renewable energy and energy efficiency. The event seeks to promote sustainable energy developments and related business opportunities in the region. Three sessions will feature panelists representing Central Asian ministries responsible for energy, the European Commission, European development banks and agencies, and international energy specialist organizations, such as the International Energy Agency (IEA) and the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), among others, and will focus on: promoting sustainable energy in Central Asia; financing sustainable energy in Central Asia; and deploying sustainable energy projects. The event will be held in English and Russian, with simultaneous interpretation.

Presentation of IEAG Report on Data Revolution

The UN Secretary-General's Independent Expert Advisory Group (IEAG) on a Data Revolution for Sustainable Development will share its final report on 6 November, following its presentation to the Secretary-General. A draft of the report was issued on 24 October for a public comment period that closed on 27 October.

Workshop on Self-Consumption of Renewables: The Role of Storage in Revolutionising Grid Infrastructure

This workshop, organized by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), will examine ways for battery storage technologies to transform grid infrastructure and support on-site renewable electricity generation by consumers. The event will also seek to identify best practices, regulatory challenges and lessons to be highlighted in a forthcoming IRENA technology roadmap for electricity storage. The workshop will have a maximum number of 30 participants, comprising policymakers, industry representatives and academics, among others, who will also receive complimentary access to the 'Energy Storage Summit' held on 6 November, in Tokyo, Japan. The event is part of a series of workshops, the first one of which, titled 'International Energy Storage Policy and Regulation,' was organized on 27 March in Düsseldorf, Germany. The third workshop in the series, on 'Supporting Small- and Large-scale Deployment of Renewables through Electricity Storage,' will take place on 3 December in New Delhi, India.

International Conference on Mountain People Adapting to Change

The International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) is organizing an international conference on 'Mountain People Adapting to Change: Solutions Beyond Boundaries Bridging Science, Policy, and Practice'. Noting that the rapid environmental change in the Hindu Kush Himalayas has outpaced adaptation techniques, the organizers aim to fill gaps in knowledge about local trends and global climate change and develop solutions that "look beyond political, sectoral and national boundaries". Over 200 experts and stakeholders are anticipated to convene at the conference, which is expected to produce valuable insights for mountainous regions beyond the Hindu Kush Himalayas. The primary objectives of the conference are "share evidence-based scientific knowledge; boost awareness and engagement; and foster partnerships for action".

2015 International Year of Soils Launch in Latin America and the Caribbean

The 68th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) declared 2015 as the International Year of Soils (IYS). A regional launch of the IYS in Latin America and the Caribbean will take place during the XX Latin American Congress of Soil Science, which will be held from 9-15 November 2014, in Cusco, Peru. The IYS will be formally launched on 5 December 2014, during the 69th session of the UN General Assembly in New York, US.

World Conference on Education for Sustainable Development

The 2014 Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) World Conference is organized by the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the Government of Japan, advised by an International Steering Group of 12 ESD experts from around the world. Based on a recommendation of the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD), the UN General Assembly (UNGA) decided to dedicate a UN Decade to ESD (2005-2014) in December 2002. It designated UNESCO to coordinate global efforts to make education relevant for addressing present and future sustainable development challenges. The 2014 ESD World Conference will mark the end of the ESD Decade, as well as constitute an important milestone for pointing the way ahead. It will highlight the role of ESD for the transition to green economies and societies and as a catalyst for cross-sector planning and implementation of programmes in areas such as climate change, biodiversity and disaster risk reduction. The World Conference also will address how ESD can help move sustainable development policy and action forward to meet different global, regional, national, and local needs. The conference will be preceded by stakeholder meetings from 4-8 November.

India Clean Cookstoves Forum 2014

The India Clean Cookstoves Forum (ICCF) 2014, which aims to tackle barriers to the large-scale adoption of improved cookstoves (ICS) in India, will feature a practitioner workshop, conference and business model workshop. The practitioner workshop will take place on the first day and feature in-depth technical discussions on marketing, distribution networks, financing, gender and product design. Emphasis will be placed on increasing demand for and supply of ICS. The conference, to be held the second day, will focus on market transformation and ways to make ICS available in all Indian households. Representatives from Indian industry, business, banks, the government and the cookstove sector will offer their ideas for the best path to widespread adoption, through everything from marketing to government policies. On the third day, the business model workshop will serve to encourage, analyze and improve the business models of new entrepreneurs in this sector, to make them more attractive to investors. Expected participants at the Forum are practitioners, project developers, investors, banks, researchers, social enterprises, government, donor agencies, foundations and NGOs. Conference on Land Policy in Africa

The inaugural Conference on Land Policy in Africa, co-hosted by the Land Policy Initiative (LPI) and the Forum on Agricultural Research in Africa (FARA), will convene under the theme 'The next Decade of Land Policy in Africa: Ensuring Agricultural Development and Inclusive Growth,' in support of the 2014 African Union (AU) Year of Agriculture and Food Security. IEA World Energy Outlook 2014 Launch

The International Energy Agency's (IEA) 'World Energy Outlook 2014' (WEO 2014) report will be launched on 12 November. The 2014 edition will comprise an analysis of medium- and longer-term energy trends, including latest data and developments of relevance for energy security, the economy and the environment. The report will cover: oil, natural gas and renewables; energy efficiency; energy-related carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions; fossil-fuel and renewable energy subsidies; and universal access to modern energy services. WEO 2014 will also provide in-depth analyses on energy sector investment, Africa and nuclear power. The WEO Special Reports 'World Energy Investment Outlook' and 'Africa Energy Outlook' were released on 3 June and 13 October 2014, respectively.

Green Growth and Sustainable Development Forum 2014

The 2014 Green Growth and Sustainable Development (GGSD) Forum is organized by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) under the theme ‘Addressing the social implications of green growth'. Symposium on Science and the Sustainable Development Goals

This symposium will focus on opportunities and challenges related to including inputs from scientists in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and fostering interaction between policy processes and science. This event will focus on: assessing the ongoing processes on the SDGs and the post-2015 development agenda; the role of scientists in shaping the SDGs at the global, national, and local levels to help integrate sustainability concerns into actions; and engagement between local and international science communities with policymakers, civil society and citizens to help craft the post-2015 development agenda and implementation sustainable policies. UNECE Sustainable Energy Week

The UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) is organizing Sustainable Energy Week under the theme 'Energy for Sustainable Development: Trends and Milestones'. The three primary events of the week are the meetings of: the Group of Experts on Energy Efficiency (GEEE) on 17-18 November 2014; the Group of Experts on Renewable Energy (GERE) on 18-19 November; and the 23rd session of the Committee on Sustainable Energy (CSE), from 19-21 November. Second Preparatory Committee meeting for Third UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction

A second session of the Preparatory Committee for the Third International Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) is expected to develop the draft post-2015 DRR framework. In addition to negotiations on this document, technical workshops will convene to address: indicators, monitoring and review process for the post-2015 framework; and integration of disaster risks in financial regulation. Analysis and Management of Changing Risks for Natural Hazards

This conference is the culmination of two European Commission (EC) projects: Changing Hydro-meteorological Risks as Analyzed by a New Generation of European Scientists (CHANGES); and Increasing Resilience through Earth Observation (IncREO). It aims to facilitate the exchange of ideas related to effective risk management strategies. Second International Conference on Nutrition

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO) are jointly organising this intergovernmental conference with the participation of Heads of State and Government and other UN agencies. The conference will identify public policy priorities at the national and global levels to address under-nutrition, micronutrient deficiencies and obesity. The conference aims to improve coordination among the food, health and agriculture sectors, and is expected to result in a political commitment for action and resource mobilization towards the goal of improved nutrition, contributing to the post-2015 development agenda and the Zero Hunger Challenge. The First International Conference on Nutrition took place in 1992, resulting in a World Declaration and Plan of Action for Nutrition.

The UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) is organizing a conference, titled ‘From Exclusion to Empowerment: The Role of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) for Persons with Disabilities'. The conference aims to promote the human rights and freedoms of persons with disabilities and to encourage concrete measures for empowering disabled persons through the use of ICTs. The conference will also: provide assistance to UNESCO Member States in implementing their commitments on the inclusion and empowerment of persons with disabilities and ICTs; share good practices and encourage dialogue among those working in the disability field; promote the application of affordable and accessible ICTs for people with disabilities; and propose an action plan and recommendations to improve the status quo of people with disabilities on the role of ICTs in increasing access to education, job opportunities, public information and social services. The event will include plenary and breakout parallel sessions as well as a film festival and exhibition.

INTERPOL Environmental Compliance and Enforcement Committee Meetings

INTERPOL will host the Environmental Compliance and Enforcement Committee, together with the Wildlife Crime, Fisheries Crime and Pollution Crime Working Groups. These meetings will bring together inter-governmental organizations, law enforcement and government officials nominated by the National Central Bureaus from across INTERPOL's 190 member countries. The Green Customs Initiative, comprised of the Secretariats of the major multilateral environmental agreements and inter-governmental organizations, will also take this opportunity to hold their annual meeting, marking the partnership's 10th anniversary. The meetings will be dedicated to developing practical law enforcement responses and to coordinating projects focused on such areas as capacity building and intelligence gathering across the environmental crime spectrum.

The Third Hemispheric Encounter of the Inter-American Network for Disaster Mitigation (INDM) will consider the theme 'Integrating Disaster Risk Management and Adaptation to Climate Change in the Development Agenda'. A meeting of the Inter-American Committee on Natural Disaster Reduction (IACNRD) will take place in parallel on 25 November, followed on 26 November by a Meeting of the Subregional Specialized Inter-governmental Organizations (IGO) on Disaster Risk Management that also serve as the Regional Focal Points for INDM, namely the Central American Integration System's (SICA) Center for the Prevention of Natural Disasters in Central America (CEPREDENAC), CARICOM's Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA), and the Andean Community's Committee for the Prevention and Attention to Disasters (CAPRADE). First International Environment Forum for Basin Organizations

OECD Global Forum on Environment: New Perspectives on the Water-Energy-Food Nexus

This Forum will provide a platform for senior policy experts, private sector leaders and government officials from Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and partner countries to explore how countries can align policy goals to address water, energy and food reforms in a coherent way. Global Soil Biodiversity Conference

The first Global Soil Biodiversity Conference will be organized by the Global Soil Biodiversity Initiative (GSBI) and EcoFINDERS, from 2-5 December in Dijon, France. Held under the theme 'Assessing Soil Biodiversity and Its Role for Ecosystem Services,' this first GSBI conference will summarize the current state of knowledge and recent achievements in the science of soil biodiversity. Workshop on Supporting Small- and Large-Scale Deployment of Renewables through Electricity Storage

Organized by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), this workshop will focus on the role of electricity storage in strengthening renewables-based mini-grids for rural electrification, and integrating utility-scale solar photovoltaic (PV) and wind power parks into the grid. The workshop will also explore best practices and lessons to be highlighted in IRENA's forthcoming technology roadmap for electricity storage publication. The workshop will convene a maximum of 30 participants, who will also be granted complimentary access to the '2nd International Conference and Exhibition on Energy Storage and Microgrids in India,' taking place from 4-5 December in New Delhi, India. The event is the third in a series of workshops on electricity storage, with previous workshops, focusing on policy and regulation, and self-consumption, taking place on 27 March in Düsseldorf, Germany, and 7 November in Tokyo, Japan, respectively.

2015 International Year of Soils Launch

The 68th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) declared 2015 as the International Year of Soils (IYS). The IYS will be formally launched in an event organized during the 69th session of the UNGA, on 5 December 2014, in New York, US. Concurrent launch events will be held at the headquarters of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) in Rome, Italy, as well as in Bangkok, Thailand, and elsewhere in the world. The launch date coincides with the World Soil Day (WSD). The IYS 2015 will promote awareness and understanding of the importance of soil for food security and essential ecosystem functions.

Global Landscapes Forum

The second Global Landscapes Forum (GLF) will be convened at the margins of the 20th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UNFCCC by the CIGAR Consortium's Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR), the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Government of Peru. The Forum will focus on integrating the landscape approach into the post-2015 climate and development agendas. Themes will include food, water and energy; climate change; the green economy; and sustainable development. The programme will include a wide variety of sessions covering topics such as REDD+, climate-smart agriculture, fiscal and trade policy instruments, land restoration and forest economics. The event will also feature a debate on the future of food security in a changing climate.

Transport Day 2014

The Partnership on Sustainable Low Carbon Transport (SLoCaT) and the Bridging the Gap Initiative (BtG) are organizing Transport Day 2014 during the 20th session of the UNFCCC Conference of the Parties (COP 20). International Conference on South-South Cooperation on Climate Change

The International Ecosystem Management Partnership (IEMP) is organizing a conference in recognition of the growing role of South-South cooperation as a complement to North-South partnership on climate change. The International Conference on South-South Cooperation aims to raise awareness about this growing role, identify opportunities and challenges, agree on enabling conditions for promoting South-South cooperation, and create consensus for solidifying South-South cooperation's part in the expected 2015 agreement on climate change. Regional Aquaculture Conference 2014

The Regional Aquaculture Conference 2014 will take place on the theme, ‘Blue Growth in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea: developing sustainable aquaculture for food security'. The conference aims to promote socioeconomic growth and food security in the Mediterranean and Black Sea from a blue growth perspective. International Mountain Day 2014

Organized under the theme 'Mountain Farming,' the 2014 International Mountain Day will focus on highlighting the rapid transformation of family farming in mountain regions driven by population growth and economic globalization, among other factors. The Day is meant to provide opportunities to: raise awareness on the importance of mountains to life; highlight opportunities and constraints in mountain development; and build partnerships for positive change in mountains and highlands, globally. 2015 Zaragoza Conference

The UN-Water International Zaragoza Conference in January 2015 will consider the theme "Water and Sustainable Development" and will focus on how to bring the post-2015 international agenda on water and sanitation into action. More than 300 participants from UN agencies and programmes, experts, representatives of the business community, governmental and non-governmental organizations will participate in the 15-17 January 2015 event in Zaragoza, Spain, to draw conclusions based on existing practice and the exchange of views between governments and stakeholders. This event will take place during the final year of the International Decade for Action 'Water for Life,' and participants will contribute to efforts to take stock of and learn from achievements as well as planning the next steps. The 15th Regular Session of the Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (CGRFA 15) is expected to convene in 2015. Ninth Ad Hoc Open-ended Informal Working Group to Study Issues Relating to the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Marine BBNJ

This meeting of the Ad Hoc Open-ended Informal Working Group to study issues relating to the conservation and sustainable use of marine biological diversity beyond areas of national jurisdiction (BBNJ) is the third of three meetings (April 2014, June 2014 and January 2015) that the UN General Assembly (UNGA) requested be convened. The meetings aim to make recommendations to the UNGA on the scope, parameters and feasibility of an international instrument under the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). These three meetings are expected to result in a summary of discussions that will be submitted to the President of the UNGA, and are anticipated to contribute to a decision to be taken at the 69th Session of the UNGA on the development of a new international instrument under UNCLOS.

According to UN General Assembly Resolution 68/279, the first draft of the outcome document will be prepared by the co-facilitators on the basis of informal consultations, taking into account inputs from Member States, and presented by February 2015. The Preparatory Process as outlined in the road map issued by the co-facilitators in October 2014 will include three drafting sessions on the outcome document. Second UNESCO Forum on Global Citizenship Education

The UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization's (UNESCO) Second Forum on Global Citizenship Education will take place under the theme, ‘Planning for Post-2015: Building Peaceful and sustainable societies,' with the aim of providing inputs into the post-2015 development agenda's framework for education. The Forum will focus on future international policy directions, country implementation and partnerships on global citizen education (GCE). High-Level Thematic Debate on Means of Implementation for Post-2015 Development Agenda

The President of the 69th UN General Assembly (UNGA), Sam Kutesa, will convene this thematic debate, which will focus on how to mobilize resources to turn aspirations for the post-2015 development agenda into realities. It is expected to discuss financing, technology development and transfer and capacity building. The debate will also consider investments in climate financing, rural development, infrastructure, protection of the global commons and social sectors. The Economics of Climate Change Mitigation Options in the Forestry Sector

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) is convening an online conference to discuss the costs and benefits of various options for climate change mitigation in the forestry sector including REDD+, green building, and the promotion of bioenergy. The conference will be organized under two themes: ‘climate change mitigation through forest management interventions', and ‘climate change mitigation through improved wood utilization'. Sustainable Ocean Initiative Capacity-Building Workshop for South America

The Sustainable Ocean Initiative (SOI) Capacity-Building Workshop will focus on sharing and learning from regional experiences on integrated marine and coastal area management, with the aim of holistically achieving the Aichi Biodiversity Targets 6 and 11. Participants will also discuss scientific and technical tools to support the Aichi Biodiversity Targets, including the description of ecologically or biologically significant marine areas (EBSAs). The SOI is a global platform to enhance capacity and build partnerships to achieve the Aichi Biodiversity Targets related to marine and coastal biodiversity. Dresden Nexus Conference 2015

The Dresden Nexus Conference (DNC) 2015 will convene under the theme 'Global Change, Sustainable Development Goals and the Nexus Approach,' and include participants from UN organizations, UN University (UNU) institutes, governments, international organizations, as well as individual researchers and representatives of non-governmental organizations (NGOs). Focusing on the contributions of a nexus approach to the management of water, soil and waste, the DNC 2015 will address the following issues: maintaining and enhancing environmental resources under global change; facilitating efficient and sustainable use of limited natural resources; engaging international development partners in the promotion of the nexus approach; and facilitating a transition to a green economy, especially with regard to agriculture. 3rd Global Soil Week

The 3rd Global Soil Week will provide a platform for discussions on issues related to soils and land, and facilitate the emergence of new initiatives and strengthen existing ones. The Week will be composed of workshops on topics that have emerged since the 1st Global Soil Week: carbon land management; soils and water; land rehabilitation; cities; land governance; economics of land and land degradation; land degradation neutral world (LDNW); soil and biomass for non-food purposes; and soils and food security. In addition, the agenda will include dialogues organized by various stakeholders, and lunch break dialogues with presentations on activities, ideas, research and experiences relating to soils and land. The event is hosted by the Global Soil Forum at the Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies (IASS), in partnership with several UN agencies, intergovernmental and international organizations and German government agencies.

2015 Global Land Forum

The 2015 Global Land Forum will take place under the theme 'Land governance for inclusive development, justice and sustainability: time for action'. The event will bring together practitioners, land users, activists, policy makers and researchers from around the world. Participants will debate, share and plan joint action on people-centered land governance, with the aim of contributing to broader goals of poverty reduction, food security, environmental sustainability and human well-being and dignity, including within the context of the post-2015 development framework. The first day of the Forum will be dedicated to ‘Africa Day,' with a spotlight on land governance in Senegal and the Africa region. The second and third days will discuss issues from a global perspective. The fourth day includes a field trip, which will be followed by an Assembly on the fifth day. The event will include plenary sessions, workshops and a Marketplace of Ideas. The Third International Conference on Financing for Development (FfD) will take place on 13-16 July 2015, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The conference will be held at the highest possible political level, including Heads of State or Government, relevant ministers – ministers for finance, foreign affairs and development cooperation – and other special representatives. Second Meeting of the UN Environment Assembly

The UN Environment Assembly (UNEA) will convene for the second time in 2016. The UNEA of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) represents the highest level of governance of international environmental affairs in the UN system. The Rio+20 conference agreed in June 2012 to strengthen and upgrade UNEP through measures including universal membership of its Governing Council and ensuring the active participation of all relevant stakeholders. In March 2013, the 67th session of the UN General Assembly changed the designation of the Governing Council of UNEP to become UNEA, reflecting the intention to elevate its status.

Expo 2017: Future Energy

The international Expo 2017 will take place in Astana, Kazakhstan, and will aim to promote the most appropriate and viable sustainability-driven action plans to address the possibilities of future energy. The Expo, organized under the theme 'Future Energy' and the sub-theme 'Solutions for Tackling Humankind's Greatest Challenge,' will address future energy from several perspectives, including: exploration of stategies, programmes and technologies for sustainable energy development; promotion of energy security and efficiency; and the encouragement of renewable energy use. Venues for the World's Fairs and their themes are determined by taking into account political, economic, geographical and cultural contexts. The history of World's Fairs extends back to “the Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of all Nations,” which took place in London in 1851.

XXVII International Primatological Society Congress

The Great Apes Survival Partnership (GRASP) will gather over 800 of the world's leading primate experts, scientists and researchers at the XXVII International Primatological Society (IPS) Congress. GRASP's bid to host the meeting was built upon the theme, 'Global Connectivity to Ensure the Future of Primates,' and proposes to include Nairobi-based UN experts in areas such as climate change, deforestation, sustainable development, and civil conflict, among others, in IPS symposia, workshops and panels. The event will convene during 2018. The XXVI IPS Congress is scheduled to convene from 21-27 August 2016, in Chicago, Illinois, US.
