CBD International Workshop on Financing for Biodiversity

GRASP Regional Meeting – East Africa

Bioenergy from Forest Conference
The Bioenergy from Forest Conference will address the future of bioenergy, including the creation of and access to markets worldwide, the use of national forest resources in international business, and the incorporation of forest energy resources into national strategies. Technological issues to be discussed include combustion, boiler technologies, Combined Heat and Power (CHP), and conversion technologies. The conference is scheduled to address, inter alia: sustainability; the COOL Project; the future of bioenergy in Finland; fuel production; biomass combustion and power; and gasification. The final day will give participants an opportunity to take technical tours on fuel production technologies, transport and logistics. International Symposium on Agroecology for Food Security and Nutrition
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) is organizing this symposium to highlight existing practices in agroecology and exchange information on the latest research and science in the field. The symposium is expected to result in an action plan for a follow-up process for Africa and Asia; contributions to an international framework for research on agroecology, including relevant economic, social, environmental and climatic aspects; and informational material such as video interviews and agroecological practices for online sharing. The two-day preliminary agenda will include inter alia: a keynote on the landscape of agroecology; plenaries covering ecosystem services, social processes and virtuous cycles in agroecology; and a high-level segment. The symposium supports Strategic Objective 2 (“Increase and improve provision of Goods and Services from Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries in a sustainable manner”) of the FAO Strategic Framework.

2014 World Conference on Indigenous Peoples
The UN General Assembly approved a resolution to organize a high-level plenary meeting in 2014 (the World Conference on Indigenous Peoples in 2014) to share perspectives and best practices on the realization of indigenous peoples' rights, including to pursue the objectives of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. The World Conference on Indigenous Peoples 2014 will be organized as a high-level plenary meeting of the 69th session of the UN General Assembly and supported by the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues, to share perspectives and best practices on the realization of the rights of indigenous peoples and to pursue the objectives of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.

Africa Conference on Land Grabs 2014

Workshop on International Arrangement on Forests (IAF) beyond 2015
This workshop is being convened as a contribution to the work of the UN Forum on Forests (UNFF) in order to consider options for a future International Arrangement on Forests (IAF). The country-led initiative workshop will build on the work of the first Open-ended Intergovernmental Ad Hoc Expert Group on the International Arrangement on Forests (AHEG1), which considered views from Parties on the matter as well as the report of the Independent Assessment. CMS COP 11
Ecuador will host the eleventh meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 11) to the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) in November 2014, marking the first time that a CMS COP is held in Latin America. The decision was taken during the 41st Meeting of the Standing Committee, on 28 November 2013, in Bonn, Germany. The COP will be preceded by a High Level Ministerial meeting on 3 November. Another Standing Committee meeting will be held 9 November upon closure of the COP.

Second UN Conference on LLDCs
The 10-year Review Conference on the Implementation of the Almaty Programme of Action, titled ‘Addressing the Special Needs of Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDCs) within a New Global Framework for Transit Transport Cooperation for Landlocked and Transit Developing Countries in 2014,' has four key aims. It aims to: undertake a comprehensive appraisal of the implementation of the Almaty Programme of Action; identify international, regional, subregional and national international trade and transit transport cooperation policies and review transit transport systems within the context of new and emerging challenges, partnerships and opportunities; reaffirm the global commitment to addressing the special development needs of and the challenges faced by LLDCs; and mobilize international support and action by and for LLDCs, including the formulation and adoption of a renewed development partnership framework for the next decade. In advance of the conference, the Open-ended Intergovernmental Preparatory Committee for the Conference is expected to hold two sessions at UN Headquarters in New York, the US: the first from 12-13 June; and the second from 11-12 September.

ForestSAT 2014: A Bridge between Forest Sciences, Remote Sensing and Geo-Spatial Applications
Organized by several Italian institutions in coordination with the International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), the European Commission, European Space Agency (ESA), and European Environment Agency (EEA) and the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the ForestSAT 2014 conference will promote the integration of Earth observation with other geo‐spatial applications and traditional forest sciences. The conference covers all possible scientifically-based developments and applications of remote-sensing and geographic information system (GIS) tools for monitoring, mapping or modeling forest systems, and aims to facilitate a better understanding of their function and to support their inventory and sustainable management.

UNCCD 3rd Scientific Conference
