Third Session of the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) Plenary

The third session of the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) plenary will review progress made on the adopted IPBES work programme for 2014 – 2018, including the related budget and institutional arrangements for its implementation. In addition, the third session of the IPBES plenary will select the members of the Multidisciplinary Expert Panel (MEP) based on the nominations received from governments. The event will be preceded by consultations and a stakeholder day on 10-11 January.

Second meeting of the Open-ended Intergovernmental Ad Hoc Expert Group on the International Arrangement on Forests (AHEG2)

The Ad Hoc Expert Group to the UN Forum on Forests (UNFF) will hold its second meeting (AHEG2) in order to review the International Arrangement on Forests (IAF). Expected outputs from AHEG2 include recommendations on an IAF beyond 2015 based on inputs from stakeholders and an independent review of the IAF multi-year programme of work. In order to facilitate its work, AHEG2 will consider input on the future of IAF provided by member States and other stakeholders, as long as such inputs are received before 5 December 2014.

Second Meeting of the UNECE/FAO Teams of Specialists on Forest Sector Outlook

The UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) Forestry and Timber Section team of specialists will consider the forest sector outlook for the period 2014-2017, based on suggestions from surveys, input from members, and outcomes from the first meeting of the Team of Specialists. This meeting will also consider guidance from the Integrated Programme of Work for 2014-2017 adopted at Metsä2013, which calls for greater coherence among regional outlook studies.

Expert Group Meeting on an Optional Protocol to UNDRIP

This group will discuss a study of the possibility of an optional protocol to the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), focusing on land, territories and resource rights, as well as the right to self-determination, self-government and autonomy. The results of the meeting will be reported to the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (PFII) at its fourteenth session in May 2015.

INTERLAKEN+10: Governing Forest Landscapes

The Governments of Indonesia, Mexico, South Africa, Switzerland and Ukraine will convene the Country Led Initiative (CLI) in support of the UN Forum on Forests (UNFF). The theme for this CLI, which will focus on forest governance, is ‘lessons learnt from ten years of experience and the way forward post-2015'. The meeting is meant to generate recommendations on how to integrate forest governance into the UNFF and the post-2015 development agenda. This event will be the last meeting before the eleventh session of the UNFF, where the International Arrangement on Forests (IAF), the governance framework of the global forest policy dialogue, will be reviewed.

The Economics of Climate Change Mitigation Options in the Forestry Sector

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) is convening an online conference to discuss the costs and benefits of various options for climate change mitigation in the forestry sector including REDD+, green building, and the promotion of bioenergy. The conference will be organized under two themes: ‘climate change mitigation through forest management interventions', and ‘climate change mitigation through improved wood utilization'. The online discussion will take place from 6-27 February 2015.

Beyond Enforcement: Communities, Governance, Incentives and Sustainable Use in Combating Illegal Wildlife Trade

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Sustainable Use and Livelihoods Specialist Group (SULi), the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED), the Austrian Ministry for the Environment, the ARC Centre of Excellence for Environmental Decisions (CEED) and TRAFFIC are holding a symposium to explore the roles of communities, governance, incentives and sustainable use in combating illegal wildlife trade. This symposium seeks to evaluate whether and under what circumstances community-based interventions are likely to achieve success in combating current patterns of illegal use and trade of wildlife (both plants and animals), and provide examples, lessons learnt and guidance in order to support governments, institutions and organizations in meeting relevant international commitments. Outputs of the meeting will be presented at the inter-governmental Conference on Illegal Wildlife Trade in Kasane, Botswana, in March 2015.

Major Groups-led Initiative in Support of UNFF

The Major Groups participating in the UN Forum on Forests (UNFF) are convening a workshop on sustainable forest management (SFM) under the theme, ‘Designing the vehicles for securing the means of implementation'. Expected outputs from the meeting are recommendations to be submitted to the eleventh meeting of the UNFF (UNFF11). The workshop is being supported by the Governments of Nepal and Germany in collaboration with the Major Groups Partnership on Forests (MGPoF), the UNFF Secretariat and the International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO).

UNCCD 3rd Scientific Conference

The UNCCD 3rd Scientific Conference will take place from 9-12 March 2015, in Mexico, and will address the theme "Combating desertification, land degradation and drought for poverty reduction and sustainable development – the contribution of science, technology, traditional knowledge and practices”. It will be held during the fourth special session of the Committee on Science and Technology (CST S-4) of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD). The Scientific Conference aims harness a wide range of scientific, local and traditional knowledge to achieve poverty reduction and sustainable development in areas susceptible to desertification, land degradation and drought. The Conference is being organized by the UNCCD Secretariat and the Scientific and Traditional Knowledge for Sustainable Development (STK4SD) Consortium.

IV Mediterranean Forest Week

The IV Mediterranean Forest Week is being convened by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), the Government of Spain, FOREST EUROPE and other partners in order to explore the role of Mediterranean forests in the green economy. The Week will bring together stakeholders to explore policy considerations from the Tlemcen Declaration and Strategic Framework on Mediterranean Forests (SFMF), promote resilient forests, consider the integration of other sectors within national forest programmes and develop an overall vision for the future of Mediterranean forests and woodlands.

16th Annual World Bank Conference on Land and Poverty

The 2015 conference will take place under the theme, ‘Linking Land Tenure and Use for Shared Prosperity,' in recognition of the role of land tenure in affecting asset distribution, land use patterns and other socio-economic outcomes at landscape, community and household levels. The conference is expected to bring together over 1,000 participants from around the world, including representatives from governments, the private sector, civil society and academia to discuss innovative approaches to improving land governance. Sessions will address ten themes on land tenure and prosperity through keynote lectures, policy roundtables and paper and poster presentations. An innovation fair will showcase the role of open data and technological innovations in improving land governance. A pre-conference workshop, ‘Monitoring land governance,' will take place in advance of the opening session on March 23 and a post-conference learning day will convene on March 27.

Dresden Nexus Conference 2015

The Dresden Nexus Conference (DNC) 2015 will convene under the theme 'Global Change, Sustainable Development Goals and the Nexus Approach,' and include participants from UN organizations, UN University (UNU) institutes, governments, international organizations, as well as individual researchers and representatives of non-governmental organizations (NGOs). Focusing on the contributions of a nexus approach to the management of water, soil and waste, the DNC 2015 will address the following issues: maintaining and enhancing environmental resources under global change; facilitating efficient and sustainable use of limited natural resources; engaging international development partners in the promotion of the nexus approach; and facilitating a transition to a green economy, especially with regard to agriculture. The DNC 2015 is organized by the UNU Institute for Integrated Management of Material Fluxes and of Resources (UNU-FLORES) as a follow-up to its workshop 'Advancing a Nexus Approach to the Sustainable Management of Water, Soil and Waste,' held from 11-12 November 2013 in Dresden, Germany.

3rd Global Soil Week

The 3rd Global Soil Week will provide a platform for discussions on issues related to soils and land, and facilitate the emergence of new initiatives and strengthen existing ones. The Week will be composed of workshops on topics that have emerged since the 1st Global Soil Week: carbon land management; soils and water; land rehabilitation; cities; land governance; economics of land and land degradation; land degradation neutral world (LDNW); soil and biomass for non-food purposes; and soils and food security. In addition, the agenda will include dialogues organized by various stakeholders, and lunch break dialogues with presentations on activities, ideas, research and experiences relating to soils and land. The event is hosted by the Global Soil Forum at the Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies (IASS), in partnership with several UN agencies, intergovernmental and international organizations and German government agencies.

UN Forum on Forests Eleventh Session (UNFF11)

The eleventh session of the UN Forum on Forests (UNFF11) will consider the future of the international arrangement on forests, based on challenges and its effectiveness. The meeting will also review progress in the implementation of the global objectives on forests and the non-legally binding instrument on all types of forests. Thematic issues under consideration will include sustainable forest management (SFM) and forest law enforcement as was as cooperation and coordination.

2015 Global Land Forum

The 2015 Global Land Forum will take place under the theme 'Land governance for inclusive development, justice and sustainability: time for action'. The event will bring together practitioners, land users, activists, policy makers and researchers from around the world. Participants will debate, share and plan joint action on people-centered land governance, with the aim of contributing to broader goals of poverty reduction, food security, environmental sustainability and human well-being and dignity, including within the context of the post-2015 development framework. The first day of the Forum will be dedicated to ‘Africa Day,' with a spotlight on land governance in Senegal and the Africa region. The second and third days will discuss issues from a global perspective. The fourth day includes a field trip, which will be followed by an Assembly on the fifth day. The event will include plenary sessions, workshops and a Marketplace of Ideas. The International Land Coalition (ILC) is organizing the event together with the Pan African Institute for Consumer Citizenship and Development (CICODEV Africa) in partnership with Cadre de Recherche et d'Action sur le Foncier au Sénégal (CRAFS) and others.

Desertland II

Desertland, the Conference on Desertification and Land Degradation, will bring together academics, civil society, governments, scientists and other stakeholders to discuss challenges related to desertification and land degradation and develop appropriate solutions. The conference will consider management strategies for areas affected by drought and land degradation. Participants will focus on seven topics: land management and land degradation; water harvesting and water saving techniques in drylands; acidity and drought; soil hydrology; sediment transport and overland flow; GIS applications in wetlands and drylands; and soil and water management. Day one will address ‘Water Security: Responses to local, regional and global challenges.' The second day, which takes place on the World Day to Combat Desertification, will focus on the theme ‘Preventing and Combatting Land Degradation in Drylands'. The University of Ghent and the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) are organizing the conference.

Fourteenth World Forestry Congress

The 2015 World Forestry Congress, the first to be held in Africa, will come together under the theme, ‘Forests and People – Investing in a sustainable future'. The Congress, convened by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) and the government of South Africa, will consider how forests can be mainstreamed into global discussions on sustainable development and will facilitate the development of partnerships to address global forestry issues.

World Soil Day 2015

The FAO Conference, in June 2013, unanimously endorsed World Soil Day and requested official adoption at the 68th UN General Assembly. In December 2013, the 68th UN General Assembly declared the 5th of December as World Soil Day. World Soil Day 2015 will focus on the theme 'Soils, a solid ground for life'.

XXVII International Primatological Society Congress

The Great Apes Survival Partnership (GRASP) will gather over 800 of the world's leading primate experts, scientists and researchers at the XXVII International Primatological Society (IPS) Congress. GRASP's bid to host the meeting was built upon the theme, 'Global Connectivity to Ensure the Future of Primates,' and proposes to include Nairobi-based UN experts in areas such as climate change, deforestation, sustainable development, and civil conflict, among others, in IPS symposia, workshops and panels. The event will convene during 2018. The XXVI IPS Congress is scheduled to convene from 21-27 August 2016, in Chicago, Illinois, US.

25th IUFRO World Congress

The International Union of Forest Research Organization (IUFRO) announced the convening of the first World Congress to be held in Latin America. The Congress will facilitate the exchange of knowledge and experiences on forest research and should allow for greater participation among researchers from Latin America.
