European Forest Week 2013
This week will be celebrated under the theme 'The role of forests and forest products in a Green Economy' and will focus on the contribution of forests to the green economy. The main celebrations will be centred on Metsä 2013, the joint session of the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) Committee on Forests and the Forest Industry and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) European Forestry Commission. Additional events will be held throughout Europe.

EGM for Global Sustainable Development Report: Engaging National Assessments
The Expert Group Meeting (EGM) for the Global Sustainable Development Report: Engaging National Assessments is one of a series of EGMs designed to support the preparation and review of the Global Sustainable Development Report. This EGM will discuss a prototype of the Global Sustainable Development Report, including recommendations for strengthening the science-policy interface. The EGM also will discuss processes for future Global Sustainable Development Reports, including scope, methodology and frameworks for involving national processes in report preparation. The EGM is expected to provide inputs to the UN Secretary-General's report on options for future reports, including recommendations on a national reporting framework and specific institutional suggestions, such as a board for the Global Sustainable Development Report, a global network of national institutions or special advisory group. Central and Eastern Europe Regional Workshop on Mainstreaming Biosafety into National Measures
Organized by the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), this workshop will seek to identify strategies and actions to mainstream biosafety into national measures and strengthen the capacities of Parties in the Central and Eastern European Region to effectively implement the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety. The workshop will: take stock of the status of implementation of the Protocol in the region and share experiences and lessons learned in the mainstreaming of national measures; identify mechanisms to improve Parties' legal and administrative measures to implement obligations under the Protocol; and promote awareness of the objective and core requirements of the Nagoya-Kuala Lumpur Supplementary Protocol on Liability and Redress and review the challenges and opportunities with regard to its ratification and implementation.

High-Level Symposium on Sustainable Cities and Sustainable Urbanisation
The UN Division for Sustainable Development (DSD), in collaboration with the Municipal Government of Yangzhou, Jiangsu Province, China, is organizing this symposium as a follow-up to the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20), which recognized the importance of sustainable cities. The three-day symposium will discuss: global challenges; slum upgrading; challenges of providing drinking water, sanitation and waste management; green infrastructure, including transport; the role of science, education, technology, history and culture in driving dynamic cities; and urban-rural dynamics in building seamless rural and urban economies. Global E-Consultation: Promoting Equality, Including Social Equity
Through this e-consultation, stakeholders can give feedback to the Open Working Group on Sustainable Development Goals (OWG) regarding the Issue Brief on “Promoting Equality, including Social Equity” in advance of OWG 8, which will focus on promoting equality, including social equity, gender equality and women's empowerment, among other issues. People's Voices Series: Anti-Corruption, Poverty, and Post-2015

2014 UN-Water International Zaragoza Conference
The 2014 UN-Water Annual International Zaragoza Conference will be organized around the theme ‘Preparing for World Water Day 2014,' and aims to contribute to two World Water Day objectives: demonstrating the economic and social impacts of integrated approaches to water and energy; and identifying and engaging water-energy stakeholders in developing water-energy linkages. The conference will analyze and evaluate existing UN agency partnerships and discuss the way forward for achieving water and energy security through partnerships. Intergovernmental Preparatory Committee for 3rd International Conference on SIDS [tentative]
In early 2014, an intergovernmental preparatory committee will convene to prepare for the Third International Conference on Small Island Developing States (SIDS). The decision on the preparatory process for the Conference was taken in the UN General Assembly (UNGA) on 21 December 2012, following consultations in the Second Committee, which approved Resolution A/C.2/67/L.40. The PrepCom process likely will culminate with a final meeting ahead of the Conference itself, in Apia, Samoa, in 2014.

First Annual Sustainable Development Transition Forum
The UN Office for Sustainable Development (UNOSD) will host the first annual Sustainable Development Transition Forum (SDIF), formerly called the Sustainable Development Implementation Forum (SDIF) on 9-11 April 2014, in Incheon, Republic of Korea. According to UNOSD, the SDTF aims to serve as a global platform for sharing best practices in formulating and implementing sustainable development programmes, reviewing evidence of impact, and charting out new and improved pathways for sustainable development implementation. The programme of the annual Forum also will include topics related to: scaling up implementation; finding effective solutions to address implementation constraints and challenges; examining emerging issues in the context of planning and implementation; promoting the science-policy-practice interface to ensure the transition towards sustainability; and promoting and facilitating partnerships, as well as building communities of practice. The SDTF will include high-level policy dialogues, training sessions, seminars, side events, and expert panel discussions covering key cross-cutting sustainable development and green economy issues and good practices in strategy-making and policy implementation. 5th Biennial C40 Mayors Summit

14th Delhi Sustainable Development Summit: Attaining Energy, Water and Food Security for All
Organized annually by the Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) since 2001, the Delhi Sustainable Development Summit (DSDS) serves as a platform exchange global knowledge on sustainable development. In 2014 the conference theme will be "Attaining Energy, Water and Food Security for All" and will hold thematic tracks on these specific areas of energy, water and food security. These topics were chosen due to their centrality and interrelation in alleviating poverty and to creating a climate resilient and robust green economy, and the current threat to water and food security stemming from the current and growing overconsumption of water and other natural resources. Gender, Water and Development Conference 2014
This conference will consider how to address gender, poverty and water challenges across Africa under the theme of 'Gender, Water and Development: The Untapped Connection'. The conference is hosted by the Water Research Commission of South Africa, in partnership with the Department of Water Affairs of South Africa, the African Ministers Council on Water (AMCOW), the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the Women for Water Partnership. AMCOW developed the Policy and Strategy for Mainstreaming Gender in the Water Sector in Africa, which identifies seven strategic objectives for member States and water authorities. These sub-themes are: formulating and implementing gender in water policy; mobilizing human and financial resources; implementing projects through economic empowerment and gendered approaches; conducting, sharing and implementing research and operational knowledge; mainstreaming gender in human and institutional capacity development; promoting cooperation and coordination to mainstream gender in the water sector; and supporting gender equality in the water sector through monitoring and evaluation (M&E).

7th Global FRIEND-Water Conference
The Flow Regime from International Experimental and Network Data (FRIEND)-Water Conference 2014 will focus on the theme “Hydrology in a Changing World: Environmental and Human Dimensions.” FRIEND-Water aims to facilitate understanding about how climate, human and river basin factors influence the spatial and temporal distribution of water. The 2014 conference will share knowledge on changes in hydrological processes and their impacts, including ecological flows, erosion and sedimentation, and will discuss how to develop adaptable water management and water policies to account for these impacts. The conference will focus on six topics: hydrological databases; trends in hydrological regimes and extremes; changes in ecological flows and coastal ecohydrology; erosion and sediment transport processes and trends; regional observational-hydrological modeling frameworks; and water resources and prospective scenarios. Global Ocean Action Summit [rescheduled]
The Global Ocean Action Summit for Food Security and Blue Growth, organized by the Government of the Netherlands and the World Bank, is meant to "seal major deals for worldwide action" addressing the threats to the health and productivity of oceans. The meeting aims to mobilize financial and technical support for attaining established goals under the Global Partnership for Oceans (GPO). It will also host the first official assembly of GPO partners, and will mark the implementation phase of the GPO. In addition, a report indicating priority areas and regions for action will be launched by the GPO Blue Ribbon Panel, an independent group of ocean experts. Attendance is by invitation only. The Summit was originally scheduled to take place in September 2013.

World Migratory Bird Day 2014
World Migratory Bird Day (WMBD) is a global initiative devoted to celebrating migratory birds and to promoting their conservation worldwide. WMBD 2014 will take place on the weekend of 10-11 May 2014 and is being organized by the Secretariats of the African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbird Agreement (AEWA) and the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) and other partners. The theme for 2014 will be linked to the topic of tourism and migratory birds, focusing on the global bird and wildlife watching industry and sustainable tourism as a vehicle to conserve migratory birds and their habitats. WMBD plans to work closely with the UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) in promoting the 'Destination Flyways' project, which focuses on the protection of migratory birds and their habitats and the creation of sustainable livelihoods for local communities through the development of innovative tourism products along the world's major flyways.

Building Resilience for Food and Nutrition Security
The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) 2020 Conference, which will convene from 15-17 May 2014, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, will bring together policymakers, practitioners and scholars to discuss how resilience can be strengthened for food and nutrition security. 46th GEF Council Meeting and GEF Assembly
The Global Environment Facility (GEF) Assembly will be held back-to-back with the 46th GEF Council meeting in Mexico. A report on the host city, Cancún, was considered at the 45th Council meeting in November 2013. The CSO Consultation, GEF Council and LDCF/SCCF Council Meetings will convene from 25-27 May, with the Council meeting beginning on 25 May and overlapping for half a day, on 27 May, with the CSO Consultation. The Assembly will convene from 28-30 May. All 183 member nations, including South Sudan – the GEF's newest member – will gather for the Assembly. The GEF Council meets twice a year, while the Assembly meets every four years to take major decisions, including endorsement of the next four-year GEF replenishment package.

20th World Congress of Soil Science
The Korean Society of Soil Science and Fertilizer will host the 20th World Congress of Soil Science (WCSS). The meeting will take advantage of the fact that the field of soil science is expanding because of the growing interest in food security and safety as well as environmental quality. In addition, many state-of-the-art emerging technologies being developed in other fields are available to adapt to soil science, creating an explosion of information and knowledge in the many fields of soil science. The 20th WCSS will provide an opportunity to examine the changes in soil science and to envision new perspectives for basic and applied soil research. World Conference on Education for Sustainable Development
The 2014 Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) World Conference is organized by the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the Government of Japan, advised by an International Steering Group of 12 ESD experts from around the world. Based on a recommendation of the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD), the UN General Assembly (UNGA) decided to dedicate a UN Decade to ESD (2005-2014) in December 2002. It designated UNESCO to coordinate global efforts to make education relevant for addressing present and future sustainable development challenges. The 2014 ESD World Conference will mark the end of the ESD Decade, as well as constitute an important milestone for pointing the way ahead. It will highlight the role of ESD for the transition to green economies and societies and as a catalyst for cross-sector planning and implementation of programmes in areas such as climate change, biodiversity and disaster risk reduction. The World Conference also will address how ESD can help move sustainable development policy and action forward to meet different global, regional, national, and local needs. The conference will be preceded by stakeholder meetings from 4-8 November.
