69th Session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA 69)

The 69th Session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA 69) will convene at UN Headquarters on Tuesday, 16 September 2014. The General Debate will open on Wednesday, 24 September 2014. The debate's opening was postponed from Tuesday, 23 September 2014, to accommodate the Climate Summit (resolution A/RES/57/301 and decision 68/512).

Joint FAO/WHO Meeting on Pesticide Residues (JMPR)

The Joint Meeting on Pesticide Residues (JMPR) is an expert ad hoc body administered jointly by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO), which harmonizes the requirement and the risk assessment on the pesticide residues. The Committee invites submissions of information on substances that will be evaluated at future meetings as described in its requests for data. The list of substances to be evaluated is based on recommendations of the Codex Committee on Pesticide Residues (CCPR), previous Expert Meetings, and direct requests from governments, other interested organizations, and producers of substances that have been evaluated previously.

European PV Solar Energy Conference 2014

The European PV Solar Energy Conference (EU PVSEC 2014) will address the latest global scientific, technological and market-related trends of solar PV. In addition to technical presentations, the conference will discuss PV applications in buildings and the smart grid, as well as policy and business applications for PV as a major electricity source. The event will preceede and overlap with the EU PVSEC Exhibition, being held from 23-25 September 2014.

Green Standards Week

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) is organizing Green Standards Week under the theme, 'Setting the Vision for Smart Sustainable Cities'. The Week will feature a high-level forum on the main theme and forums on related themes, including: 'Green Information and Communications Technology (ICT) for a Sustainable Resource Efficient Economy;' 'E-waste: The Inconvenient Truth;' and 'Using electromagnetic fields (EMF) to Achieve the Smartest Sustainable City'. The last day of the event will be dedicated to the regional meeting of 'ITU-T Study Group 5 Regional Group for Asia and the Pacific' (SG5 RG-AP). Overall, the Week will aim to promote: green ICTs as a catalyst to sustainable development; e-waste management; and how ICTs can help build smart, sustainable cities. The Week is expected to attract specialists from a variety of international organizations, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and the private sector, policy-makers, engineers, designers, city planners, government officials, regulators and standards experts. ITU is the UN's ICT agency and coordinates international cooperation on radio spectrum, satellite orbits, communication infrastructure development and standards.

26th Conference of the Danubian Countries on Hydrological Forecasting and Hydrological Bases of Water Management

The 26th Danube Conference, part of a series of biennial conferences hosted alternately by the countries of the river Danube, is being hosted by Germany, in Deggendorf. The Conference aims to share methodologies and case studies on hydrological basic information, hydrological forecasting and parameters, disaster management, the role of hydrological and biotic processes in aquatic systems, and linking different fields of science. Conference topics include: basis of hydrology; hydrological data management; hydrological modeling and forecasting; disaster events; administrative structures for water management; river basin and water management; and ecohydrology. The Conference is co-organized by: the German National Committee for the International Hydrological Programme (IHP) of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), and of the Hydrology and Water Resources Programme (HWRP) of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO); the Bavarian Environment Agency; and the Deggendorf Institute of Technology.

Global Consultation on Communication for Development, Community Media and ICTs for Family Farming and Rural Development

To help propel family farmers' voices forward, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) and the World Association of Community Radio Broadcasters (AMARC) are hosting a series of three, simultaneous regional consultations, followed by one global consultation. The global consultation aims to enable e-Agriculture community members and others to discuss and complement the outcomes of the regional consultations. The regional and global consultations will also inform the Forum on Communication for Development and Community Media for Family Farming, which is taking place in October 2014.

12th Meeting of the REDBIOS Network

The 12th meeting of East Atlantic Biosphere Reserve Network (REDBIOS) will take place under the auspices of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the Government of the Azores. It will consider knowledge transfer, exchange of experiences, and new opportunities for cooperation between REDBIOS biosphere reserves, paying particular attention to the potential contribution of European cooperation programmes, such as the Transnational Cooperation Programme Madeira-Azores-Canary Islands (PCT-MAC), to the REDBIOS network and its projects. Participants will also examine new and planned applications for biosphere reserves, particularly from Cape Verde and the Azores. The meeting will be attended by representatives from the World Network of Island and Coastal Biosphere Reserves (WNICBR) to discuss future relations with other regional and thematic networks on biosphere reserves.

CMS Stakeholder Meeting on the Conservation of Large Mammals in Central Asia

The Secretariat of the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) is convening a 'Stakeholder Meeting on the Conservation of Large Mammals in Central Asia'. The meeting will develop a programme of work to be submitted for adoption at the 11th Conference of the Parties to CMS (COP 11) in November 2014. The Secretariat is also looking into the possibility of convening a COP11 Regional Preparatory and Negotiation Workshop for National Focal Points of central Asian Parties immediately afterwards, from the 26-28 September 2014.

Fourth Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Carpathian Convention (COP 4)

The Fourth Meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 4) to the Framework Convention on the Protection and Sustainable Development of the Carpathians (Carpathian Convention) will meet from 23-26 September in Mikulov, Czech Republic, to decide on the strategic policy direction of the Convention for the next three years. COP 4 also serves as the Meeting of the Parties to its Protocols on Conservation and Sustainable Use of Biological and Landscape Diversity, Sustainable Forest Management, and Sustainable Tourism. Participants will include environment ministers and high-level representatives of the seven Parties to the Convention. Parties are expected to, inter alia, review and decide upon a number of implementing documents, issue declarations and statements, and ratify the Protocol on Sustainable Transport to the Convention.

Workshop on Valuation of Forest Ecosystem Services (VFES)

Convened by FOREST EUROPE and hosted by the Serbian Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management, the workshop will consider how to progress the Programme of Work on the Valuation of Forest Ecosystem Services (VFES). The workshop will allow for the exchange of experiences on VFES and identify priorities to strengthen the consideration of VFES in national policies and market-based mechanisms.

Special High-level Event for the Signature and Ratification of the Minamata Convention on Mercury

A Special High-Level event on the Minamata Convention on Mercury will be held at UN Headquarters, New York, US, on the margins of the 2014 Treaty Event, organized by the UN Office of Legal Affairs. Government representatives are invited to attend to sign the Convention and, where possible, deposit the instrument of ratification. This event intends to offer an opportunity to governments to demonstrate their commitment to the Minamata Convention, and will be used also as a means for outreach to facilitate rapid entry into force of the Convention.

Fourth High-Level Round Table on the ITPGR

Titled 'The International Treaty, Climate Change and Food Security,' the Fourth High-Level Round Table on the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGR) will take place on the occasion of the 69th session of the UN General Assembly and the UN Secretary General's Climate Change Summit. It aims to facilitate high-level discussion of how monetary and non-monetary benefits generated from the utilization of plant germplasm under the Treaty can support agricultural innovation for breeding climate-smart seeds; discuss how to address climate change impacts on food crops through Treaty systems; and showcase the value of the Treaty's Benefit-sharing Fund and its projects for climate adaptation of food crops.

Colloquium on Forests and Climate: New Thinking for Transformational Change

Engaging the Private Sector in the Post-2015 Era: Presentation of a Synthesis Report from Global Consultations

A high-level dialogue is being convened for participants from private and public institutions to discuss a global report that synthesizes the main findings as well as views, experiences and recommendations from national, regional and global consultations on 'Engaging the Private Sector in the Post-2015 Era'. The consultations, facilitated by the UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the UN Global Compact, discussed successful business strategies and actions that can help bringing private industries into the post-2015 development agenda as partners for advancing inclusive and sustainable growth and development. Data Playground: Showcasing Data for the Public Good at the UN

This event will showcase the UN's commitment to the data revolution and the potential and impact of such a revolution. The UN Millennium Campaign (UNMC) and Microsoft will launch an interactive visualization of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) to map progress towards the goals. The UN Secretary-General's Climate Change Support Team and UN Global Pulse will present the winners of the Big Data Climate Challenge, which aims to identify and highlight data-driven evidence on the economic dimensions of climate change. The event will also discuss the results of the MY World survey.

CGIAR Development Dialogues

The Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) is holding its inaugural 'Development Dialogues' to discuss forestry, agriculture, livestock, fisheries, landscapes and food systems in the context of climate change and sustainable development. The event will explore integrated landscape approaches for agriculture, forestry and other land uses in support of efforts to develop sustainable food systems in the midst of climate change, population growth, increasing poverty and the feminization of agriculture. Panelists will include: Manuel Pulgar-Vidal, Minister for Environment of Peru and President of the 20th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC COP 20), and Kwesi Atta-Krah, Director of CGIAR's Research Program on Integrated Systems for the Humid Tropics. Panel discussions will aim to move beyond the “land sparing” versus “land sharing” debates by exploring the geographic, ecological, social and political contexts that influence land use policy. The Development Dialogues will take place during Climate Week NYC alongside the UN General Assembly and the UN Climate Summit. Participants will engage in debates on the following themes: prosperous, food-secure and resilient livelihoods; healthier, innovative, capable and inclusive communities; new partnerships for development impact; and climate change-resilient agro-ecosystems.

Moving to Implementation: Findings from the UNDG Dialogues on Post-2015 Implementation

This panel discussion is co-organized by the UN Development Programme (UNDP) and the UN Development Group (UNDG). It will aim to inform delegates and other stakeholders on how the priorities that people and governments have articulated in the Post-2015 process to date could be implemented. This work builds upon the findings from the UNDG-organized ‘global conversation', and in particular the second round dialogues on means of implementation that are taking place in 50 countries. The goal of the event will be to contribute to the debate and move the focus to the importance of key issues such as accountability, monitoring and participation, localization, and partnerships. Also at the event, the organizers will launch a short report with the main findings from the dialogues. It is an open event and live stream will be available.

WOC Business Forum Workshop: 'Changing Oceans and Industry Futures'

In conjunction with the World Ocean Council (WOC) Business Forum on Ocean Policy and Planning, WOC and the EU 'Ocean Certain' research project are organizing a workshop under the theme, 'Changing Oceans and Industry Futures: How Will Changes to Ocean Properties and Processes Affect Ocean Business?'. Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety COP-MOP 7

The seventh meeting of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) Conference of the Parties serving as Meeting of the Parties (MOP) to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety is scheduled for 29 September-3 October 2014. The Challenges of a Living List: Making Progress on a Green Goods Agreement

Negotiations on a green goods agreement, announced earlier this year in Davos, Switzerland by 14 World Trade Organization (WTO) Members, will aim to create an initial and “living list” of green goods to be revised as technology evolves. This half-day event organized by the Geneva offices of the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES) and the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) will bring together practitioners, experts and administrators from a variety of agreements that have faced the challenges of a “living list,” to discuss their experiences and lessons learned for consideration by the WTO. B4E Climate Summit 2014

The 2014 Business For the Environment (B4E) Climate Summit will be held under the theme 'Moving towards a Restorative Economy'. The day-long event will feature cross-sector working groups on energy, water and forestry, which will help delegates form recommendations for policymakers on supporting restorative and net positive business growth that is good for society, encourages innovation and addresses climate change. 16th Global Meeting of the Regional Seas Conventions and Action Plans

The UN Environment Programme's (UNEP) Regional Seas Programme uses a "shared seas" approach to maintain the biodiversity of oceans and marine ecosystems and to help restore ocean and marine ecosystem health, productivity and resilience. The meeting is expected to discuss: implementation of the Regional Seas Conventions and Action Plans, including their role in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the post-2015 development agenda; the Global Partnership on Marine Litter; regional actions on marine litter; the green economy in a blue world; and development of a roadmap on priorities for the next ten plus years. Fifth US-India Energy Partnership Summit

Organized under the theme 'Accelerating Resilient Growth and Development,' the Fifth US-India Energy Partnership Summit will address a variety of bilateral issues related to energy efficiency, security, access and technology, including multi-stakeholder discussions on new collaborations in the areas of: renewable energy; green buildings and sustainable cities; decentralized energy access; shale gas; and climate change. IV EUROCLIMA Seminar

The fourth meeting of the EUROCLIMA Programme participants, which represents their first meeting since the Programme entered Phase II, will bring together EUROCLIMA national focal points, EU officials, and experts from associated organizations, namely the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), the UN Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), and the Interamerican Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA). The first day will be devoted to interaction with the Iberoamerican Network of Climate Change Offices (RIOCC), which is holding its 11th annual meeting in Lima, Peru, from 30 September-1 October. The second day will look at EUROCLIMA in the context of the EU's recently-approved Indicative Cooperation Programme for Latin America for 2014-2020, preparations for COP 20, plans for EUROCLIMA in the 2014-2016 period, and presentations on EUROCLIMA work at the national level. Integrating Migration into Development: Diaspora as a Development Enabler

An international workshop on ‘Integrating Migration into Development: Diaspora as a Development Enabler' will focus on the interrelationships between migration and the three pillars of sustainable development (economic, social and environmental), and will include the contributions of migrants to development. First Carbon-CAP Stakeholder Workshop

Third Workshop of the LEDS-LAC Regional Platform

2014 Annual Meetings of World Bank and IMF

The 2014 Annual Meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank Group (WBG) will bring together central bankers, ministers of finance and development, private sector executives and academics to discuss issues of global concern, including the world economic outlook, poverty eradication, economic development and aid effectiveness. Seminars, regional briefings, press conferences and other events focused on the global economy, international development and the world's financial system will be held. About 13,000 people are expected to attend this year's meetings. DIVERSITAS, the Swiss Academy of Sciences (SCNAT), the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the International Council for Science's Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean (ICSU ROLAC) will hold a side event at the twelfth meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 12) to the CBD, on the topic 'Access and Benefit-Sharing (ABS) in Latin America and the Caribbean: A science-policy dialogue for academic research'. This side event will introduce the relevance of article 8.a of the Nagoya Protocol on Access and Benefit-sharing (ABS) for facilitated access for academic research, and highlight the importance of a science-policy dialogue to implement ABS and the benefits derived from research.

Cities Biodiversity Summit

Climate Symposium 2014

Climate Symposium 2014 is sponsored by the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT), the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP), the European Commission, the European Space Agency (ESA), and the city of Darmstadt. The symposium will: be an important step towards further developing an efficient and sustained international space-based Earth observing system; bring together international experts in climate observations, research, analysis and modeling; and emphasize the role of space-based Earth observations in improving knowledge of the climate at global and regional scales, and in assessing models used for climate projections. The symposium is organized around the theme 'Enhanced Understanding of Climate Processes through Earth Observation'. Participants will discuss the proposed Architecture for Sustained Climate Monitoring from Space, and consider how Earth observation contributes to future developments in climate prediction and climate change projection. Key discussion themes will also include: clouds, circulation and climate sensitivity; the changing water cycle; the cryosphere in a warming world; ocean circulation and regional sea-level rise; prediction and attribution of extremes (from climate to weather); and regional climate variability and change (enabling climate services). The symposium is expected to: benefit climate-related risk management; facilitate the development of responsible and affordable climate change mitigation and adaptation options; and initiate a process for creating a joint action plan for planning and developing an international space-based climate observing system.

Italy and Africa: Working Together for a Sustainable Energy Future

This conference, organized by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs under the theme, 'Italy and Africa: Working Together for a Sustainable Energy Future,' will explore prospects for investment in power generation, and the development of renewable energy and transmission networks. The conference will encourage the engagement of the Italian and African private sectors in the deployment of renewable energy in Africa, and the strengthening of African energy markets. GSP Training on Digital Soil Mapping for Eastern and Southern Africa Representatives

Organized with the support of the European Commission, the Global Soil Partnership (GSP) has established a Capacity Development Programme on digital mapping in Africa, to be implemented in October 2014 and January 2015. Asia Urban Futures Workshop

Launch of the Decade of SE4ALL Americas and Regional Meeting

This three-day event, organized by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the Ministry of Energy of Chile, the UN and partners, will start on 15 October with the official launch of the UN Decade of Sustainable Energy for All in the Americas (SE4ALL AMERICAS). The launch will provide a platform for announcements and specific contributions in the energy sector, and create a declaration on the vision for SE4ALL for the next decade. Following the launch, on 16-17 October, a Regional Meeting and technical sessions within the SE4ALL framework will be held, which will: define and agree on actions for the SE4ALL AMERICAS; establish priority actions for the next 12 months; and identify ways to implement the proposed actions. As part of the International Year of Family Farming (IYFF), FAO will convene an international Forum on Communication for Development and Community Media for Family Farming (FCCM) to showcase the role of Communication for Development (ComDev) methods and tools as a driver for innovation and family farmers' participation in rural development strategies. First Ministerial and Policy Conference on Sustainable Transport

This conference is part of the Africa Sustainable Transport Forum, a high-level platform for discussion and policy decision making. The Forum aims to integrate sustainable transport into Africa's development and planning processes and increase funding to sustainable transport programmes in Africa, with the broader aim of improving access to transport, reducing air pollution and climate emissions, and improving road safety and health. The Forum also aims to share experiences from demonstration and pilot projects and foster South-South exchanges. The Forum intends to hold Ministerial conferences bi-annually, with Sub-Regional conferences in the interim years. This workshop is being convened as a contribution to the work of the UN Forum on Forests (UNFF) in order to consider options for a future International Arrangement on Forests (IAF). The country-led initiative workshop will build on the work of the first Open-ended Intergovernmental Ad Hoc Expert Group on the International Arrangement on Forests (AHEG1), which considered views from Parties on the matter as well as the report of the Independent Assessment. The 42nd Meeting of the Standing Committee of the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) will convene prior to the 11th Meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 11) to CMS. CMS COP 11

Ecuador will host the eleventh meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 11) to the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) in November 2014, marking the first time that a CMS COP is held in Latin America. The decision was taken during the 41st Meeting of the Standing Committee, on 28 November 2013, in Bonn, Germany. The COP will be preceded by a High Level Ministerial meeting on 3 November. Another Standing Committee meeting will be held 9 November upon closure of the COP.

Second UN Conference on Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDCs)

The 10-year Review Conference on the Implementation of the Almaty Programme of Action, titled ‘Addressing the Special Needs of Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDCs) within a New Global Framework for Transit Transport Cooperation for Landlocked and Transit Developing Countries in 2014,' will aim to: undertake a comprehensive appraisal of the implementation of the Almaty Programme of Action; identify international, regional, subregional and national international trade and transit transport cooperation policies and review transit transport systems within the context of new and emerging challenges, partnerships and opportunities; reaffirm the global commitment to addressing the special development needs of and the challenges faced by LLDCs; and mobilize international support and action by and for LLDCs, including the formulation and adoption of a renewed development partnership framework for the next decade. The Preparatory Committee (PrepCom) for the Conference held its first meeting on 12-13 June 2014. World Conference on Education for Sustainable Development

The 2014 Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) World Conference is organized by the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the Government of Japan, advised by an International Steering Group of 12 ESD experts from around the world. Based on a recommendation of the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD), the UN General Assembly (UNGA) decided to dedicate a UN Decade to ESD (2005-2014) in December 2002. It designated UNESCO to coordinate global efforts to make education relevant for addressing present and future sustainable development challenges. The 2014 ESD World Conference will mark the end of the ESD Decade, as well as constitute an important milestone for pointing the way ahead. It will highlight the role of ESD for the transition to green economies and societies and as a catalyst for cross-sector planning and implementation of programmes in areas such as climate change, biodiversity and disaster risk reduction. The World Conference also will address how ESD can help move sustainable development policy and action forward to meet different global, regional, national, and local needs. The conference will be preceded by stakeholder meetings from 4-8 November.

The inaugural Conference on Land Policy in Africa, co-hosted by the Land Policy Initiative (LPI) and the Forum on Agricultural Research in Africa (FARA), will convene under the theme 'The next Decade of Land Policy in Africa: Ensuring Agricultural Development and Inclusive Growth,' in support of the 2014 African Union (AU) Year of Agriculture and Food Security. The conference, which will be held biennially, aims to create a continental land policy platform for presenting research and drawing stakeholder attention to the issues and status of land policy in Africa. Green Growth and Sustainable Development Forum 2014

The 2014 Green Growth and Sustainable Development (GGSD) Forum is organized by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) under the theme ‘Addressing the social implications of green growth'. Africa Mini Grids Summit 2014

This Summit will provide a high-level platform for industries facing electricity shortages to explore and deploy mini-grids to meet electricity shortfalls in Africa, a region where mini-grids have been actively promoted in such industries as mining and agriculture. Globally, 1.4 billion people lack access to electricity with 85% of the off-grid population in Africa lacking access. Thus, ground-level implementation of renewable and hybrid mini-grids are required in the region and many governments are actively promoting mini-grids and public-private cooperation strategy. Key government officials, leading investors, financiers, independent power producers and technology providers will attend the Summit and share their expertise and experiences to assist in the effective development of mini-grid blueprints. Summit participants will address: market trends; commercial use of mini-grids in mining, heavy industries, sugar and agriculture, and tourism; financing and investment; renewable technologies and hybrids; regulations and policies; and knowledge transfer and human capital. The Summit, which will also include a site visit to a live solar project at Strathmore University, is being organized by the Singapore-based Magenta Global and supported by the African Network for Solar Energy (ANSOLE), Tanzania Renewable Energy Association (TAREA), The Alliance for Rural Electrification (ARE) and African Sustainable Energy Association (AFSEA).

Second International Conference on Nutrition

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO) are jointly organising this intergovernmental conference with the participation of Heads of State and Government and other UN agencies. The conference will identify public policy priorities at the national and global levels to address under-nutrition, micronutrient deficiencies and obesity. The conference aims to improve coordination among the food, health and agriculture sectors, and is expected to result in a political commitment for action and resource mobilization towards the goal of improved nutrition, contributing to the post-2015 development agenda and the Zero Hunger Challenge. The First International Conference on Nutrition took place in 1992, resulting in a World Declaration and Plan of Action for Nutrition.

International Mountain Day 2014

Organized under the theme 'Mountain Farming,' the 2014 International Mountain Day will focus on highlighting the rapid transformation of family farming in mountain regions driven by population growth and economic globalization, among other factors. Preparatory Session I for Third Conference on Financing for Development

The Third International Conference on Financing for Development (FfD) will take place in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on 13-16 July 2015. According to UN General Assembly Resolution 68/279, the first draft of the outcome document will be prepared by the co-facilitators on the basis of informal consultations, taking into account inputs from Member States, and presented by February 2015. Informal consultations and drafting sessions on the outcome document will take place in January 2015 for three days, in April 2015 for five days, and in June 2015 for five days.

Arab Water Week 2015

Arab Water Week 2015 will convene under the theme 'innovations and sustainable solutions for the water sector in the Arab region'. Second meeting of the Open-ended Intergovernmental Ad Hoc Expert Group on the International Arrangement on Forests (AHEG2)

The Ad Hoc Expert Group to the UN Forum on Forests (UNFF) will hold its second meeting (AHEG2) in order to review the International Arrangement on Forests (IAF). Expected outputs from AHEG2 include recommendations on an IAF beyond 2015 based on inputs from stakeholders and an independent review of the IAF multi-year programme of work. 2015 Zaragoza Conference

The UN-Water International Zaragoza Conference in January 2015 will consider the theme "Water and Sustainable Development" and will focus on how to bring the post-2015 international agenda on water and sanitation into action. More than 300 participants from UN agencies and programmes, experts, representatives of the business community, governmental and non-governmental organizations will participate in the 15-17 January 2015 event in Zaragoza, Spain, to draw conclusions based on existing practice and the exchange of views between governments and stakeholders. This event will take place during the final year of the International Decade for Action 'Water for Life,' and participants will contribute to efforts to take stock of and learn from achievements as well as planning the next steps. This invitation-only event also will help UN-Water to prepare for World Water Day, which will focus on “water and sustainable development” in 2015.

Ninth Ad Hoc Open-ended Informal Working Group to Study Issues Relating to the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Marine BBNJ

This meeting of the Ad Hoc Open-ended Informal Working Group to study issues relating to the conservation and sustainable use of marine biological diversity beyond areas of national jurisdiction (BBNJ) is the third of three meetings (April 2014, June 2014 and January 2015) that the UN General Assembly (UNGA) requested be convened. Dresden Nexus Conference 2015

The Dresden Nexus Conference (DNC) 2015 will convene under the theme 'Global Change, Sustainable Development Goals and the Nexus Approach,' and include participants from UN organizations, UN University (UNU) institutes, governments, international organizations, as well as individual researchers and representatives of non-governmental organizations (NGOs). 3rd Global Soil Week

The 3rd Global Soil Week will provide a platform for discussions on issues related to soils and land, and facilitate the emergence of new initiatives and strengthen existing ones. 2015 Global Land Forum

The 2015 Global Land Forum will take place under the theme 'Land governance for inclusive development, justice and sustainability: time for action'. The event will bring together practitioners, land users, activists, policy makers and researchers from around the world. Fourteenth World Forestry Congress

The 2015 World Forestry Congress, the first to be held in Africa, will come together under the theme, ‘Forests and People – Investing in a sustainable future'. The Congress, convened by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) and the government of South Africa, will consider how forests can be mainstreamed into global discussions on sustainable development and will facilitate the development of partnerships to address global forestry issues.

South Africa International Renewable Energy Conference 2015 (SAIREC)

The Government of South Africa together with the South African National Energy Development Institute (SANEDI) and the Renewable Energy Policy Network for the 21st Century (REN21) are hosting the South Africa International Renewable Energy Conference (SAIREC), to gather ministers, decision-makers, civil society, academia and the private sector to discuss experiences and strategies for accelerating the global deployment of renewable energy. The event is aimed particularly at giving the African renewable energy industry opportunities to showcase its work and gain insights from other participants. Second Meeting of the UN Environment Assembly

The UN Environment Assembly (UNEA) will convene for the second time in 2016. The UNEA of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) represents the highest level of governance of international environmental affairs in the UN system. The Rio+20 conference agreed in June 2012 to strengthen and upgrade UNEP through measures including universal membership of its Governing Council and ensuring the active participation of all relevant stakeholders. In March 2013, the 67th session of the UN General Assembly changed the designation of the Governing Council of UNEP to become UNEA, reflecting the intention to elevate its status.

2016 IUCN World Conservation Congress

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) World Congress meets every four years to bring together leaders from government, the public sector, non-governmental organizations, business, UN agencies and indigenous and grass-roots organizations to discuss and decide on solutions to environment and development challenges worldwide. The event will hold a public forum consisting of debates, workshops, dialogues, round-table discussions, training courses, music and exhibitions, as well as a Members\' Assembly that will deliberate on IUCN resolutions and recommendations regarding key conservation issues.

Expo 2017: Future Energy

The international Expo 2017 will take place in Astana, Kazakhstan, and will aim to promote the most appropriate and viable sustainability-driven action plans to address the possibilities of future energy. The Expo, organized under the theme 'Future Energy' and the sub-theme 'Solutions for Tackling Humankind's Greatest Challenge,' will address future energy from several perspectives, including: exploration of stategies, programmes and technologies for sustainable energy development; promotion of energy security and efficiency; and the encouragement of renewable energy use. Venues for the World's Fairs and their themes are determined by taking into account political, economic, geographical and cultural contexts. The history of World's Fairs extends back to “the Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of all Nations,” which took place in London in 1851.
