Second Session of the Team of Technical and Legal Experts on ABS (TTLE ABS-2) of the CGRFA

At its second session, the Team of Technical and Legal Experts on Access and Benefit-sharing (ABS) of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (CGRFA) will continue work on draft elements to facilitate the domestic implementation of ABS for different sub-sectors of genetic resources for food and agriculture.

Caribbean Sub-regional Capacity-Building Workshop on Biosafety

Organized by the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the goal of this workshop is to enhance the capacity of Parties in the Caribbean subregion to advance the implementation of the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety and its Nagoya – Kuala Lumpur Supplementary Protocol on Liability and Redress through effective integration of biosafety into National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plans (NBSAPs) and national development plans in line with the Strategic Plan for the Protocol and the relevant Aichi Biodiversity Targets. It also aims to increase the capacity of Parties to identify and mobilize sufficient and predictable resources for the implementation of the Protocol and facilitate public awareness, education and participation concerning the safe transfer, handling and use of living modified organisms (LMOs).

Arctic Biodiversity Congress

Organized by the Arctic Council's Conservation of Arctic Flora and Fauna (CAFF) working group, this event will promote the conservation and sustainable use of Arctic biodiversity through dialogue among scientists, policy-makers, government officials, industry, civil society and indigenous peoples. It is closely linked to the findings and recommendations of the first Arctic Biodiversity Assessment (ABA) released in May 2013.

CBD Expert Workshop to Prepare Practical Guidance on Preventing and Mitigating the Significant Adverse Impacts of Marine Debris on Marine and Coastal Biodiversity and Habitats

Global Soil Biodiversity Conference

The first Global Soil Biodiversity Conference will be organized by the Global Soil Biodiversity Initiative (GSBI) and EcoFINDERS, from 2-5 December in Dijon, France. Held under the theme 'Assessing Soil Biodiversity and Its Role for Ecosystem Services,' this first GSBI conference will summarize the current state of knowledge and recent achievements in the science of soil biodiversity. The goals of the conference will be to promote scientific research on the role of soil biodiversity for ecosystem functions and services, and integrate such understanding into environmental agendas, sustainable policies and land management decisions globally. Topics to be addressed include: discovery and observation; tracking and monitoring; assessing pressures and threats; strategies for management and conversation; soil ecology education; and global harmonization of methods for structural and functional diversity of soil organisms.

1st Specialist Conference on Municipal Water Management and Sanitation in Developing Countries

This conference aims to develop an integrated perspective on sanitation solutions in Asia, based on the concept “from toilet to source,” which includes consideration of storm-water, sludge and solid waste management issues. The International Water Association (IWA) and the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) are organizing the conference in collaboration with the Japan Sanitation Consortium, the Wastewater Management Authority (Thailand), and the Faculty of Engineering, Prince of Songkhla University, Thailand. The event also marks the 50th anniversary of the postgraduate study programme in Environmental Engineering and Management at AIT.

WIPO Workshop for Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities on Intellectual Property and Traditional Knowledge

Organized by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), this workshop will include about 14 participants from each of the seven geo-cultural regions recognized by the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues. It aims to: impart basic knowledge of the main principles of the intellectual property system from a traditional knowledge perspective; explain the negotiations taking place in the WIPO Intergovernmental Committee on Intellectual Property and Genetic Resources, Traditional Knowledge and Folklore (IGC); and raise awareness of the available intellectual property tools and WIPO materials that are relevant to the protection of traditional knowledge.

GeoPower Global Congress 2014

Organized for the sixth time, the GeoPower Global Congress 2014 will provide a venue for sharing experiences and best practices for optimizing the delivery of geothermal power and heat projects across the world. The scope of the Congress will cover strategies and technologies utilized across the development life cycle, including start-up, exploration, resource development, plant design and construction, and operations and maintenance. In addition to presentations, the Congress will include an exhibition and a 'Turkey Focus Session' on 3 December. The GeoPower Global Congress is supported by the European Geothermal Energy Council (EGEC), and targets project developers and operators, investors, government representatives and technical consultancies, among other industry players.

Workshop on Supporting Small- and Large-Scale Deployment of Renewables through Electricity Storage

Organized by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), this workshop will focus on the role of electricity storage in strengthening renewables-based mini-grids for rural electrification, and integrating utility-scale solar photovoltaic (PV) and wind power parks into the grid. The workshop will also explore best practices and lessons to be highlighted in IRENA's forthcoming technology roadmap for electricity storage publication. The workshop will convene a maximum of 30 participants, who will also be granted complimentary access to the '2nd International Conference and Exhibition on Energy Storage and Microgrids in India,' taking place from 4-5 December in New Delhi, India. The event is the third in a series of workshops on electricity storage, with previous workshops, focusing on policy and regulation, and self-consumption, taking place on 27 March in Düsseldorf, Germany, and 7 November in Tokyo, Japan, respectively.

Training Webinar on ASEAN Renewable Energy Guidelines

The Clean Energy Solutions Center, an initiative of the Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM), is hosting a webinar to train renewable energy project developers and potential investors on the use of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Renewable Energy guidelines. The online guidelines, which are updated regularly, aim to increase transparency in renewable energy project implementation and to facilitate increased investment and private sector activity in renewable energy in the ASEAN region. The webinar is being hosted in partnership with ASEAN's Renewable Energy Support Program.

2015 International Year of Soils Launch

The 68th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) declared 2015 as the International Year of Soils (IYS). The IYS will be formally launched in an event organized during the 69th session of the UNGA, on 5 December 2014, in New York, US. Concurrent launch events will be held at the headquarters of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) in Rome, Italy, as well as in Bangkok, Thailand, and elsewhere in the world. The launch date coincides with the World Soil Day (WSD). The IYS 2015 will promote awareness and understanding of the importance of soil for food security and essential ecosystem functions.

World Soil Day 2014

The FAO Conference, in June 2013, unanimously endorsed World Soil Day and requested official adoption at the 68th UN General Assembly. In December 2013, the 68th UN General Assembly declared the 5th of December as World Soil Day. World Soil Day 2014 will focus on the theme 'Soils, foundation for family farming'.

Global Landscapes Forum

The second Global Landscapes Forum (GLF) will be convened at the margins of the 20th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UNFCCC by the CIGAR Consortium's Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR), the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Government of Peru. The Forum will focus on integrating the landscape approach into the post-2015 climate and development agendas. Themes will include food, water and energy; climate change; the green economy; and sustainable development. The programme will include a wide variety of sessions covering topics such as REDD+, climate-smart agriculture, fiscal and trade policy instruments, land restoration and forest economics. The event will also feature a debate on the future of food security in a changing climate.

12th Development and Climate Days

The 12th Development and Climate Days will be held on the sidelines of the 20th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 20) to the UNFCCC. The slogan of the event, 'Zero poverty. Zero emissions. Within a generation' draws attention to the need for climate change mitigation, adaptation and increased resilience in order to eradicate poverty. The programme for the conference includes a series of sessions directed toward integrating climate and poverty reduction targets. Representatives from the intergovernmental, public, private, non-profit and media sectors will elaborate on the 'zero-zero' vision, pitch ideas for achieving these goals, discuss potential financing pathways, consider radical adaptation measures, and lead games on trade-offs and spurring political change. This annual event is jointly organized by the Red Cross Red Crescent Climate Centre, the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED), the Overseas Development Institute (ODI) and the Climate and Development Knowledge Network (CDKN).

2014 Climate and Health Summit

Organized in parallel with the 20th session of the UNFCCC Conference of the Parties (COP 20), the third annual Climate and Health Summit will raise awareness about climate change's negative effects on health and mitigation's potential to create a "cleaner, healthier and more equitable world". The Summit aims to ensure health considerations are included in negotiations toward a 2015 agreement on climate change. The Global Climate and Health Alliance, organizer of the Summit, hopes to galvanize the international health community in advance of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) and COP 21 in 2015. The Summit will exhibit climate change best practices that improve public health. The event will bring together government ministers from health, development, energy and environment departments, other policy makers, technical experts, academics, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and civil society, medical and health professionals, local health and environment authorities, UN staff and youth.

Law, Governance and Climate Change: An International Law and Policy Workshop

In parallel to the 20th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 20) to the UNFCCC, the Centre for International Sustainable Development Law (CISDL) is organizing a workshop to consider how international law and governance can better respond to climate change, what universal human rights can contribute to legal responses to climate change, how climate laws could promote respect for human rights, and how innovative legal instruments can deliver more sustainable landscapes and energy. Sessions will be organized around themes such as: international human rights; economic and environmental law; sustainable development; and designing new collaborative research agendas on law, governance and climate change. During the workshop, a new legal working papers series on public participation and climate change and a series of legal briefs on sustainable development of biofuels and renewable energy will be launched. Third Forest Legislation Summit

The Global Legislators Organisation (GLOBE International) is organizing the Third Forest Legislation Summit on the sidelines of the 20th session of the UNFCCC Conference of the Parties (COP 20). Legislators from over 20 countries are expected to participate in the Summit, which will feature side events on climate legislation, natural capital and the progress achieved in 2014. In conjunction with the Summit, GLOBE is convening ministerial meetings with key countries for legislators.

Transport Day 2014

The Partnership on Sustainable Low Carbon Transport (SLoCaT) and the Bridging the Gap Initiative (BtG) are organizing Transport Day 2014 during the 20th session of the UNFCCC Conference of the Parties (COP 20). The event is organized around the theme 'Transport Tackles Climate Change @ Transport Day 2014' and will feature a series break-out and plenary sessions aiming to raise the profile of the transport sector's climate change mitigation potential. Transport Day will aim to encourage the integration of transport into mitigation and adaptation policy making under the UNFCCC, ensure such and tools and resources as Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions (NAMAs), the Green Climate Fund (GCF), measurement, reporting and verification (MRV) systems, and technology transfer are appropriate for the transport sector.

South-South Cooperation on Climate Change Forum

The South-South Cooperation on Climate Change Forum is co-sponsored by the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) of China, the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), and the UN Development Programme (UNDP), with support from the Swiss Agency for Cooperation and Development (SDC), WWF-China, UNEP-Tongji-IESD, the UNFCCC Secretariat, and the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The Forum, which will take place in the interval of the 20th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 20) to the UNFCCC, aims to contribute to a successful post-2015 climate agreement by promoting South-South Cooperation as an integral part of global action against climate change. It provides an opportunity for participants to engage in the ongoing climate talks and provide recommendations on a number innovative actions, policy setting, financing and institutional development to enable rapid scaling-up of South-South Cooperation initiatives. The Forum will bring together ten ministers from Africa, Asia-Pacific, and Latin America and Caribbean, representatives from UN agencies, UNEP, UNDP, UNFCCC, the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), the Global Environment Facility (GEF), the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), development agencies, and international organizations, leaders of science and business communities, and practitioners from around the world.

IGA Workshop: Globally Consistent Classification for Geothermal Energy Resources

The aim of this workshop, organized by the International Geothermal Association (IGA), will be to find expert volunteers to develop specifications for classifying geothermal resources. IGA and the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) have agreed to develop technology-specific rules to apply the UN Framework for Fossil Energy and Mineral Reserves and Resources 2009 (UNFC-2009) to geothermal resources. IGA is seeking individuals to form a working group to draft these specifications, with targeted participants including volunteers from governments, international organizations, industry, investors, professional societies, the academia and other stakeholders engaged in activities related to the classification and reporting of geothermal resources. The workshop is supported by the Energy Sector Management Assistance Program (ESMAP) of the World Bank, and will be held at the IRENA Office in Bonn, Germany.

Second Meeting of the ITPGR Working Group to Enhance the Functioning of the MLS

Organized by the Secretariat of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGR), the Ad Hoc Open-ended Working Group to Enhance the Functioning of the Multilateral System (MLS) of Access and Benefit-sharing will continue considering measures to increase user-based payments and contributions to the Benefit-sharing Fund, and additional measures to enhance the functioning of the MLS. Regional Aquaculture Conference 2014

The Regional Aquaculture Conference 2014 will take place on the theme, ‘Blue Growth in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea: developing sustainable aquaculture for food security'. The conference aims to promote socioeconomic growth and food security in the Mediterranean and Black Sea from a blue growth perspective. Expert panels will convene on: enabling good governance in aquaculture; a healthy environment, a stronger aquaculture industry; boosting markets for aquaculture; and advancing aquaculture innovations. Participants will have the opportunity to share experiences and challenges, explore synergies and possibilities for joint action and mobilize political commitment towards a common aquaculture strategy for the region based on a blue growth approach. The Italian Presidency of the Council of the European Union (EU) is organizing the conference with the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) in cooperation with the European Commission (EC).

Substantive Informal Session for Third FfD Conference

This substantive informal session of the preparatory process for the third International Conference on Financing for Development (FfD) will address 'Enabling environment, systemic issues, follow-up process and learning from partnerships'. UN Member States will discuss: the enabling and conducive policy environment; trade, technology and capacity building and other non-financial means of implementation; governance; learning from partnerships; and the follow-up process. Background notes with further details of the sessions will be provided ahead of the session.

International Mountain Day 2014

Organized under the theme 'Mountain Farming,' the 2014 International Mountain Day will focus on highlighting the rapid transformation of family farming in mountain regions driven by population growth and economic globalization, among other factors. The Day is meant to provide opportunities to: raise awareness on the importance of mountains to life; highlight opportunities and constraints in mountain development; and build partnerships for positive change in mountains and highlands, globally. Coordinated by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), the Day will also constitute one of the concluding events of the 2014 International Year of Family Farming and link to relevant FAO publications and programmes.

The Ad Hoc Expert Group to the UN Forum on Forests (UNFF) will hold its second meeting (AHEG2) in order to review the International Arrangement on Forests (IAF). 2015 Zaragoza Conference

The UN-Water International Zaragoza Conference in January 2015 will consider the theme "Water and Sustainable Development" and will focus on how to bring the post-2015 international agenda on water and sanitation into action. More than 300 participants from UN agencies and programmes, experts, representatives of the business community, governmental and non-governmental organizations will participate in the 15-17 January 2015 event in Zaragoza, Spain, to draw conclusions based on existing practice and the exchange of views between governments and stakeholders. This event will take place during the final year of the International Decade for Action 'Water for Life,' and participants will contribute to efforts to take stock of and learn from achievements as well as planning the next steps. Ninth Ad Hoc Open-ended Informal Working Group to Study Issues Relating to the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Marine BBNJ

This meeting of the Ad Hoc Open-ended Informal Working Group to study issues relating to the conservation and sustainable use of marine biological diversity beyond areas of national jurisdiction (BBNJ) is the third of three meetings (April 2014, June 2014 and January 2015) that the UN General Assembly (UNGA) requested be convened. The meetings aim to make recommendations to the UNGA on the scope, parameters and feasibility of an international instrument under the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). First Drafting Session on Outcome Document of Third Conference on FfD

The Third International Conference on Financing for Development (FfD) will take place in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on 13-16 July 2015. According to UN General Assembly Resolution 68/279, the first draft of the outcome document will be prepared by the co-facilitators on the basis of informal consultations, taking into account inputs from Member States, and presented by February 2015. The Preparatory Process as outlined in the road map issued by the co-facilitators in October 2014 will include three drafting sessions on the outcome document. First India Renewable Energy Global Investment Promotion Meet and Expo

The First Renewable Energy Global Investment Promotion Meet and Expo (RE-INVEST) in New Delhi, India, will provide a platform for the global investment community to connect with stakeholders in India. Workshop on Linking Global and Regional Levels in the Management of Marine ABNJ

This workshop aims to foster a dialogue on enhancing ecosystem approaches to the management of areas beyond national jurisdiction (ABNJ) through global, regional and national processes. The workshop is expected to result in a synthesis on the current state of knowledge on global and regional processes that can be used to improve sustainable use of fisheries resources and biodiversity conservation in ABNJ, and address areas of uncertainty as a result of a weak knowledge base on fisheries and biodiversity. Participants will assess knowledge; global, regional and national efforts; and available capacity on fisheries and biodiversity conservation in ABNJ, with the aim of identifying gaps and capacity needs. The workshop will also share lessons learned and emerging trends in development, management and research on ABNJ from around the world and establish cross-sectoral linkages for improved information sharing on ABNJ. The Sustainable Ocean Initiative (SOI) Capacity-Building Workshop will focus on sharing and learning from regional experiences on integrated marine and coastal area management, with the aim of holistically achieving the Aichi Biodiversity Targets 6 and 11. Participants will also discuss scientific and technical tools to support the Aichi Biodiversity Targets, including the description of ecologically or biologically significant marine areas (EBSAs). The SOI is a global platform to enhance capacity and build partnerships to achieve the Aichi Biodiversity Targets related to marine and coastal biodiversity. The Secretariat of the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the Ministry of Environment of Peru and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) are convening the meeting. Beyond Enforcement: Communities, Governance, Incentives and Sustainable Use in Combating Illegal Wildlife Trade

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Sustainable Use and Livelihoods Specialist Group (SULi), the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED), the Austrian Ministry for the Environment, the ARC Centre of Excellence for Environmental Decisions (CEED) and TRAFFIC are holding a symposium to explore the roles of communities, governance, incentives and sustainable use in combating illegal wildlife trade. This symposium seeks to evaluate whether and under what circumstances community-based interventions are likely to achieve success in combating current patterns of illegal use and trade of wildlife (both plants and animals), and provide examples, lessons learnt and guidance in order to support governments, institutions and organizations in meeting relevant international commitments. Outputs of the meeting will be presented at the inter-governmental Conference on Illegal Wildlife Trade in Kasane, Botswana, in March 2015.

CBD Regional Workshop to Facilitate the Description of EBSAs in the North-East Indian Ocean Region

This Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) workshop is part of a series of regional workshops the Secretariat is organizing to facilitate the description of Ecologically or Biologically Significant Marine Areas (EBSAs) through the application of the scientific criteria in decision IX/20, annex I as well as scientific guidance on the identification of marine areas beyond national jurisdiction (ABNJ). The workshop will bring together scientific and technical experts to analyze biological and ecological data and information on marine ecosystems, habitats and species, and geological, physical or oceanographic data. Participants are expected to produce a regional workshop report on areas meeting EBSA criteria for consideration by the CBD's Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA). A Training Session on EBSAs will precede the workshop on 22 March 2015.

Dresden Nexus Conference 2015

The Dresden Nexus Conference (DNC) 2015 will convene under the theme 'Global Change, Sustainable Development Goals and the Nexus Approach,' and include participants from UN organizations, UN University (UNU) institutes, governments, international organizations, as well as individual researchers and representatives of non-governmental organizations (NGOs). Focusing on the contributions of a nexus approach to the management of water, soil and waste, the DNC 2015 will address the following issues: maintaining and enhancing environmental resources under global change; facilitating efficient and sustainable use of limited natural resources; engaging international development partners in the promotion of the nexus approach; and facilitating a transition to a green economy, especially with regard to agriculture. The DNC 2015 is organized by the UNU Institute for Integrated Management of Material Fluxes and of Resources (UNU-FLORES) as a follow-up to its workshop 'Advancing a Nexus Approach to the Sustainable Management of Water, Soil and Waste,' held from 11-12 November 2013 in Dresden, Germany.

Second Drafting Session on Outcome Document of Third Conference on FfD

The Third International Conference on Financing for Development (FfD) will take place in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on 13-16 July 2015. According to UN General Assembly Resolution 68/279, the first draft of the outcome document will be prepared by the co-facilitators on the basis of informal consultations, taking into account inputs from Member States, and presented by February 2015. The Preparatory Process as outlined in the road map issued by the co-facilitators in October 2014 will include three drafting sessions on the outcome document. The second drafting session will take place on 13-17 April 2015.

3rd Global Soil Week

The 3rd Global Soil Week will provide a platform for discussions on issues related to soils and land, and facilitate the emergence of new initiatives and strengthen existing ones. The Week will be composed of workshops on topics that have emerged since the 1st Global Soil Week: carbon land management; soils and water; land rehabilitation; cities; land governance; economics of land and land degradation; land degradation neutral world (LDNW); soil and biomass for non-food purposes; and soils and food security. In addition, the agenda will include dialogues organized by various stakeholders, and lunch break dialogues with presentations on activities, ideas, research and experiences relating to soils and land. 14th Session of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (PFII 14)

The Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (PFII) will follow up on the outcome of the World Conference on Indigenous Peoples (WCIP) and discuss the post-2015 development agenda. The 14th session will include discussions on youth self-harm and suicide, indigenous issues in the Pacific region, and the possibility of an optional protocol to the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP). 2015 Arctic Council Ministerial Meeting

This Arctic Council Ministerial Meeting will bring together ministers of the Arctic States and high-level representatives of the indigenous Permanent Participant organizations to set the Council's objectives for the next two years. The 2015 Ministerial Meeting will mark the conclusion of Canada's and the beginning of the United States' chairmanship, which will last from 2015-2017. The April 2015 meeting will be preceded by an event in Ottawa, Canada, on 23 April 2015 to showcase the Council's accomplishments during Canada's chairmanship.

2015 Global Land Forum

The 2015 Global Land Forum will take place under the theme 'Land governance for inclusive development, justice and sustainability: time for action'. The event will bring together practitioners, land users, activists, policy makers and researchers from around the world. Participants will debate, share and plan joint action on people-centered land governance, with the aim of contributing to broader goals of poverty reduction, food security, environmental sustainability and human well-being and dignity, including within the context of the post-2015 development framework. The first day of the Forum will be dedicated to ‘Africa Day,' with a spotlight on land governance in Senegal and the Africa region. The second and third days will discuss issues from a global perspective. The fourth day includes a field trip, which will be followed by an Assembly on the fifth day. The event will include plenary sessions, workshops and a Marketplace of Ideas. World Hydropower Congress 2015

Hosted by the International Hydropower Association (IHA), the 2015 World Hydropower Congress will take place in Beijing, China. The congress will focus on discussing and debating strategies for the hydropower sector over the next 35 years, and examining how sustainably developed hydropower can address climate change, and energy and water security. Desertland II

Desertland, the Conference on Desertification and Land Degradation, will bring together academics, civil society, governments, scientists and other stakeholders to discuss challenges related to desertification and land degradation and develop appropriate solutions. The conference will consider management strategies for areas affected by drought and land degradation. Participants will focus on seven topics: land management and land degradation; water harvesting and water saving techniques in drylands; acidity and drought; soil hydrology; sediment transport and overland flow; GIS applications in wetlands and drylands; and soil and water management. Day one will address ‘Water Security: Responses to local, regional and global challenges.' The second day, which takes place on the World Day to Combat Desertification, will focus on the theme ‘Preventing and Combatting Land Degradation in Drylands'. The University of Ghent and the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) are organizing the conference.

Third High-level Political Forum

The Third High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF 3), which will take place under the auspices of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), will focus on the theme, 'Strengthening integration, implementation and review - the HLPF after 2015'. The HLPF is mandated to meet every year under the auspices of ECOSOC and every four years at the level of Heads of State and Government under the auspices of the UN General Assembly (UNGA). Our Common Future Under Climate Change

Organized by the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), International Council for Science (ICSU) and Future Earth, in collaboration with a partnership of French organizations, this science-focused conference will examine the latest research around climate change. Participants will discuss the findings of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and any new research since the IPCC's Fifth Assessment Report (AR5). The event will touch upon the following themes: state of knowledge on climate change; scenarios exploring our common future; responding to climate change challenges; and collective action and transformative solutions. The Chair of the conference is Chris Field, Co-Chair of Working Group II of the IPCC.

Second Meeting of the UN Environment Assembly

The UN Environment Assembly (UNEA) will convene for the second time in 2016. The UNEA of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) represents the highest level of governance of international environmental affairs in the UN system. The Rio+20 conference agreed in June 2012 to strengthen and upgrade UNEP through measures including universal membership of its Governing Council and ensuring the active participation of all relevant stakeholders. In March 2013, the 67th session of the UN General Assembly changed the designation of the Governing Council of UNEP to become UNEA, reflecting the intention to elevate its status.

Expo 2017: Future Energy

The international Expo 2017 will take place in Astana, Kazakhstan, and will aim to promote the most appropriate and viable sustainability-driven action plans to address the possibilities of future energy. The Expo, organized under the theme 'Future Energy' and the sub-theme 'Solutions for Tackling Humankind's Greatest Challenge,' will address future energy from several perspectives, including: exploration of stategies, programmes and technologies for sustainable energy development; promotion of energy security and efficiency; and the encouragement of renewable energy use. Venues for the World's Fairs and their themes are determined by taking into account political, economic, geographical and cultural contexts. The history of World's Fairs extends back to “the Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of all Nations,” which took place in London in 1851.

The Great Apes Survival Partnership (GRASP) will gather over 800 of the world's leading primate experts, scientists and researchers at the XXVII International Primatological Society (IPS) Congress. GRASP's bid to host the meeting was built upon the theme, 'Global Connectivity to Ensure the Future of Primates,' and proposes to include Nairobi-based UN experts in areas such as climate change, deforestation, sustainable development, and civil conflict, among others, in IPS symposia, workshops and panels. The event will convene during 2018. The XXVI IPS Congress is scheduled to convene from 21-27 August 2016, in Chicago, Illinois, US.
