The Third Meeting of the Sixth Replenishment of the Global Environment Facility (GEF-6) is scheduled to take place in December 2013. Workshop on Capacity Building for Sustainable Waste Management in Asia-Pacific
This workshop on Capacity Building for Sustainable Waste Management in the Asia-Pacific Region to Promote the Eco-Town Model and Integrated Solid Waste Management (ISWM) is organized by the UN Environment Programme's (UNEP) International Environmental Technology Centre (IETC), the UN Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) and the Jeju, Republic of Korea affiliate of its International Training Centre for Local Actors (CIFAL) network, and the Global Environment Centre Foundation (GEC). The workshop seeks to help Asia-Pacific high-level authorities, NGOs and other local actors understand and apply UNITAR's CityShare methodology and UNEP IETC's integrated solid waste management (ISWM) and Eco-town methodologies to develop ISWM plans to transform cities into "eco-towns." UNEP IETC defines "eco-towns" as those that "close the loop" as locally as possible and reduce their environmental footprint, and in the particular case of waste, reduce final waste quantities.

First meeting of the Expert Working Group on ESM
The 25-member expert working group on the environmentally sound management (ESM) is expected to further elaborate and implement actions on initial short-term work items on the ESM of waste, and to develop a work programme for additional priorities and key work items and actions for the implementation of ESM. The group will report on its activities and submit its work programme to the Basel Convention Open-ended Working Group for consideration at its ninth meeting, and subsequently to the Conference of the Parties (COP) for consideration and possible adoption at its 12th meeting.

Global Ocean Action Summit [rescheduled]
The Global Ocean Action Summit, organized by the Government of the Netherlands and the World Bank, is meant to "seal major deals for worldwide action" addressing the threats to the health and productivity of oceans. The meeting aims to mobilize financial and technical support for attaining established goals under the Global Partnership for Oceans (GPO). It will also host the first official assembly of GPO partners, and will mark the implementation phase of the GPO. In addition, a report indicating priority areas and regions for action will be launched by the GPO Blue Ribbon Panel, an independent group of ocean experts. Attendance is by invitation only. The Summit was originally scheduled to take place in September 2013, but has been postponed until early 2014.

Seventh Meeting of the Open Working Group on SDGs (OWG 7)
The seventh session of the UN General Assembly's (UNGA) Open Working Group (OWG) on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) will take place from 6-10 January 2014, in New York, US. “Pardon the E-Waste Interruption” Forum

Pilot Training Session on Chairing Meetings of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions
Organized by the Secretariat of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions, in cooperation with the Institute of Advanced Studies of the UN University and funded by the Government of Switzerland, this training course aims to expand the number and diversity of trained, confident and willing chairs for the various meetings of the conventions. The training is expected to address practical and procedural issues encountered by chairs of international meetings, encompassing preparations for chairing, rules of procedure, administrative matters related to the operation of various meetings under the three conventions, as well as communication techniques and skills.

46th GEF Council Meeting and GEF Assembly
The Global Environment Facility (GEF) Assembly will be held back-to-back with the 46th GEF Council meeting in Mexico. A report on the host city, Cancún, was considered at the 45th Council meeting in November 2013. The CSO Consultation, GEF Council and LDCF/SCCF Council Meetings will convene from 25-27 May, with the Council meeting beginning on 25 May and overlapping for half a day, on 27 May, with the CSO Consultation. The Assembly will convene from 28-30 May. All 183 member nations, including South Sudan – the GEF's newest member – will gather for the Assembly. The GEF Council meets twice a year, while the Assembly meets every four years to take major decisions, including endorsement of the next four-year GEF replenishment package.

31st Session of the FAO Committee on Fisheries (COFI 31)
This session will be held in June 2014. Based on its terms of reference, COFI: reviews the work programmes of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in the field of fisheries, and their implementation; conducts periodic general reviews of international fishery problems and examine possible solutions through national, FAO and intergovernmental programmes; reviews specific matters relating to fisheries referred to the Committee by the Council or the Director-General, or placed by the Committee on its Agenda at the request of Member Nations in accordance with the rules of procedure of the Committee, and to make recommendations as may be appropriate; considers the desirability of preparing and submitting to Member Nations an international convention under Article XIV of the Constitution to ensure effective international cooperation and consultation in fisheries on a world scale; and reports to the Council or tender advice to the Director-General, as appropriate, on matters considered by the Committee.

Tenth Meeting of the Rotterdam Convention Chemical Review Committee (CRC10)
