First Expert Panel Meeting on Forests and Food Security

UNGC Principles for Sustainable Soil Management Workshop
The UN Global Compact is convening a group of global experts and businesses to develop Global Principles for Sustainable Soil Management to address the economic, environmental and social aspects of soil health and provide context and linkages to relevant global issues. IV Mesoamerican Congress of Protected Areas
Launched by the Central American Commission on Environment and Development (CCAD) in 2003, the triennial Mesoamerican Congress of Protected Areas brings together experts from Mexico and the eight Central American Integration System (SICA) countries (Belize, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and Panama) and interested regional and international actors to dialogue, share experiences and propose initiatives involving protected areas, including marine protected areas, and their role in sustainable development. The IV Congress, organized by Costa Rica's National System of Conservation Areas (SINAC) and Environment Ministry (MINAE) with support from CCAD, German International Cooperation (GIZ), and the IUCN, will feature eight symposia addressing, inter alia: governance; knowledge management within protected areas; protected areas and climate change; protected areas as social and economic instruments; and cooperation and financing for protected areas. This event was originally scheduled for 2013, but was postponed until March 2014.

Fifteenth Rights and Resources Initiative Dialogue on Forests, Governance and Climate Change
The Rights and Resources Initiative (RRI) will host its 15th Dialogue on Forest, Governance and Climate Change, on 19 March 2014. Participants at the event in Washington, DC, US, will take stock of the agreement reached on REDD+ at the Warsaw Climate Change Conference as well as international efforts to promote the establishment of forest carbon rights in forested countries. The discussion is expected to consider opportunities and challenges presented by these developments and steps to ensure that the rights of Indigenous Peoples and other local communities are enhanced and safeguarded. Topics to be addressed include: what happened in Warsaw with implications for carbon rights and safeguards?; the status of forest carbon rights today; the World Bank methodological framework: status, challenges and opportunities; and the way forward on carbon rights, safeguards and REDD.

Green Growth Knowledge Platform Regional Practitioners' Workshop [rescheduled]
The Green Growth Knowledge Platform's (GGKP) Workshop on Green Growth in Africa, titled 'Pathways to Green Growth in Africa,' aims to: explore the rationale for green(er) growth in an African context; facilitate policy dialogue and knowledge sharing; and discuss practical implementation issues. The workshop will focus on setting an African green growth vision through thematic sessions and exploring linkages among natural resources management, renewable energy and greening infrastructure. Participants will, inter alia, focus on green growth landscapes in Africa, including a discussion on the specific challenges faced by African countries, such as high dependence on natural resources for growth and rapid infrastructure, and discuss green growth in practice, including discussions on forest-friendly growth in the Congo Basin and parallel sessions designed to facilitate an exchange of ideas and identify areas for collaboration.

Adaptation Futures 2014: Third International Climate Change Adaptation Conference

Building Resilience for Food and Nutrition Security
The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) 2020 Conference, which will convene from 15-17 May 2014, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, will bring together policymakers, practitioners and scholars to discuss how resilience can be strengthened for food and nutrition security. 46th GEF Council Meeting and GEF Assembly
The Global Environment Facility (GEF) Assembly will be held back-to-back with the 46th GEF Council meeting in Mexico. A report on the host city, Cancún, was considered at the 45th Council meeting in November 2013. The CSO Consultation, GEF Council and LDCF/SCCF Council Meetings will convene from 25-27 May, with the Council meeting beginning on 25 May and overlapping for half a day, on 27 May, with the CSO Consultation. The Assembly will convene from 28-30 May. All 183 member nations, including South Sudan – the GEF's newest member – will gather for the Assembly. The GEF Council meets twice a year, while the Assembly meets every four years to take major decisions, including endorsement of the next four-year GEF replenishment package.

Ecosystems, Economy and Society: How Large-scale Restoration Can Stimulate Sustainable Development

World Environment Day 2014
The UN General Assembly declared 2014 as the International Year of Small Island Developing States (SIDS). World Environment Day (WED) 2014 will be celebrated under the theme of SIDS, with the goal of raising awareness of their unique development challenges and successes regarding a range of environmental problems, including climate change, waste management, unsustainable consumption, degradation of natural resources, and extreme natural disasters. UNEP is also soliciting votes for the 2014 WED slogan through 5 March 2014. The winning slogan will be used to call on the global WED community to take action for islands.

2nd World Summit of Legislators
The 2nd World Summit of Legislators is expected to be the world's largest conference of parliamentarians, with over 500 participants representing legislative assemblies from all over the world in attendance. Parliamentarians at the three-day summit, which will take place at the Mexican Congress, are expected to agree to and ratify a resolution on climate, natural capital and forest legislation. This meeting follows the first World Summit of Legislators, which convened from 15-17 June 2012, in the Tiradentes Palace, the original seat of the Brazilian Congress. Since this first meeting, the Global Legislators Organisation (GLOBE) has established the GLOBE Climate Legislation Initiative (GCLI), the GLOBE Natural Capital Initiative (GNCI) and the GLOBE Forest Legislation Initiative (GFLI), all of which will report to the 2nd Summit, as well as provide national legislation examples put forward by GLOBE legislators. The GLOBE Natural Capital Initiative (GNCI) seeks to raise awareness on the benefits of ecosystem valuation and wealth accounting, in order to establish a political support-base for the introduction and long-term uptake of the natural capital approach. 20th World Congress of Soil Science
The Korean Society of Soil Science and Fertilizer will host the 20th World Congress of Soil Science (WCSS). The meeting will take advantage of the fact that the field of soil science is expanding because of the growing interest in food security and safety as well as environmental quality. In addition, many state-of-the-art emerging technologies being developed in other fields are available to adapt to soil science, creating an explosion of information and knowledge in the many fields of soil science. The Council of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) has approved the dates of the next Committee on Forestry (COFO), set for 23–27 June 2014. 2014 Caux Dialogue on Land and Security
The 2014 Caux Dialogue on Land and Security will bring together representatives from government, business and civil society to explore the potential of sustainable land management as a driver of peace, development and climate change mitigation. The Dialogue aims to: deepen understanding of links between land degradation and human security; share lessons learned and best practices for sustainable land restoration; examine potential for investment in land restoration and peace-building as paths to food security; present training resources available on the ground; and build the trust needed for ‘land-peace' policies, effective collaboration and partnerships. The UN General Assembly approved a resolution to organize a high-level plenary meeting in 2014 (the World Conference on Indigenous Peoples in 2014) to share perspectives and best practices on the realization of indigenous peoples' rights, including to pursue the objectives of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. The World Conference on Indigenous Peoples 2014 will be organized as a high-level plenary meeting of the 69th session of the UN General Assembly and supported by the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues, to share perspectives and best practices on the realization of the rights of indigenous peoples and to pursue the objectives of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.

CBD COP 12
The twelfth meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 12) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) will engage in a mid-term review of the implementation of the Strategic Plan and the Aichi targets. The theme of the meeting will be 'Biodiversity for Sustainable Development.' The Meeting of the Parties to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety (COP MOP 7) will take place immediately before COP 12.

CMS COP 11
Ecuador will host the eleventh meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 11) to the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) in November 2014, marking the first time that a CMS COP is held in Latin America. The decision was taken during the 41st Meeting of the Standing Committee, on 28 November 2013, in Bonn, Germany. The 42nd Meeting of the Standing Committee will take place 2-3 November and regional coordination meetings 3 November. Another Standing Committee meeting will be held 9 November upon closure of the COP.

ForestSAT 2014: A Bridge between Forest Sciences, Remote Sensing and Geo-Spatial Applications
Organized by several Italian institutions in coordination with the International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), the European Commission, European Space Agency (ESA), and European Environment Agency (EEA) and the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the ForestSAT 2014 conference will promote the integration of Earth observation with other geo‐spatial applications and traditional forest sciences. The conference covers all possible scientifically-based developments and applications of remote-sensing and geographic information system (GIS) tools for monitoring, mapping or modeling forest systems, and aims to facilitate a better understanding of their function and to support their inventory and sustainable management.

UN Forum on Forests Eleventh Session (UNFF11)
The eleventh session of the UN Forum on Forests (UNFF11) will consider the future of the international arrangement on forests, based on challenges and its effectiveness. The meeting will also review progress in the implementation of the global objectives on forests and the non-legally binding instrument on all types of forests.
