Sixth Virtual Meeting of the Working Group on Access Rights and the Regional Instrument of Principle 10 in LAC

The Working Group on Rights of Access and Regional Instrument will hold its sixth virtual meeting. The working group was established by the Plan of Action to 2014 for the implementation of the Declaration of Principle 10, adopted in April 2013 in Guadalajara, Mexico, in order to advance towards the formulation of a regional instrument. The working group's objective is to deepen knowledge on access rights with a view to making a proposal on the nature and contents of the regional instrument.

Fifth Session of Intergovernmental Committee of Experts on Sustainable Development Financing

The fifth session of the Intergovernmental Committee of Experts on Sustainable Development Financing (ICESDF) is scheduled for 4-8 August 2014. The provisional agenda is contained in document A/AC.282/2013/1. Only Members of the Committee of Experts, accompanied by up to two advisors, are invited to attend this closed session. Experts nominated by regional groups to serve as replacements for members may also attend as observers.

US-Africa Leaders Summit

The first US-Africa Leaders Summit will aim to further strengthen ties with Africa, build on progress made since US President Obama's trip to Africa in 2013, and advance a focus on investment and trade in Africa. US President Barack Obama will invite an expected 47 leaders from African countries.

International Workshop on Open Data for Science and Sustainability in Developing Countries

This workshop is being organized by the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the International Council for Science's (ICSU) Committee on Data for Science and Technology, the World Federation of Engineering Organizations' Communication and Information Committee, and Kenya's Ministry of Communication and Information. It will discuss strategies and objectives of sponsoring and participating organizations concerning open data for science and sustainability in developing countries, with special consideration for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and ICSU's Future Earth research program in developing countries. The workshop will also develop and endorse a set of principles and guidelines for preservation of, and open access to, research data in developing countries.

World Weather Open Science Conference 2014

The World Weather Open Science Conference (WWOSC2014): The Weather: What's the Outlook, which is convening for the first time ever, will bring together the weather science and user communities under the overarching theme ‘Seamless Prediction of the Earth System: from minutes to months'. WWOSC2014 will examine the “frontiers of knowledge,” and outline new scientific goals and challenges. The Conference will feature special sessions on high-impact weather events, such as heatwaves, droughts, cold snaps and floods. The Conference's two streams – the Science Program and the User, Application and Social Science Program – will meet in joint plenary and special sessions. The Science Program will cover basic weather research, as well research needed to establish prediction systems and assess the impacts of weather and climate events. The User Program will consider challenges and opportunities associated with communicating and employing weather information, science and services that reap social and economic benefits. The Conference is being co-organized by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), the International Council for Science, Environment Canada, and the National Research Council, Canada.

WHO Conference on Health and Climate

This three-day conference, hosted by the World Health Organization (WHO) at its headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, will bring together leading experts in the fields of health and climate change, to discuss: strengthening health system resilience to climate risks; and promoting health while mitigating climate change. Within each of these themes the conference will make recommendations on policy options to maximize health benefits, and the specific contribution of the health sector to the objectives.

65th Annual UN DPI/NGO Conference

The 65th UN DPI/NGO Conference is titled '2015 and Beyond: Our Action Agenda,' is being organized by the UN Department of Public Information and the NGO/DPI Executive Committee, and will focus on the theme of 'The role of civil society in the post 2015 development agenda'. The event seeks to provide an opportunity for civil society networks and activists to mobilize messaging, advocacy strategies, partnerships and accountability frameworks in the lead up to the start of the intergovernmental negotiations on the post-2015 development agenda. The outcome of the conference will be a declaration that will be shared with the UN system, the UN Member States, the global civil society and other stakeholders.

The Division of Sustainable Development (DSD) of the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) is organizing this Forum in collaboration with an 18-member steering committee representing the nine Major Groups, and the Caribbean, Pacific and AIMS (Africa, Indian Ocean, Mediterranean and South China Sea) regions. SIDS Major Groups and Other Stakeholders Forum

This pre-conference Forum will take place ahead of the Third International Conference on Small Island Developing States (SIDS). The Forum will promote opportunities for Major Groups and other stakeholders from SIDS to develop partnerships with each other and with potential supporters, with the overall aim of promoting the sustainable development of SIDS. The Forum aims to integrate gender equality and human rights advocacy into discussions around SIDS, the Beijing+20 Review and the post-2015 development agenda. Civil society partnerships are envisaged in six priority areas: climate change and disaster risk management; oceans, seas and biodiversity; water and sanitation, food security and waste management; sustainable economic development; sustainable energy; and social development, including health and non-communicable diseases (NCDs), youth and women. The Forum is also expected to assist in mobilizing resources for a proposed Civil Society Sustainability Fund. A welcome event will take place on the evening of 28 August.

SIDS Private Sector Forum

The Government of Samoa, the Samoa Chamber of Commerce, and the UN Office of the High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States (UN-OHRLLS) are convening this event prior to the Third International Conference on SIDS. The Forum aims to facilitate interaction and networking between senior business and government leaders to enhance private sector partnerships for SIDS, in six thematic areas of: agriculture; tourism; renewable energy; fisheries and marine resources; disaster risk reduction (DRR); and connectivity, information and communication technologies (ICTs) and transport. The second day of the Forum is a high-level session that is anticipated to produce an outcome document identifying the private sector's priority actions. The Forum will announce a SIDS Global Business Leaders Network. UN-OHRILLS, with the UN Office for South-South Cooperation (UOSSC) will host a ‘matchmaking space' at the Forum to facilitate business relationships in areas such as agriculture, clean energy and water management.

SIDS Renewable Energy Forum

The Government of New Zealand and the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) are organising this event ahead of the Third International Conference on Small Island Developing States (SIDS). The Forum will highlight the benefits of renewable energy for SIDS, provide an opportunity for mutual learning about relevant policies and practices, and promote partnerships for the deployment of renewable energy in SIDS. The Forum is anticipated to highlight the importance of measurable targets in energy partnerships, and to announce the formation of new partnerships.

Third International Conference for Small Island Developing States

The Third International Conference for Small Island Developing States (SIDS) is scheduled to convene from 1-4 September 2014, in Samoa. This conference will include a high-level segment to build upon the Barbados Programme of Action (BPOA) and the Mauritius Strategy for Implementation (MSI), and will identify new challenges for the sustainable development of SIDS. According to UN General Assembly resolution A/67/L.66, "The General Assembly, recalling its resolution 67/207 of 21 December 2012, in which it welcomed the offer of the Government of the Independent State of Samoa to host the third International Conference on Small Island Developing States in 2014, decides that the third International Conference on Small Island Developing States shall be held from 1 to 4 September 2014 in Apia, to be preceded by activities related to the Conference from 28 to 30 August 2014, also in Apia". In addition, a Partnerships Forum will take place on 30-31 August.

Milankovitch Anniversary UNESCO Symposium on Water Management in Transition Countries

Latin American and Caribbean Carbon Forum (LACCF)

The Latin American and Caribbean Carbon Forum (LACCF) will take place from 3-5 September 2014, in Bogotá, Colombia. The Forum will: inform attendees of developments in carbon markets; provide a venue for connecting carbon project developers and investors; showcase lessons from completed Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) projects in Latin America and the Caribbean; feature presentations on public and private sector strategies for promoting CDM benefits in the region; offer the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions (NAMAs), Low Carbon Development Strategies (LEDS), market mechanisms, and green investment in the region; and encourage networking and discussions among technical experts, project developers and carbon buyers. 3rd UNITAR-Yale Conference on Environmental Governance and Democracy

The Third UN Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR)-Yale Conference on Environmental Governance and Democracy will meet under the theme of 'Human Rights, Environmental Sustainability, Post-2015 Development, and the Future Climate Regime'. It will bring together more than 150 scholars and policy experts to discuss state-of-the-art knowledge regarding themes that are at the nexus of human rights and the environment, including: whether constitutional environmental rights are a driver for environmental policy-making; human rights and environmental justice cases from countries and the field; why and how procedural environmental rights matter; human rights, environment and corporate responsibility; and effective participation of civil society and vulnerable groups. The outcomes and conclusions are expected to contribute to: discussions on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and a post-2015 development agenda; negotiations of a future climate change regime; the 2014 World Conference on Indigenous Peoples; and the 2015 report of the UN Independent Expert on Human Rights and the Environment (UNIEHRE). 2nd Meeting of the Task Force on the Water-Food-Energy-Ecosystem Nexus

The 2nd Meeting of the Task Force on the Water-Food-Energy-Ecosystem Nexus under the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) Convention on the Protection and Use of Transboundary Watercourses and International Lakes (Water Convention) will bring together representatives to discuss the assessment of the nexus in selected transboundary basins, as provided for in the Convention's programme of work 2013-2015, and will: provide an overview of the status of preparations so far; review the approach to assessing the nexus; discuss the finding and the experience from the basin assessments so far; review the preparations for the forthcoming basin assessments; discuss the format and elements of the basin assessments; agree on next steps; and propose possible follow-up activities for the Convention's programme of work 2016-2018.

Environment Seminar: Fuelling Aviation with Green Technology

The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) will host this environment seminar under the theme 'Fuelling Aviation with Green Technology,' to review and disseminate information on the latest and most innovative emissions-reducing aviation technologies. Participants will learn about next generation aircraft, research programmes, airplane recycling, green operations, eco-airports, clean energy for aviation and financing. Joint FAO/WHO Meeting on Pesticide Residues (JMPR)

The Joint Meeting on Pesticide Residues (JMPR) is an expert ad hoc body administered jointly by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO), which harmonizes the requirement and the risk assessment on the pesticide residues. The Committee invites submissions of information on substances that will be evaluated at future meetings as described in its requests for data. The list of substances to be evaluated is based on recommendations of the Codex Committee on Pesticide Residues (CCPR), previous Expert Meetings, and direct requests from governments, other interested organizations, and producers of substances that have been evaluated previously.

International Symposium on Agroecology for Food Security and Nutrition

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) is organizing this symposium to highlight existing practices in agroecology and exchange information on the latest research and science in the field. The symposium is expected to result in an action plan for a follow-up process for Africa and Asia; contributions to an international framework for research on agroecology, including relevant economic, social, environmental and climatic aspects; and informational material such as video interviews and agroecological practices for online sharing. The two-day preliminary agenda will include inter alia: a keynote on the landscape of agroecology; plenaries covering ecosystem services, social processes and virtuous cycles in agroecology; and a high-level segment. 2014 World Conference on Indigenous Peoples

The UN General Assembly approved a resolution (A/RES/66/296) to organize a high-level plenary meeting in 2014 to be known as the World Conference on Indigenous Peoples to share perspectives and best practices on the realization of indigenous peoples' rights, including to pursue the objectives of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. An 8-hour Special Session to Follow Up on the Programme of Action from the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) is being organized to coincide with the high-level segment of the general debate at the UN General Assembly. UN Private Sector Forum

The 2014 edition of the UN Private Sector Forum will be held on the sidelines of the UN Secretary-General's Climate Summit, and will focus on carbon pricing, specifically actions that the public and private sectors can take to achieve an equitable and fair valuation of carbon through long-term strategies, investments and policies. Thus, the Forum aims to: enable business and investors to identify the contribution they can make towards pricing the cost of carbon emissions; and inspire public policy measures, commitments to action and public-private partnerships to achieve a carbon price. The Forum, convened by the UN Global Compact in cooperation with the World Bank Group, and with the support of UN partners, will be comprised of: a High-Level Luncheon, co-chaired by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and World Bank Group President Jim Yong Kim; and a Business and Civil Society Special Session, featuring leadership actions that businesses can take in cooperation with governments to address climate change. Fourth Climate Change and Development Conference (CCDA-IV)

In recognition of 2014 as the year of agriculture, the fourth Climate Change and Development Conference (CCDA-IV) will take place under the theme 'Africa Can Feed Africa Now: Translating Climate Knowledge into Action'. This iteration of the conference is exploring how evolving knowledge of climate can create sustainable agricultural production systems in Africa, so that it can feed itself and support the socio-economic development of its people. The impact of climate change on vulnerable groups, such as farmers, women, youth and pastoralists, will be at the center of the discussions. Climate Symposium 2014

Climate Symposium 2014 is sponsored by the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT), the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP), the European Commission, the European Space Agency (ESA), and the city of Darmstadt. The symposium will: be an important step towards further developing an efficient and sustained international space-based Earth observing system; bring together international experts in climate observations, research, analysis and modeling; and emphasize the role of space-based Earth observations in improving knowledge of the climate at global and regional scales, and in assessing models used for climate projections. The symposium is organized around the theme 'Enhanced Understanding of Climate Processes through Earth Observation'. Participants will discuss the proposed Architecture for Sustained Climate Monitoring from Space, and consider how Earth observation contributes to future developments in climate prediction and climate change projection. Key discussion themes will also include: clouds, circulation and climate sensitivity; the changing water cycle; the cryosphere in a warming world; ocean circulation and regional sea-level rise; prediction and attribution of extremes (from climate to weather); and regional climate variability and change (enabling climate services). The symposium is expected to: benefit climate-related risk management; facilitate the development of responsible and affordable climate change mitigation and adaptation options; and initiate a process for creating a joint action plan for planning and developing an international space-based climate observing system.

Tenth Meeting of the Rotterdam Convention Chemical Review Committee (CRC10)

This subsidiary body of the Rotterdam Convention reviews chemicals and pesticide formulations according to the criteria set out by the Convention in Annexes II and IV respectively and make recommendations to the COP for listing these chemicals in Annex III. A pre-meeting is scheduled for 21 October, and the CRC 10 meeting will take place from 22-24 October. ICAO Environmental ​Seminars in the APAC Region

As part of a series of two environmental seminars held back-to-back in each region of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the International Aviation and Environment Seminar will be held from 28-29 October 2014, and the States' Action Plans Seminar will be held from 29-30 October 2014, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, for the Asia and Pacific (APAC) Region. CMS COP 11

Ecuador will host the eleventh meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 11) to the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) in November 2014, marking the first time that a CMS COP is held in Latin America. The decision was taken during the 41st Meeting of the Standing Committee, on 28 November 2013, in Bonn, Germany. The COP will be preceded by a High Level Ministerial meeting on 3 November. Another Standing Committee meeting will be held 9 November upon closure of the COP.

Second UN Conference on LLDCs

The 10-year Review Conference on the Implementation of the Almaty Programme of Action, titled ‘Addressing the Special Needs of Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDCs) within a New Global Framework for Transit Transport Cooperation for Landlocked and Transit Developing Countries in 2014,' has four key aims. It aims to: undertake a comprehensive appraisal of the implementation of the Almaty Programme of Action; identify international, regional, subregional and national international trade and transit transport cooperation policies and review transit transport systems within the context of new and emerging challenges, partnerships and opportunities; reaffirm the global commitment to addressing the special development needs of and the challenges faced by LLDCs; and mobilize international support and action by and for LLDCs, including the formulation and adoption of a renewed development partnership framework for the next decade. ForestSAT 2014: A Bridge between Forest Sciences, Remote Sensing and Geo-Spatial Applications

Organized by several Italian institutions in coordination with the International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), the European Commission, European Space Agency (ESA), and European Environment Agency (EEA) and the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the ForestSAT 2014 conference will promote the integration of Earth observation with other geo‐spatial applications and traditional forest sciences. Fifth International Forum on Energy for Sustainable Development

World Conference on Education for Sustainable Development

The 2014 Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) World Conference is organized by the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the Government of Japan, advised by an International Steering Group of 12 ESD experts from around the world. Based on a recommendation of the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD), the UN General Assembly (UNGA) decided to dedicate a UN Decade to ESD (2005-2014) in December 2002. It designated UNESCO to coordinate global efforts to make education relevant for addressing present and future sustainable development challenges. The 2014 ESD World Conference will mark the end of the ESD Decade, as well as constitute an important milestone for pointing the way ahead. It will highlight the role of ESD for the transition to green economies and societies and as a catalyst for cross-sector planning and implementation of programmes in areas such as climate change, biodiversity and disaster risk reduction. The World Conference also will address how ESD can help move sustainable development policy and action forward to meet different global, regional, national, and local needs. The conference will be preceded by stakeholder meetings from 4-8 November.

5th International Conference on Drylands, Deserts and Desertification

The International Conference on Drylands, Deserts and Desertification (DDD) will focus on the theme, 'Healthy Lands - Healthy People'. It will consider the interactions between drylands and the people around them. The conference will include plenary lectures and panels, parallel sessions, workshops and field trips on theoretical and practical issues related to addressing desertification and sustainable livelihoods in dryland areas. Sessions will also be held on, inter alia: the target of zero net rate of land degradation; soil and land restoration; urban planning in drylands; and water policy in drylands.

Second International Ocean Research Conference (IORC)

The Second International Ocean Research Conference (IORC) will bring together the global scientific community to plan for the coming decade of international collaboration in marine science and technology. IORC will also focus on improving ocean governance. The event includes 16 thematic sessions that will focus on: building scientific knowledge; applying knowledge for societal benefit: achieving ecosystem management and sustainability; and improving governance and building capacity. 72nd Session of the Committee on Forests and the Forest Industry (COFFI)

The UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) Committee on Forests and the Forest Industry (COFFI) will consider the 'Rovaniemi Action Plan for the Forest Sector in a Green Economy,' which consists of five pillars: sustainable production and consumption of forest products, a low carbon forest sector, decent green jobs in the forest sector, long term provision of forest ecosystem services, and policy development and monitoring of the forest sector in relation to a green economy. The workshop will also address forest resources assessment and reporting issues and develop guidance on implementation of the UNECE/ Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) Integrated Programme of Work.

Second International Conference on Nutrition

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO) are jointly organising this intergovernmental conference with the participation of Heads of State and Government and other UN agencies. The conference will identify public policy priorities at the national and global levels to address under-nutrition, micronutrient deficiencies and obesity. The conference aims to improve coordination among the food, health and agriculture sectors, and is expected to result in a political commitment for action and resource mobilization towards the goal of improved nutrition, contributing to the post-2015 development agenda and the Zero Hunger Challenge. The First International Conference on Nutrition took place in 1992, resulting in a World Declaration and Plan of Action for Nutrition.

First International Environment Forum for Basin Organizations

2015 Zaragoza Conference

The UN-Water International Zaragoza Conference in January 2015 will consider the theme "Water and Sustainable Development" and will focus on how to bring the post-2015 international agenda on water and sanitation into action. More than 300 participants from UN agencies and programmes, experts, representatives of the business community, governmental and non-governmental organizations will participate in the 15-17 January 2015 event in Zaragoza, Spain, to draw conclusions based on existing practice and the exchange of views between governments and stakeholders. This event will take place during the final year of the International Decade for Action 'Water for Life,' and participants will contribute to efforts to take stock of and learn from achievements as well as planning the next steps. This invitation-only event also will help UN-Water to prepare for World Water Day, which will focus on “water and sustainable development” in 2015.

Ninth Ad Hoc Open-ended Informal Working Group to Study Issues Relating to the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Marine BBNJ

This meeting of the Ad Hoc Open-ended Informal Working Group to study issues relating to the conservation and sustainable use of marine biological diversity beyond areas of national jurisdiction (BBNJ) is the third of three meetings (April 2014, June 2014 and January 2015) that the UN General Assembly (UNGA) requested be convened. The meetings aim to make recommendations to the UNGA on the scope, parameters and feasibility of an international instrument under the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). These three meetings are expected to result in a summary of discussions that will be submitted to the President of the UNGA, and are anticipated to contribute to a decision to be taken at the 69th Session of the UNGA on the development of a new international instrument under UNCLOS.

South Africa International Renewable Energy Conference 2015 (SAIREC)

The Government of South Africa together with the South African National Energy Development Institute (SANEDI) and the Renewable Energy Policy Network for the 21st Century (REN21) are hosting the South Africa International Renewable Energy Conference (SAIREC), to gather ministers, decision-makers, civil society, academia and the private sector to discuss experiences and strategies for accelerating the global deployment of renewable energy. Second Meeting of the UN Environment Assembly

The UN Environment Assembly (UNEA) will convene for the second time in 2016. The UNEA of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) represents the highest level of governance of international environmental affairs in the UN system. The Rio+20 conference agreed in June 2012 to strengthen and upgrade UNEP through measures including universal membership of its Governing Council and ensuring the active participation of all relevant stakeholders. In March 2013, the 67th session of the UN General Assembly changed the designation of the Governing Council of UNEP to become UNEA, reflecting the intention to elevate its status.
