C20 Online Consultation on Climate and Sustainability
This online consultation aims to develop recommendations for the G20 on supporting long-term growth through the sustainable use of natural resources. The online consultation will focus its discussion on five key areas: climate change; climate finance; resource security; the EU and the US and the G20 agenda; and key civil society issues for the G20 around climate and sustainability. Abu Dhabi Ascent
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) will host the Abu Dhabi Ascent, a high-level meeting to generate momentum for the 23 September Climate Summit being convened by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. The two-day meeting will bring together ministers, as well as leaders from business, finance and civil society, to develop proposals for action and determine how their countries, businesses and organizations can increase their participation in initiatives that broaden and deepen partnerships, in order to deliver concrete action at the September Summit.

Forests Asia Conference: Sustainable Landscapes for Green Growth in ASEAN
This conference, organized by the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) as part of global celebration on the International Day of Forests, will discuss sustainable forest landscapes within the Association of Southeast Asian Nations' (ASEAN) post-2015 sustainable development efforts. Adaptation Futures 2014: Third International Climate Change Adaptation Conference
This meeting is co-hosted and convened by the Earth System Science Center of the National Institute for Space Studies (CCST-INPE) (Brazil), and by the UN Environment Programme's (UNEP's) Programme of Research on Climate Change Vulnerability, Impacts and Adaptation (PROVIA). Fourth Global Infrastructure Basel Summit 2014
The fourth GIB Summit will be held at the Congress Center Basel, Switzerland on 21-22 May 2014, and will focus on 'Mainstreaming Sustainability in Infrastructure Finance and Investment'. The 4th Global Infrastructure Basel Summit 2014 will begin with an interactive, participant-centred workshop titled 'Financing Infrastructure Projects in Cities – Avoiding Traps and Achieving Sustainability'. The session will use the case study discussion method to draw out key issues, best practices and useful tools for financing sustainable infrastructure. World Mountain Forum 2014

46th GEF Council Meeting and GEF Assembly
The Global Environment Facility (GEF) Assembly will be held back-to-back with the 46th GEF Council meeting in Mexico. A report on the host city, Cancún, was considered at the 45th Council meeting in November 2013. The CSO Consultation, GEF Council and LDCF/SCCF Council Meetings will convene from 25-27 May, with the Council meeting beginning on 25 May and overlapping for half a day, on 27 May, with the CSO Consultation. The Assembly will convene from 28-30 May. All 183 member nations, including South Sudan – the GEF's newest member – will gather for the Assembly. The GEF Council meets twice a year, while the Assembly meets every four years to take major decisions, including endorsement of the next four-year GEF replenishment package.

Fourth Session of the Regional Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction in the Americas
The Regional Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) in the Americas is a multi-stakeholder forum that brings together key DRR stakeholders throughout the Americas. It is a participative space for knowledge sharing that promotes the planning, monitoring and collective decision making and strategy, as well as actions to implement the Hyogo Framework for Action (HFA), all with linkages to international and national climate change adaptation efforts. The Fourth Session is co-organized by the UNISDR Regional Office for the Americas (UNISDR - Americas) and Ecuador's Secretariat of Risk Management and Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with support from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), UN Development Programme (UNDP) and participation planned by subregional DRR organizations. The Platform will feature a high level panel on mainstreaming DRR and climate change adaptation in public policies, as well as four thematic sessions on: risk reduction and special segments of society; DDR, climate change and the development agenda; governance and public policies on risk reduction; regional consultation surrounding the new framework for DDR post-2015 (HFA2).

MRV GHG Emissions Under Existing and Developing Carbon Pricing Mechanisms
The World Bank's Partnership for Market Readiness (PMR) and the Climate Knowledge and Innovation Community (Climate-KIC) of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) are hosting a conference titled 'Monitoring, Reporting and Verifying GHG Emissions under Existing and Developing Carbon Pricing Mechanisms'. Taking place between the Carbon Expo 2014 and the June meeting of the UNFCCC's Subsidiary Bodies, the event will present analysis of sub-national, national, and sector-based greenhouse gas (GHG) accounting frameworks. Questions to be addressed include: what are the costs associated with MRV requirements; are there incentives to reduce uncertainty; is there a trade-off between uncertainty and costs for reporting entities; and how can MRV procedures be improved. Presenters will also consider how to create a "credible, consistent and compatible MRV infrastructure across the world to support global mitigation action".

First Annual Sustainable Energy for All (SE4ALL) Forum
This high-level event will serve as the formal global launch of the UN Decade on Sustainable Energy for All, and as the first of regular yearly global platforms for launching new initiatives and projects in support of the UN Secretary-General's Sustainable Energy for All (SE4ALL) initiative, and reporting on the progress of the initiative. The first day will be dedicated to SE4ALL multi-stakeholder partnerships, and consist of parallel sessions of highlighting progress made and lessons learned by SE4ALL partners on: universalizing energy access; doubling the amount of renewables in the energy mix; and doubling the rate of progress on energy efficiency. The second day will include an SE4ALL Advisory Board Meeting and High-level Global Leaders Dialogue, while the third day High-Level Ministerial Dialogue on "Energy in the Post-2015 Development Agenda".

World Environment Day 2014
The UN General Assembly declared 2014 as the International Year of Small Island Developing States (SIDS). World Environment Day (WED) 2014 will be celebrated under the theme of SIDS, with the goal of raising awareness of their unique development challenges and successes regarding a range of environmental problems, including climate change, waste management, unsustainable consumption, degradation of natural resources, and extreme natural disasters. UNEP is also soliciting votes for the 2014 WED slogan through 5 March 2014. The winning slogan will be used to call on the global WED community to take action for islands.

2nd World Summit of Legislators
The 2nd World Summit of Legislators is expected to be the world's largest conference of parliamentarians, with over 500 participants representing legislative assemblies from all over the world in attendance. Parliamentarians at the three-day summit, which will take place at the Mexican Congress, are expected to agree to and ratify a resolution on climate, natural capital and forest legislation. This meeting follows the first World Summit of Legislators, which convened from 15-17 June 2012, in the Tiradentes Palace, the original seat of the Brazilian Congress. Since this first meeting, the Global Legislators Organisation (GLOBE) has established the GLOBE Climate Legislation Initiative (GCLI), the GLOBE Natural Capital Initiative (GNCI) and the GLOBE Forest Legislation Initiative (GFLI), all of which will report to the 2nd Summit, as well as provide national legislation examples put forward by GLOBE legislators. The GLOBE Natural Capital Initiative (GNCI) seeks to raise awareness on the benefits of ecosystem valuation and wealth accounting, in order to establish a political support-base for the introduction and long-term uptake of the natural capital approach. World Oceans Day
World Oceans Day is meant to raise global awareness on the benefits derived from the oceans and the current challenges facing oceans, such as illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing, habitat destruction, over-exploitation, marine pollution and ocean acidification, among others. The Day also provides an opportunity for reflection on our collective and individual duty to interact with oceans in a sustainable manner. The UN will celebrate World Oceans Day 2014 at an event on 9 June 2014 at UN Headquarters, New York, US. The winners of the Annual World Oceans Day Oceanic Photo competition will be recognized at the event. The Day also coincides with the first day of the 24th Meeting of the Meeting of Parties (MOP) to the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). Other celebrations for World Ocean Day 2014 will be marked globally and online.

2014 CIF Partnership Forum
The Climate Investment Funds (CIF) and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) are jointly convening the 2014 CIF Partnership Forum, hosting more than 400 participants from civil society, the private sector, governments, indigenous peoples and academia. A special pre-conference event on 22 June, 'Stakeholder Day,' will be dedicated to discussing progress and challenges in engaging key stakeholders in the CIF's activities. During the conference, panels will address a variety of topics including managing climate change programs and unlocking private finance from mini-grids to REDD+. The CIF is the world's largest group of funds for climate action, channeling $8 billion to low carbon and climate resilient development.

2014 Caux Dialogue on Land and Security
The 2014 Caux Dialogue on Land and Security will bring together representatives from government, business and civil society to explore the potential of sustainable land management as a driver of peace, development and climate change mitigation. The Dialogue aims to: deepen understanding of links between land degradation and human security; share lessons learned and best practices for sustainable land restoration; examine potential for investment in land restoration and peace-building as paths to food security; present training resources available on the ground; and build the trust needed for ‘land-peace' policies, effective collaboration and partnerships. World Weather Open Science Conference 2014
The World Weather Open Science Conference (WWOSC2014): The Weather: What's the Outlook, which is convening for the first time ever, will bring together the weather science and user communities under the overarching theme ‘Seamless Prediction of the Earth System: from minutes to months'. WWOSC2014 will examine the “frontiers of knowledge,” and outline new scientific goals and challenges. The Conference will feature special sessions on high-impact weather events, such as heatwaves, droughts, cold snaps and floods. The Conference's two streams – the Science Program and the User, Application and Social Science Program – will meet in joint plenary and special sessions. The Science Program will cover basic weather research, as well research needed to establish prediction systems and assess the impacts of weather and climate events. The User Program will consider challenges and opportunities associated with communicating and employing weather information, science and services that reap social and economic benefits. 3rd UNITAR-Yale Conference on Environmental Governance and Democracy
The Third UN Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR)-Yale Conference on Environmental Governance and Democracy will meet under the theme of 'Human Rights, Environmental Sustainability, Post-2015 Development, and the Future Climate Regime'. It will bring together more than 150 scholars and policy experts to discuss state-of-the-art knowledge regarding themes that are at the nexus of human rights and the environment, including: whether constitutional environmental rights are a driver for environmental policy-making; human rights and environmental justice cases from countries and the field; why and how procedural environmental rights matter; human rights, environment and corporate responsibility; and effective participation of civil society and vulnerable groups. The outcomes and conclusions are expected to contribute to: discussions on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and a post-2015 development agenda; negotiations of a future climate change regime; the 2014 World Conference on Indigenous Peoples; and the 2015 report of the UN Independent Expert on Human Rights and the Environment (UNIEHRE). 37th WEDC International Conference
The 37th Water, Engineering and Development Centre (WEDC) International Conference will take place under the theme, ‘Sustainable Water and Sanitation Services for All in a Fast Changing World'. The conference will provide a platform for debate, exchange and reflection on Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH). The conference will include three days of presentations and discussions on peer-reviewed papers, followed by two days of capacity development, which will include field visits. Side events throughout the week will showcase best practices. The seventh meeting of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) Conference of the Parties serving as Meeting of the Parties (MOP) to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety is scheduled for 29 September-3 October 2014. Among other issues, the meeting is expected to address: handling, transport, packaging and identification (HTPI) of living modified organisms (LMOs); risk assessment and risk management; and socio-economic considerations.

Climate Symposium 2014
Climate Symposium 2014 is sponsored by the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT), the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP), the European Commission, the European Space Agency (ESA), and the city of Darmstadt. The symposium will: be an important step towards further developing an efficient and sustained international space-based Earth observing system; bring together international experts in climate observations, research, analysis and modeling; and emphasize the role of space-based Earth observations in improving knowledge of the climate at global and regional scales, and in assessing models used for climate projections. The symposium is organized around the theme 'Enhanced Understanding of Climate Processes through Earth Observation'. Participants will discuss the proposed Architecture for Sustained Climate Monitoring from Space, and consider how Earth observation contributes to future developments in climate prediction and climate change projection. Key discussion themes will also include: clouds, circulation and climate sensitivity; the changing water cycle; the cryosphere in a warming world; ocean circulation and regional sea-level rise; prediction and attribution of extremes (from climate to weather); and regional climate variability and change (enabling climate services). The symposium is expected to: benefit climate-related risk management; facilitate the development of responsible and affordable climate change mitigation and adaptation options; and initiate a process for creating a joint action plan for planning and developing an international space-based climate observing system.

CMS COP 11
Ecuador will host the eleventh meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 11) to the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) in November 2014, marking the first time that a CMS COP is held in Latin America. The decision was taken during the 41st Meeting of the Standing Committee, on 28 November 2013, in Bonn, Germany. The 42nd Meeting of the Standing Committee will take place 2-3 November and regional coordination meetings 3 November.
