Fifth African Rift Geothermal Conference (ARGeo - C5)

The 5th African Rift Geothermal Conference (ARGeo - C5) is being organized to promote the development, exploration, use and financing of geothermal energy projects. ARGeo - C5, themed 'Geothermal: Solution to Africa Energy Needs,' will serve as an information-sharing platform and will facilitate regional cooperation. The main conference, which will take place 29-31 October, will feature a range of sessions geared toward exploring: risk mitigation; how to attract private developers; fast-tracking projects; stimulating the growth of the industry through investment; and the development, construction and operation of geothermal plants. Participants also have the option of participating in short courses, such as 'Improving Success in Drilling' and 'Financing Geothermal Projects' on 27-28 October. After the conference, an optional field trip on 1-2 November is offered. The African Rift Geothermal Development Facility (ARGeo) Project is organizing the conference in partnership with the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Government of Tanzania. The UNEP-ARGeo Programme is a project funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) that encourages the development of geothermal energy sources in East Africa to realize their untapped potential and reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. It was officially launched in 2010 at ARGeo - C3.

REDD+ Academy – Asia

The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the UN Collaborative Programme on Reducing Emissions from Deforestation (UN-REDD) are convening the first in a series of REDD+ Academies aimed at training REDD+ decision-makers in issues such as national REDD+ strategies, safeguards and stakeholder engagement. This session will bring together members of the Indonesian Parliament, environmental journalists, and REDD+ future leaders and practitioners from the sixteen UN-REDD partner countries across the region. The Academy will be supported by a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) to be launched in 2015.

5th Conference of the International Society for Integrated Disaster Risk Management

The 5th Conference of the International Society for Integrated Disaster Risk Management (IDRiM 2014) will meet under the theme ‘Building Disaster Resilient Communities'. The conference aims to bridge gaps and promote science-based solutions to empower local communities to advance disaster reduction, adapt to climate change and promote sustainable development. It also intends to: address opportunities for action through contributions from the areas of disaster science, technology, policy and practice; and stimulate a “next generation of ideas and actions” for disaster reduction. Conference themes will address cross-cutting issues, such as: disaster risk management, sustainable development, resilience building, vulnerability reduction, risk assessment and governance, risk financing, living with uncertainty, transformative processes, cultural recognition and change, poverty reduction, wellbeing, climate change adaptation, crisis communication and communities of practice. Conference participants will reflect on how theory, method and implementation presented by these processes can help to build disaster resilient communities. More specifically, the conference will address: building disaster resilient societies; integrating climate change and development goals; resilient cities, including case studies and best practices; creating an enabling environment to achieve resilience; emerging tools for integrated disaster management; risks and critical infrastructure protection; risk governance frameworks for resilient communities; and strategies for long-term, post-disaster mitigation measures.

Eighth Meeting of the IRENA Council

The 8th Meeting of the Council of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) will take place from 3-4 November, in Abu Dhabi, the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Sessions organized as part of the meeting will include: the Director-General's report on implementation of the Agency's 2014-2015 work program and budget; and discussions on the outcomes on the 2014 UN Climate Summit, and renewable energy and energy transformation, including in relation to IRENA's 'REthinking Energy' flagship publication. Participants at the Council Meeting will include representatives from the 21 Council member States and delegations from other IRENA member States. Prior to the Council meeting, the meetings of IRENA's Programme and Strategy Committee (PSC) and Administration and Finance Committee (AFC) will be held, on 2 November. The IRENA Council facilitates consultations and cooperation among the Agency's members and considers the draft work program and budget, and the annual report. Two committees, the PSC and AFC, assist the Council in its work.

Ecuador will host the eleventh meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 11) to the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) in November 2014, marking the first time that a CMS COP is held in Latin America. The decision was taken during the 41st Meeting of the Standing Committee, on 28 November 2013, in Bonn, Germany. The COP will be preceded by a High Level Ministerial meeting on 3 November. Another Standing Committee meeting will be held 9 November upon closure of the COP.

The Asia Pacific Ministerial Conference on Housing and Urban Development (APMCHUD) was established in 2006 to promote sustainable housing and urban development for human settlements in the Asia-Pacific Region. The theme of the 5th APMCHUD is 'Equal Opportunity for Sustainable Development'. Sub-themes will include: inclusive urban planning; upgrading informal settlements; inclusive technology for the delivery of basic services; financing sustainable housing; and urban development for equal opportunity responding to natural and climate change-related disasters.

Fifth International Forum on Energy for Sustainable Development

The Fifth International Forum on Energy for Sustainable Development will emphasize accomplishing the three Sustainable Energy for All (SE4All) objectives through a regional agenda and sharing of experiences, namely universal access to modern energy services, doubling energy efficiency and doubling the share of renewable energy by 2030 globally. The Forum is organized by the Government of Tunisia and the UN Economic Commissions for Europe, Western Asia, Asia and the Pacific, Latin America and the Caribbean, and Africa. A high-level dialogue on 'International Cooperation towards Sustainable Energy for All' is expected to adopt a declaration reaffirming the roles of key stakeholders and calling for joining efforts to achieve the SE4All objectives. The forum will also include a workshop on energy efficiency investments and the launch of a new UN Development Account project on promoting renewable energy investments.

Social Pre-COP

The Social PreCOP will be held from 4-7 November 2014, ahead of UNFCCC COP 20. It will welcome civil society organizations from all over the world, including those attending the UNFCCC negotiations or involved in other UN processes, as well as organizations with no formal UN status. The Social Pre-COP will, inter alia: provide civil society with an opportunity to contribute ideas and proposals for the new climate agreement; ensure that its agenda is aligned with the current themes negotiated under the Convention to enable viable inputs to the formal process; and facilitate regional balance and different perspectives. 2nd Technical Workshop on the Draft Revised Guidelines for the Technical Review of Annex I GHG Inventories

The second technical workshop on the draft revised guidelines for the technical review of greenhouse gas (GHG) inventories from Annex I Parties will take place in Bonn, Germany. The workshop is part of the work programme on the revision of the guidelines for the review of biennial reports (BRs) and national communications (NCs) for developed country parties. It will allow for further discussion on outstanding issues to advance the text of the revised UNFCCC Annex I inventory review guidelines. The workshop, open to all parties, will be organized by the UNFCCC Secretariat under the guidance of the Chair of the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA). A draft of the revised UNFCCC Annex I inventory review guidelines prepared by the UNFCCC Secretariat, as per the request of the 40th session of the SBSTA, will serve as input to the discussions.

2014 APEC Economic Leaders' Week

The 2014 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders' Week, hosted by China, will take place in Beijing from 5-11 November, and will include several high-level and other meetings, convened under the theme 'Shaping the Future through Asia-Pacific Partnership'. Key events taking place during the week are: the Concluding Senior Officials' Meeting (CSOM), from 5-6 November; the 26th APEC Ministerial Meeting (AMM), from 7-8 November; and the 22nd APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting (AELM), from 10-11 November. Other events hosted during the week include: the APEC CEO Summit, from 8-10 November; APEC Business Advisory Council (ABAC) Dialogue with Leaders; and Leaders' spouse programs. The Leaders' Week will also mark the culmination of the 2014 APEC China Year. International Conference on Solar Energy Technology in Development Cooperation

The Austrian Development Agency in cooperation with AEE-INTEC, BSW Solar and GIZ sponsors a two-day conference to explore issues related to providing sustainable energy to the two billion people in developing countries that do not have access to modern energy supplies, while curbing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and meeting growing energy demand. In particular, participants will share knowledge and experiences on projects, financing, and social, economic and political barriers associated with the diffusion of solar technologies. Through lectures, workshops and poster shows, the conference will cover: needs and market development for solar energy; financing for solar energy in developing countries; photovoltaics (PV) in development cooperation - moving from off-grid rural applications to large-scale deployment; solar thermal applications such as drying, air heating, process heat, heating and cooling, and domestic hot water; solar energy for decentralized water treatment systems; and capacity building. The organizers are expecting participants from a broad spectrum of professions, including manufacturers, suppliers, installers, energy consultants, elected officials, programme planners, financiers, scientists, engineers and students.

A technical discussion of issues related to Articles 5, 7 and 8 of the Kyoto Protocol, including an update of the conservativeness factors for adjustments (contained in Decision 20/CMP.1), will be held on 7 November 2014, in Bonn, Germany. The workshop is organized by the UNFCCC Secretariat, based on a request by the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice at its 40th session (SBSTA 40). Workshop on Self-Consumption of Renewables: The Role of Storage in Revolutionising Grid Infrastructure

This workshop, organized by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), will examine ways for battery storage technologies to transform grid infrastructure and support on-site renewable electricity generation by consumers. The event will also seek to identify best practices, regulatory challenges and lessons to be highlighted in a forthcoming IRENA technology roadmap for electricity storage. The workshop will have a maximum number of 30 participants, comprising policymakers, industry representatives and academics, among others, who will also receive complimentary access to the 'Energy Storage Summit' held on 6 November, in Tokyo, Japan. The event is part of a series of workshops, the first one of which, titled 'International Energy Storage Policy and Regulation,' was organized on 27 March in Düsseldorf, Germany. The third workshop in the series, on 'Supporting Small- and Large-scale Deployment of Renewables through Electricity Storage,' will take place on 3 December in New Delhi, India.

International Conference on Mountain People Adapting to Change

The International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) is organizing an international conference on 'Mountain People Adapting to Change: Solutions Beyond Boundaries Bridging Science, Policy, and Practice'. Noting that the rapid environmental change in the Hindu Kush Himalayas has outpaced adaptation techniques, the organizers aim to fill gaps in knowledge about local trends and global climate change and develop solutions that "look beyond political, sectoral and national boundaries". Over 200 experts and stakeholders are anticipated to convene at the conference, which is expected to produce valuable insights for mountainous regions beyond the Hindu Kush Himalayas. The primary objectives of the conference are "share evidence-based scientific knowledge; boost awareness and engagement; and foster partnerships for action".

REN21 Renewables Academy 2014

The Renewable Energy Policy Network for the 21st Century (REN21) Academy 2014, organized from 10-12 November in Bonn, Germany, will take stock of renewable energy developments over the past decade and explore ways to further advance the global energy transition with renewables. The event will convene over plenary, lunch and coffee networking, and parallel thematic sessions. India Clean Cookstoves Forum 2014

The India Clean Cookstoves Forum (ICCF) 2014, which aims to tackle barriers to the large-scale adoption of improved cookstoves (ICS) in India, will feature a practitioner workshop, conference and business model workshop. The practitioner workshop will take place on the first day and feature in-depth technical discussions on marketing, distribution networks, financing, gender and product design. Emphasis will be placed on increasing demand for and supply of ICS. The conference, to be held the second day, will focus on market transformation and ways to make ICS available in all Indian households. Representatives from Indian industry, business, banks, the government and the cookstove sector will offer their ideas for the best path to widespread adoption, through everything from marketing to government policies. On the third day, the business model workshop will serve to encourage, analyze and improve the business models of new entrepreneurs in this sector, to make them more attractive to investors. Expected participants at the Forum are practitioners, project developers, investors, banks, researchers, social enterprises, government, donor agencies, foundations and NGOs. The German International Cooperation (GIZ), Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves, India's Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Tata Trusts and the Shell Foundation are partnering to organize the Forum.

IEA World Energy Outlook 2014 Launch

The International Energy Agency's (IEA) 'World Energy Outlook 2014' (WEO 2014) report will be launched on 12 November. The 2014 edition will comprise an analysis of medium- and longer-term energy trends, including latest data and developments of relevance for energy security, the economy and the environment. The report will cover: oil, natural gas and renewables; energy efficiency; energy-related carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions; fossil-fuel and renewable energy subsidies; and universal access to modern energy services. WEO 2014 will also provide in-depth analyses on energy sector investment, Africa and nuclear power. The WEO Special Reports 'World Energy Investment Outlook' and 'Africa Energy Outlook' were released on 3 June and 13 October 2014, respectively.

Second Preparatory Committee meeting for Third UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction

A second session of the Preparatory Committee for the Third International Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) is expected to develop the draft post-2015 DRR framework. In addition to negotiations on this document, technical workshops will convene to address: indicators, monitoring and review process for the post-2015 framework; and integration of disaster risks in financial regulation. The Chair is also expected to hold two dialogue sessions with major groups. The Third International Conference on DRR will be held in Sendai, Japan, in March 2015.

Conference on EU Energy Union

The European Commission (EC), in cooperation with the Directorate-General for Energy and the Directorate-General for Enterprise and Industry, is organizing a conference under the theme 'How to shape Energy Policy so as to boost European competitiveness?'. The conference aims to analyze how the EU can achieve stable and affordable energy prices, increase industrial competitiveness and simultaneously meet climate and environmental objectives. Topics of discussion will include, inter alia, domestic energy resources, taxes and the EU emissions trading system (ETS). Analysis and Management of Changing Risks for Natural Hazards

This conference is the culmination of two European Commission (EC) projects: Changing Hydro-meteorological Risks as Analyzed by a New Generation of European Scientists (CHANGES); and Increasing Resilience through Earth Observation (IncREO). It aims to facilitate the exchange of ideas related to effective risk management strategies. Participants will also discuss research results on the effects of changing hydro-meteorological risks and the development of innovative methodologies for quantitative hazard and risk forecasts. The Third Hemispheric Encounter of the Inter-American Network for Disaster Mitigation (INDM) will consider the theme 'Integrating Disaster Risk Management and Adaptation to Climate Change in the Development Agenda'. A meeting of the Inter-American Committee on Natural Disaster Reduction (IACNRD) will take place in parallel on 25 November, followed on 26 November by a Meeting of the Subregional Specialized Inter-governmental Organizations (IGO) on Disaster Risk Management that also serve as the Regional Focal Points for INDM, namely the Central American Integration System's (SICA) Center for the Prevention of Natural Disasters in Central America (CEPREDENAC), CARICOM's Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA), and the Andean Community's Committee for the Prevention and Attention to Disasters (CAPRADE). GeoPower Global Congress 2014

Global Landscapes Forum

The second Global Landscapes Forum (GLF) will be convened at the margins of the 20th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UNFCCC by the CIGAR Consortium's Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR), the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Government of Peru. 12th Development and Climate Days

The 12th Development and Climate Days will be held on the sidelines of the 20th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 20) to the UNFCCC. The slogan of the event, 'Zero poverty. Zero emissions. Within a generation' draws attention to the need for climate change mitigation, adaptation and increased resilience in order to eradicate poverty. The programme for the conference includes a series of sessions directed toward integrating climate and poverty reduction targets. Representatives from the intergovernmental, public, private, non-profit and media sectors will elaborate on the 'zero-zero' vision, pitch ideas for achieving these goals, discuss potential financing pathways, consider radical adaptation measures, and lead games on trade-offs and spurring political change. 2014 Climate and Health Summit

Organized in parallel with the 20th session of the UNFCCC Conference of the Parties (COP 20), the third annual Climate and Health Summit will raise awareness about climate change's negative effects on health and mitigation's potential to create a "cleaner, healthier and more equitable world". The Summit aims to ensure health considerations are included in negotiations toward a 2015 agreement on climate change. The Global Climate and Health Alliance, organizer of the Summit, hopes to galvanize the international health community in advance of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) and COP 21 in 2015. International Conference on South-South Cooperation on Climate Change

The International Ecosystem Management Partnership (IEMP) is organizing a conference in recognition of the growing role of South-South cooperation as a complement to North-South partnership on climate change. The International Conference on South-South Cooperation aims to raise awareness about this growing role, identify opportunities and challenges, agree on enabling conditions for promoting South-South cooperation, and create consensus for solidifying South-South cooperation's part in the expected 2015 agreement on climate change. Apart from an opening address and ministerial forum, the conference will hold six high-level panels in plenary on: science and knowledge for climate policy; adaptation and livelihood; capacity building for decision makers and practitioners; technology transfer for clean energy; ecosystem-based adaptation and mitigation; and enabling conditions. 15th Delhi Sustainable Development Summit (DSDS 2015)

The 15th edition of the Delhi Sustainable Development Summit (DSDS 2015) will focus on ‘Sustainable Development Goals and Dealing with Climate Change'. First India Renewable Energy Global Investment Promotion Meet and Expo

3rd Global Soil Week

The 3rd Global Soil Week will provide a platform for discussions on issues related to soils and land, and facilitate the emergence of new initiatives and strengthen existing ones. IEA Bioenergy Conference 2015

The 2015 International Energy Agency (IEA) Bioenergy Conference will center on recent research and market developments in bioenergy, including: challenges across bioenergy value chains; and cross-cutting topics, such as environmental sustainability, socioeconomic issues and trade. The conference will include a special session dedicated to industrial developments and applications, which will feature presentations on German developments. In addition to presentations, the event will include opportunities for business-to-business meetings, a social programme, technical field trips, and a poster exhibition. The conference is supported by the German Ministry of Food and Agriculture.

2016 IUCN World Conservation Congress

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) World Congress meets every four years to bring together leaders from government, the public sector, non-governmental organizations, business, UN agencies and indigenous and grass-roots organizations to discuss and decide on solutions to environment and development challenges worldwide. The event will hold a public forum consisting of debates, workshops, dialogues, round-table discussions, training courses, music and exhibitions, as well as a Members\' Assembly that will deliberate on IUCN resolutions and recommendations regarding key conservation issues.

Expo 2017: Future Energy

The international Expo 2017 will take place in Astana, Kazakhstan, and will aim to promote the most appropriate and viable sustainability-driven action plans to address the possibilities of future energy. The Expo, organized under the theme 'Future Energy' and the sub-theme 'Solutions for Tackling Humankind's Greatest Challenge,' will address future energy from several perspectives, including: exploration of stategies, programmes and technologies for sustainable energy development; promotion of energy security and efficiency; and the encouragement of renewable energy use. Venues for the World's Fairs and their themes are determined by taking into account political, economic, geographical and cultural contexts. The history of World's Fairs extends back to “the Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of all Nations,” which took place in London in 1851.
