Climate Symposium 2014 is sponsored by the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT), the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP), the European Commission, the European Space Agency (ESA), and the city of Darmstadt. The symposium will: be an important step towards further developing an efficient and sustained international space-based Earth observing system; bring together international experts in climate observations, research, analysis and modeling; and emphasize the role of space-based Earth observations in improving knowledge of the climate at global and regional scales, and in assessing models used for climate projections. The symposium is organized around the theme 'Enhanced Understanding of Climate Processes through Earth Observation'. Participants will discuss the proposed Architecture for Sustained Climate Monitoring from Space, and consider how Earth observation contributes to future developments in climate prediction and climate change projection. Key discussion themes will also include: clouds, circulation and climate sensitivity; the changing water cycle; the cryosphere in a warming world; ocean circulation and regional sea-level rise; prediction and attribution of extremes (from climate to weather); and regional climate variability and change (enabling climate services). The symposium is expected to: benefit climate-related risk management; facilitate the development of responsible and affordable climate change mitigation and adaptation options; and initiate a process for creating a joint action plan for planning and developing an international space-based climate observing system.
