Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety COP-MOP 7

The seventh meeting of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) Conference of the Parties serving as Meeting of the Parties (MOP) to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety is scheduled for 29 September-3 October 2014. Among other issues, the meeting is expected to address: handling, transport, packaging and identification (HTPI) of living modified organisms (LMOs); risk assessment and risk management; and socio-economic considerations.

25th Annual SPREP Meeting

The 25th annual meeting of the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) will review progress over the past year, and discuss institutional reform, regional conventions, corporate services, regional cooperation, and the 2015 work programme and budget. The meeting of officials will be followed by a high-level ministerial meeting on 3 October to discuss climate change financing, ocean conservation and management, and countries' follow-up to the Third Conference on Small Island Developing States (SIDS).

African Regional Workshop on NAMAs

The UNFCCC Secretariat is organizing an African Regional Wokshop on Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions (NAMAs) to: facilitate the exchange of best practices and lessons learnt in preparation and implementation of NAMAs by providing a platform to showcase NAMAs and innovative financing options; collaborate with international partners to conduct the workshops and ensure synergy, coherence, cost effectiveness and avoid duplication; provide a platform for networking by bringing experts of developing countries and international organizations/donors together; provide partners from international organizations with an opportunity to better understand capacity building needs of countries in the region so that they can target their technical support to meet specific needs of developing countries; and explore how and by what means the experiences gained in implementation of the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) standards could be linked with NAMAs.

IV EUROCLIMA Seminar

The fourth meeting of the EUROCLIMA Programme participants, which represents their first meeting since the Programme entered Phase II, will bring together EUROCLIMA national focal points, EU officials, and experts from associated organizations, namely the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), the UN Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), and the Interamerican Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA). The first day will be devoted to interaction with the Iberoamerican Network of Climate Change Offices (RIOCC), which is holding its 11th annual meeting in Lima, Peru, from 30 September-1 October. The second day will look at EUROCLIMA in the context of the EU's recently-approved Indicative Cooperation Programme for Latin America for 2014-2020, preparations for COP 20, plans for EUROCLIMA in the 2014-2016 period, and presentations on EUROCLIMA work at the national level. The third day will examine mainstreaming climate change into development policy, strategic mitigation and adaptation measures, and promoting capacity building and knowledge interchange.

8th Meeting of the Standing Committee on Finance

The eighth meeting of the UNFCCC Standing Committee on Finance (SCF) will take place in Bonn, Germany. Issues on the provisional agenda of the meeting include: the biennial assessment and overview of climate finance flows; fifth review of the financial mechanism; 2014 and 2015 Forums of the SCF; draft guidante to the financial mechanism operating entities; financing for forests; measurement, reporting and verification (MRV); and the report of the SCF to the 20th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UNFCCC (COP 20).

Integrating Migration into Development: Diaspora as a Development Enabler

An international workshop on ‘Integrating Migration into Development: Diaspora as a Development Enabler' will focus on the interrelationships between migration and the three pillars of sustainable development (economic, social and environmental), and will include the contributions of migrants to development. The event is being co-organized by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the International Organization for Migration (IOM). The workshop will focus on the positive impacts of migrants and migration on development. It will feature some environmental panels that will discuss migration as an adaptation strategy.

CBD COP 12

The twelfth meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 12) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) will engage in a mid-term review of the implementation of the Strategic Plan and the Aichi targets. Caribbean Renewable Energy Forum 2014

The Caribbean Renewable Energy Forum (CREF) 2014, organized by New Energy Events, is a networking and discussion forum aimed at the region's governments, utilities, developers and financers. The event will comprise a number of networking sessions, roundtables, presentations and debates taking place in parallel with 'country roadshows' and thematic discussions. First Carbon-CAP Stakeholder Workshop

The first stakeholder workshop of the Carbon-CAP project will focus on the theme of 'The Role of Consumption-based Emissions in Climate Policy,' and will be funded by the EU's Seventh Programme for Research (FP7). Consortium members will present research results from the first year of the project. Experts from around the world will be invited to participate and contribute to maximizing the event output for the project's future work. Three sessions, held over two days, will include presentations on: carbon footprint models; options and business experience with consumption-based environmental policies; and interactive modeling of transformation scenarios. The Carbon-CAP project has two objectives: stimulating innovative European and international climate policies through improved knowledge based on consumption emissions; and realizing a more effective policy mix for moving to a competitive low-carbon economy in 2050.

Fourth Climate Change and Development Conference (CCDA-IV)

In recognition of 2014 as the year of agriculture, the fourth Climate Change and Development Conference (CCDA-IV) will take place under the theme 'Africa Can Feed Africa Now: Translating Climate Knowledge into Action'. This iteration of the conference is exploring how evolving knowledge of climate can create sustainable agricultural production systems in Africa, so that it can feed itself and support the socio-economic development of its people. The impact of climate change on vulnerable groups, such as farmers, women, youth and pastoralists, will be at the center of the discussions. Each year, CCDA brings together stakeholders from civil society, academia, the policy arena and intergovernmental organizations to discuss the interrelationships between climate change and development, with a focus on opportunities, best practices, different approaches, strategies and planning. The event is organized under the auspices of the Climate for Development in Africa (ClimDev-Africa) Programme, which is a consortium of the African Union Commission (AUC), the UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) and the African Development Bank (AfDB).

Third Workshop of the LEDS-LAC Regional Platform

Chile's Environment Ministry and the UN Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) are co-hosting the Third Workshop of the Latin American Regional Platform on Low Emission Strategies (LEDS-LAC) of the Global Alliance on Development Strategies Low in Emissions (LEDS Global Partnership) under the theme 'From Planning to Implementation'. The Workshop will provide a forum for officials from Latin American governments and international organizations as well as technical experts and other stakeholders in the region to share experiences and best practices, participate in training, establish collaborative links and work, and discuss innovative ways to achieve low-carbon development that is also resilient to the impacts of climate change. It also will seek to construct a shared vision, find synergies with other regional initiatives and discuss the priorities, services and collaborative activities the Regional Platform should address in its 2015 work plan.

Climate Symposium 2014

Climate Symposium 2014 is sponsored by the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT), the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP), the European Commission, the European Space Agency (ESA), and the city of Darmstadt. The symposium will: be an important step towards further developing an efficient and sustained international space-based Earth observing system; bring together international experts in climate observations, research, analysis and modeling; and emphasize the role of space-based Earth observations in improving knowledge of the climate at global and regional scales, and in assessing models used for climate projections. The symposium is organized around the theme 'Enhanced Understanding of Climate Processes through Earth Observation'. Participants will discuss the proposed Architecture for Sustained Climate Monitoring from Space, and consider how Earth observation contributes to future developments in climate prediction and climate change projection. Key discussion themes will also include: clouds, circulation and climate sensitivity; the changing water cycle; the cryosphere in a warming world; ocean circulation and regional sea-level rise; prediction and attribution of extremes (from climate to weather); and regional climate variability and change (enabling climate services). The symposium is expected to: benefit climate-related risk management; facilitate the development of responsible and affordable climate change mitigation and adaptation options; and initiate a process for creating a joint action plan for planning and developing an international space-based climate observing system.

Asia Urban Futures Workshop

The US Agency for International Development (USAID), together with UN-HABITAT, the UN Development Programme (UNDP) and UN Global Pulse are co-hosting this workshop under the theme 'Shaping solutions to the challenges of tomorrow for Asia's cities'. Launch of the Decade of SE4ALL Americas and Regional Meeting

This three-day event, organized by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the Ministry of Energy of Chile, the UN and partners, will start on 15 October with the official launch of the UN Decade of Sustainable Energy for All in the Americas (SE4ALL AMERICAS). The launch will provide a platform for announcements and specific contributions in the energy sector, and create a declaration on the vision for SE4ALL for the next decade. Following the launch, on 16-17 October, a Regional Meeting and technical sessions within the SE4ALL framework will be held, which will: define and agree on actions for the SE4ALL AMERICAS; establish priority actions for the next 12 months; and identify ways to implement the proposed actions. Participants in the event will include representatives from the organizing entities, governments, multilateral agencies, civil society and private sector.

First Africa Regional Mountain Meeting (AMRF)

The Albertine Rift Conservation Society (ARCOS) and the Africa Mountain Partnership Champions Committee in partnership with the East African Community (EAC), the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), the Austrian Development Cooperation (ADC), and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) are organizing the 1st African Mountains Regional Forum (AMRF), under the theme 'Towards a Shared Mountain Agenda for Africa'. IPCC 40

The 40th session of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC 40) will be held to adopt the Fifth Assessment Review (AR5) Synthesis Report and approve its Summary for Policy Makers. ICAO Environmental ?Seminars in the APAC Region

As part of a series of two environmental seminars held back-to-back in each region of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the International Aviation and Environment Seminar will be held from 28-29 October 2014, and the States' Action Plans Seminar will be held from 29-30 October 2014, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, for the Asia and Pacific (APAC) Region. The seminars are supporting ICAO Member States in their efforts to institute climate-friendly aviation. The first seminar, intended for civil aviation, environment, energy, industry, civil society, academia, and National Action Plan (NAP) representatives, as well as the general public, will cover: aviation and environmental outlook, aircraft noise, local air quality, global emissions, sustainable alternative fuels, market-based measures, technology, operations, green airports, States' action plans, assistance to States and financing?. The second seminar is for NAP Focal Points to learn about ICAO Guidance on State Action Plans; the Action Plan Emissions Reduction (APER) website, supporting documents and ICAO tools; assistance for the implementation of the Action Plan; and States' best practices.

First Ministerial and Policy Conference on Sustainable Transport

This conference is part of the Africa Sustainable Transport Forum, a high-level platform for discussion and policy decision making. The Forum aims to integrate sustainable transport into Africa's development and planning processes and increase funding to sustainable transport programmes in Africa, with the broader aim of improving access to transport, reducing air pollution and climate emissions, and improving road safety and health. The Forum also aims to share experiences from demonstration and pilot projects and foster South-South exchanges. The Forum intends to hold Ministerial conferences bi-annually, with Sub-Regional conferences in the interim years. The Forum is a partnership among the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), the UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT) and the World Bank. UNEP hosts the Forum Secretariat.

CMS COP 11

Ecuador will host the eleventh meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 11) to the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) in November 2014, marking the first time that a CMS COP is held in Latin America. The decision was taken during the 41st Meeting of the Standing Committee, on 28 November 2013, in Bonn, Germany. The COP will be preceded by a High Level Ministerial meeting on 3 November. Another Standing Committee meeting will be held 9 November upon closure of the COP.

Fifth International Forum on Energy for Sustainable Development

The Fifth International Forum on Energy for Sustainable Development will emphasize accomplishing the three Sustainable Energy for All (SE4All) objectives through a regional agenda and sharing of experiences, namely universal access to modern energy services, doubling energy efficiency and doubling the share of renewable energy by 2030 globally. The Forum is organized by the Government of Tunisia and the UN Economic Commissions for Europe, Western Asia, Asia and the Pacific, Latin America and the Caribbean, and Africa. A high-level dialogue on 'International Cooperation towards Sustainable Energy for All' is expected to adopt a declaration reaffirming the roles of key stakeholders and calling for joining efforts to achieve the SE4All objectives. The forum will also include a workshop on energy efficiency investments and the launch of a new UN Development Account project on promoting renewable energy investments.

Social Pre-COP

The Social PreCOP will be held from 4-7 November 2014, ahead of UNFCCC COP 20. It will welcome civil society organizations from all over the world, including those attending the UNFCCC negotiations or involved in other UN processes, as well as organizations with no formal UN status. 2nd Technical Workshop on the Draft Revised Guidelines for the Technical Review of Annex I GHG Inventories

The second technical workshop on the draft revised guidelines for the technical review of greenhouse gas (GHG) inventories from Annex I Parties will take place in Bonn, Germany. The workshop is part of the work programme on the revision of the guidelines for the review of biennial reports (BRs) and national communications (NCs) for developed country parties. It will allow for further discussion on outstanding issues to advance the text of the revised UNFCCC Annex I inventory review guidelines. The workshop, open to all parties, will be organized by the UNFCCC Secretariat under the guidance of the Chair of the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA). International Conference on Solar Energy Technology in Development Cooperation

The Austrian Development Agency in cooperation with AEE-INTEC, BSW Solar and GIZ sponsors a two-day conference to explore issues related to providing sustainable energy to the two billion people in developing countries that do not have access to modern energy supplies, while curbing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and meeting growing energy demand. In particular, participants will share knowledge and experiences on projects, financing, and social, economic and political barriers associated with the diffusion of solar technologies. International Conference on Mountain People Adapting to Change

The International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) is organizing an international conference on 'Mountain People Adapting to Change: Solutions Beyond Boundaries Bridging Science, Policy, and Practice'. Noting that the rapid environmental change in the Hindu Kush Himalayas has outpaced adaptation techniques, the organizers aim to fill gaps in knowledge about local trends and global climate change and develop solutions that "look beyond political, sectoral and national boundaries". 3rd Global Soil Week

The 3rd Global Soil Week will provide a platform for discussions on issues related to soils and land, and facilitate the emergence of new initiatives and strengthen existing ones. The Week will be composed of workshops on topics that have emerged since the 1st Global Soil Week: carbon land management; soils and water; land rehabilitation; cities; land governance; economics of land and land degradation; land degradation neutral world (LDNW); soil and biomass for non-food purposes; and soils and food security. Expo 2017: Future Energy

The international Expo 2017 will take place in Astana, Kazakhstan, and will aim to promote the most appropriate and viable sustainability-driven action plans to address the possibilities of future energy. The Expo, organized under the theme 'Future Energy' and the sub-theme 'Solutions for Tackling Humankind's Greatest Challenge,' will address future energy from several perspectives, including: exploration of stategies, programmes and technologies for sustainable energy development; promotion of energy security and efficiency; and the encouragement of renewable energy use. Venues for the World's Fairs and their themes are determined by taking into account political, economic, geographical and cultural contexts. The history of World's Fairs extends back to “the Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of all Nations,” which took place in London in 1851.
