Forum on Communication for Development and Community Media for Family Farming

As part of the International Year of Family Farming (IYFF), FAO will convene an international Forum on Communication for Development and Community Media for Family Farming (FCCM) to showcase the role of Communication for Development (ComDev) methods and tools as a driver for innovation and family farmers' participation in rural development strategies. The FCCM main objectives are to: showcase the contribution of ComDev, particularly community media, to family farming, providing evidence of innovative programmes and farmer-led experiences; raise awareness about the potential of communication in agriculture and rural development, giving voice to farmers and civil society organizations, rural institutions, private sector and community media; and identify opportunities, policy options and strategic initiatives to promote ComDev policies and services in support of family farming and rural development. The Forum's recommendations are expected to contribute to the Global Dialogue on Family Farming, to be held in Rome from 27-28 October 2014.

47th Meeting of the GEF Council

The Global Environmental Facility (GEF) Council meets twice per year to approve new projects with global environmental benefits in the GEF's focal areas, and to provide guidance to the GEF Secretariat and Agencies. A CSO Consultation will take place on 27 October 2014.

Africa Conference on Land Grabs 2014

The first Africa Conference on Land Grabs will explore the theme 'Governance, Beneficiation and Sustainability: Beyond Rhetoric' through interactive, peer-reviewed parallel sessions. The conference will provide a platform for government officials, writers, academics, businesses, funders and other stakeholders to exchange views in five tracks: Understanding Land Grabs: What implications for Africa?; Community Involvement, Accountability and Beneficiation; Water Access, Food Security and the Future of Commons; Private Sector, Foreign Ownership and Sustainable Development; and Strengthening Land Governance (local, national and continental) and Cadastral Capacity. Scholarships are available for participants, with priority for individuals who will bring knowledge and skills gained at the conference to work in their communities.

Global Dialogue on Family Farming

The Global Dialogue on Family Farming is part of a series of events focusing on family farming as part of the International Year of Family Farming (IYFF). It will bring together high-level government representatives, family farmers, CSOs, development agencies, academia and the private sector to take stock of the momentum created during the IYFF and discuss next steps for a pro-family farming agenda for action after the official conclusion of the IYFF. The event will consider recommendations from a series of regional consultations on family farming held throughout the Year. It will also consider outcomes from the Forum on Communication for Development and Community Media for Family Farming, which will take place immediately before the Global Dialogue.

REDD+ Academy – Asia

The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the UN Collaborative Programme on Reducing Emissions from Deforestation (UN-REDD) are convening the first in a series of REDD+ Academies aimed at training REDD+ decision-makers in issues such as national REDD+ strategies, safeguards and stakeholder engagement. This session will bring together members of the Indonesian Parliament, environmental journalists, and REDD+ future leaders and practitioners from the sixteen UN-REDD partner countries across the region. The Academy will be supported by a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) to be launched in 2015.

Workshop on International Arrangement on Forests (IAF) beyond 2015

This workshop is being convened as a contribution to the work of the UN Forum on Forests (UNFF) in order to consider options for a future International Arrangement on Forests (IAF). The country-led initiative workshop will build on the work of the first Open-ended Intergovernmental Ad Hoc Expert Group on the International Arrangement on Forests (AHEG1), which considered views from Parties on the matter as well as the report of the Independent Assessment. The results of the workshop will be submitted to the second AHEG as well as to the eleventh session of the UNFF.

CMS COP 11

Ecuador will host the eleventh meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 11) to the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) in November 2014, marking the first time that a CMS COP is held in Latin America. The decision was taken during the 41st Meeting of the Standing Committee, on 28 November 2013, in Bonn, Germany. The COP will be preceded by a High Level Ministerial meeting on 3 November. Another Standing Committee meeting will be held 9 November upon closure of the COP.

Second UN Conference on Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDCs)

The 10-year Review Conference on the Implementation of the Almaty Programme of Action, titled ‘Addressing the Special Needs of Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDCs) within a New Global Framework for Transit Transport Cooperation for Landlocked and Transit Developing Countries in 2014,' will aim to: undertake a comprehensive appraisal of the implementation of the Almaty Programme of Action; identify international, regional, subregional and national international trade and transit transport cooperation policies and review transit transport systems within the context of new and emerging challenges, partnerships and opportunities; reaffirm the global commitment to addressing the special development needs of and the challenges faced by LLDCs; and mobilize international support and action by and for LLDCs, including the formulation and adoption of a renewed development partnership framework for the next decade. The Preparatory Committee (PrepCom) for the Conference held its first meeting on 12-13 June 2014. The second meeting will take place on 2-3 October 2014, at UN Headquarters in New York, US, preceded by informal consultations on the zero draft text of the outcome document.

FOREST EUROPE Round Table on updating the Sustainable Forest Management Tools

During this round table, proposals to consolidate pan-European policies and tools in Sustainable Forest Management (SFM) will be explored. Discussions will be based, among others, on the results of the FOREST EUROPE Expert Group to Propose Improvements in Tools for Sustainable Forest Management, whose work is now focused on a proposal of an updated set of pan-European indicators.

ForestSAT 2014: A Bridge between Forest Sciences, Remote Sensing and Geo-Spatial Applications

Organized by several Italian institutions in coordination with the International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), the European Commission, European Space Agency (ESA), and European Environment Agency (EEA) and the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the ForestSAT 2014 conference will promote the integration of Earth observation with other geo?spatial applications and traditional forest sciences. The conference covers all possible scientifically-based developments and applications of remote-sensing and geographic information system (GIS) tools for monitoring, mapping or modeling forest systems, and aims to facilitate a better understanding of their function and to support their inventory and sustainable management.

2015 International Year of Soils Launch in Latin America and the Caribbean

The 68th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) declared 2015 as the International Year of Soils (IYS). A regional launch of the IYS in Latin America and the Caribbean will take place during the XX Latin American Congress of Soil Science, which will be held from 9-15 November 2014, in Cusco, Peru. The IYS will be formally launched on 5 December 2014, during the 69th session of the UN General Assembly in New York, US.

Conference on Land Policy in Africa

The inaugural Conference on Land Policy in Africa, co-hosted by the Land Policy Initiative (LPI) and the Forum on Agricultural Research in Africa (FARA), will convene under the theme 'The next Decade of Land Policy in Africa: Ensuring Agricultural Development and Inclusive Growth,' in support of the 2014 African Union (AU) Year of Agriculture and Food Security. The conference, which will be held biennially, aims to create a continental land policy platform for presenting research and drawing stakeholder attention to the issues and status of land policy in Africa. The conference will include plenary and parallel sessions, side events, panel discussions and exhibitions, and will focus on six sub-themes: inclusive agricultural growth; land governance frameworks; women's land rights; land rights under different tenure regimes; experiences and best practices in land policies; and land administration.

5th International Conference on Drylands, Deserts and Desertification

The International Conference on Drylands, Deserts and Desertification (DDD) will focus on the theme, 'Healthy Lands - Healthy People'. It will consider the interactions between drylands and the people around them. The conference will include plenary lectures and panels, parallel sessions, workshops and field trips on theoretical and practical issues related to addressing desertification and sustainable livelihoods in dryland areas. 72nd Session of the Committee on Forests and the Forest Industry (COFFI)

The UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) Committee on Forests and the Forest Industry (COFFI) will consider the 'Rovaniemi Action Plan for the Forest Sector in a Green Economy,' which consists of five pillars: sustainable production and consumption of forest products, a low carbon forest sector, decent green jobs in the forest sector, long term provision of forest ecosystem services, and policy development and monitoring of the forest sector in relation to a green economy. The workshop will also address forest resources assessment and reporting issues and develop guidance on implementation of the UNECE/ Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) Integrated Programme of Work.

Joint CBD, UNCCD Workshop on NBSAPs - NAP Synergies

The Secretariats of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) are jointly organizing a workshop on synergies for the design, development and implementation of CBD National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) and UNCCD National Action Programmes (NAPs). Participants will be selected to attend through a nomination process and will include those directly responsible for the development, updating and/or implementation of the CBD NBSAPs and the UNCCD NAPs. Nominations should be submitted no later than 10 October 2014. This meeting will convene immediately after the North Africa Regional Workshop of the UN-Water Initiative, titled ‘Capacity Development to Support National Drought Management Policies,' which is taking place from 17-20 November 2014.

Global Soil Biodiversity Conference

The first Global Soil Biodiversity Conference will be organized by the Global Soil Biodiversity Initiative (GSBI) and EcoFINDERS, from 2-5 December in Dijon, France. Held under the theme 'Assessing Soil Biodiversity and Its Role for Ecosystem Services,' this first GSBI conference will summarize the current state of knowledge and recent achievements in the science of soil biodiversity. The goals of the conference will be to promote scientific research on the role of soil biodiversity for ecosystem functions and services, and integrate such understanding into environmental agendas, sustainable policies and land management decisions globally. Topics to be addressed include: discovery and observation; tracking and monitoring; assessing pressures and threats; strategies for management and conversation; soil ecology education; and global harmonization of methods for structural and functional diversity of soil organisms.

2015 International Year of Soils Launch

The 68th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) declared 2015 as the International Year of Soils (IYS). The IYS will be formally launched in an event organized during the 69th session of the UNGA, on 5 December 2014, in New York, US. Concurrent launch events will be held at the headquarters of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) in Rome, Italy, as well as in Bangkok, Thailand, and elsewhere in the world. The launch date coincides with the World Soil Day (WSD). The IYS 2015 will promote awareness and understanding of the importance of soil for food security and essential ecosystem functions.

Global Landscapes Forum

The second Global Landscapes Forum (GLF) will be convened at the margins of the 20th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UNFCCC by the CIGAR Consortium's Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR), the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Government of Peru. The Forum will focus on integrating the landscape approach into the post-2015 climate and development agendas. Themes will include food, water and energy; climate change; the green economy; and sustainable development. The programme will include a wide variety of sessions covering topics such as REDD+, climate-smart agriculture, fiscal and trade policy instruments, land restoration and forest economics. The event will also feature a debate on the future of food security in a changing climate.

International Mountain Day 2014

Organized under the theme 'Mountain Farming,' the 2014 International Mountain Day will focus on highlighting the rapid transformation of family farming in mountain regions driven by population growth and economic globalization, among other factors. The Day is meant to provide opportunities to: raise awareness on the importance of mountains to life; highlight opportunities and constraints in mountain development; and build partnerships for positive change in mountains and highlands, globally. Coordinated by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), the Day will also constitute one of the concluding events of the 2014 International Year of Family Farming and link to relevant FAO publications and programmes.

Third Session of the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) Plenary

The third session of the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) plenary will review progress made on the adopted IPBES work programme for 2014 – 2018, including the related budget and institutional arrangements for its implementation. In addition, the third session of the IPBES plenary will select the members of the Multidisciplinary Expert Panel (MEP) based on the nominations received from governments. Second meeting of the Open-ended Intergovernmental Ad Hoc Expert Group on the International Arrangement on Forests (AHEG2)

The Ad Hoc Expert Group to the UN Forum on Forests (UNFF) will hold its second meeting (AHEG2) in order to review the International Arrangement on Forests (IAF). Expected outputs from AHEG2 include recommendations on an IAF beyond 2015 based on inputs from stakeholders and an independent review of the IAF multi-year programme of work. In order to facilitate its work, AHEG2 will consider input on the future of IAF provided by member States and other stakeholders, as long as such inputs are received before 5 December 2014.

The Economics of Climate Change Mitigation Options in the Forestry Sector

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) is convening an online conference to discuss the costs and benefits of various options for climate change mitigation in the forestry sector including REDD+, green building, and the promotion of bioenergy. The conference will be organized under two themes: ‘climate change mitigation through forest management interventions', and ‘climate change mitigation through improved wood utilization'. UNCCD 3rd Scientific Conference

The UNCCD 3rd Scientific Conference will take place from 9-12 March 2015, in Mexico, and will address the theme "Combating desertification, land degradation and drought for poverty reduction and sustainable development – the contribution of science, technology, traditional knowledge and practices”. It will be held during the fourth special session of the Committee on Science and Technology (CST S-4) of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD). The Scientific Conference aims harness a wide range of scientific, local and traditional knowledge to achieve poverty reduction and sustainable development in areas susceptible to desertification, land degradation and drought. The Conference is being organized by the UNCCD Secretariat and the Scientific and Traditional Knowledge for Sustainable Development (STK4SD) Consortium.

IV Mediterranean Forest Week

The IV Mediterranean Forest Week is being convened by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), the Government of Spain, FOREST EUROPE and other partners in order to explore the role of Mediterranean forests in the green economy. The Week will bring together stakeholders to explore policy considerations from the Tlemcen Declaration and Strategic Framework on Mediterranean Forests (SFMF), promote resilient forests, consider the integration of other sectors within national forest programmes and develop an overall vision for the future of Mediterranean forests and woodlands.

Dresden Nexus Conference 2015

The Dresden Nexus Conference (DNC) 2015 will convene under the theme 'Global Change, Sustainable Development Goals and the Nexus Approach,' and include participants from UN organizations, UN University (UNU) institutes, governments, international organizations, as well as individual researchers and representatives of non-governmental organizations (NGOs). Focusing on the contributions of a nexus approach to the management of water, soil and waste, the DNC 2015 will address the following issues: maintaining and enhancing environmental resources under global change; facilitating efficient and sustainable use of limited natural resources; engaging international development partners in the promotion of the nexus approach; and facilitating a transition to a green economy, especially with regard to agriculture. The DNC 2015 is organized by the UNU Institute for Integrated Management of Material Fluxes and of Resources (UNU-FLORES) as a follow-up to its workshop 'Advancing a Nexus Approach to the Sustainable Management of Water, Soil and Waste,' held from 11-12 November 2013 in Dresden, Germany.

3rd Global Soil Week

The 3rd Global Soil Week will provide a platform for discussions on issues related to soils and land, and facilitate the emergence of new initiatives and strengthen existing ones. The Week will be composed of workshops on topics that have emerged since the 1st Global Soil Week: carbon land management; soils and water; land rehabilitation; cities; land governance; economics of land and land degradation; land degradation neutral world (LDNW); soil and biomass for non-food purposes; and soils and food security. In addition, the agenda will include dialogues organized by various stakeholders, and lunch break dialogues with presentations on activities, ideas, research and experiences relating to soils and land. The event is hosted by the Global Soil Forum at the Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies (IASS), in partnership with several UN agencies, intergovernmental and international organizations and German government agencies.

UN Forum on Forests Eleventh Session (UNFF11)

The eleventh session of the UN Forum on Forests (UNFF11) will consider the future of the international arrangement on forests, based on challenges and its effectiveness. The meeting will also review progress in the implementation of the global objectives on forests and the non-legally binding instrument on all types of forests. Thematic issues under consideration will include sustainable forest management (SFM) and forest law enforcement as was as cooperation and coordination.

2015 Global Land Forum

The 2015 Global Land Forum will take place under the theme 'Land governance for inclusive development, justice and sustainability: time for action'. The event will bring together practitioners, land users, activists, policy makers and researchers from around the world. Participants will debate, share and plan joint action on people-centered land governance, with the aim of contributing to broader goals of poverty reduction, food security, environmental sustainability and human well-being and dignity, including within the context of the post-2015 development framework. The first day of the Forum will be dedicated to ‘Africa Day,' with a spotlight on land governance in Senegal and the Africa region. The second and third days will discuss issues from a global perspective. The fourth day includes a field trip, which will be followed by an Assembly on the fifth day. The event will include plenary sessions, workshops and a Marketplace of Ideas. The International Land Coalition (ILC) is organizing the event together with the Pan African Institute for Consumer Citizenship and Development (CICODEV Africa) in partnership with Cadre de Recherche et d'Action sur le Foncier au Sénégal (CRAFS) and others.

XXVII International Primatological Society Congress

The Great Apes Survival Partnership (GRASP) will gather over 800 of the world's leading primate experts, scientists and researchers at the XXVII International Primatological Society (IPS) Congress. GRASP's bid to host the meeting was built upon the theme, 'Global Connectivity to Ensure the Future of Primates,' and proposes to include Nairobi-based UN experts in areas such as climate change, deforestation, sustainable development, and civil conflict, among others, in IPS symposia, workshops and panels. The event will convene during 2018. The XXVI IPS Congress is scheduled to convene from 21-27 August 2016, in Chicago, Illinois, US.
