Land Policy Initiative Experts' Group Meeting

The Land Policy Initiative (LPI) is organizing an Experts' Group Meeting (EGM) to revise and validate the LPI's draft communications and advocacy strategy. The LPI developed the draft strategy to: increase awareness and understanding by stakeholders of its objectives; and better position itself as a key driver on land issues in Africa. The validation meeting is expected to: review and discuss the draft strategy to ensure it is in line with the LPI's strategic objectives; provide technical inputs to enrich the draft document for finalization; recommend additional ways to make the strategy more relevant and effective; and propose follow-up actions and partnerships to more effectively implement the strategy. The LPI is a joint programme of the tripartite consortium consisting of the African Union Commission (AUC), the African Development Bank (AfDB) and UN Economic Commission for Africa (ECA).

Sixth Virtual Meeting of the Working Group on Capacity Building and Cooperation on the Principle 10 Declaration in LAC

The Working Group on Capacity Building and Cooperation will hold its 6th virtual meeting. The working group was established by the Plan of Action to 2014 for the implementation of the Declaration of Principle 10, adopted in April 2013 in Guadalajara, Mexico, in order to advance towards the formulation of a regional instrument. The working group's objective is to formulate a proposal to intensify regional and international cooperation on the basis of training and financing needs and options, for both the public sector and the public in general.

Capacity-Building Workshop for Mesoamerica on Ecosystem Conservation and Restoration to Support Achievement of the Aichi Biodiversity Targets

This workshop, organized by the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), is part of a series being organized with financial assistance from Japan, Germany, Canada and the Republic of Korea. Through the workshop, the Secretariat plans to offer capacity-building to Parties within an integrated and participatory approach to promote holistic planning and implementation at the landscape level. The workshop aims to offer support in: development of national targets and plans for ecosystem conservation and restoration; integration of these targets and plans into updated National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) and mainstreaming into broader national policies, plans and programmes; and use of appropriate assessment, policy and planning tools to promote ecosystem conservation and restoration at appropriate levels. The Mesoamerican workshop will take place back-to-back with an Inter-Regional Workshop on REDD+ and Aichi Biodiversity Targets.

Regional Capacity-Building Workshop for the Pacific Region on Traditional Knowledge and Customary Sustainable Use under the CBD

At this workshop, participants will consider, among other items: the CBD Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020 and the Aichi Biodiversity Targets; participation of indigenous and local communities (ILCs) in the work of the Convention; Articles 8(j) (traditional knowledge), 10(c) (customary sustainable use) and related provisions, and current work in preparation for the twelfth meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 12); the Joint Programme of Work between the CBD Secretariat and the UN Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) on Biological and Cultural Diversity and ILCs; and ILCs and the Nagoya Protocol.

WHO Conference on Health and Climate

This three-day conference, hosted by the World Health Organization (WHO) at its headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, will bring together leading experts in the fields of health and climate change, to discuss: strengthening health system resilience to climate risks; and promoting health while mitigating climate change. Within each of these themes the conference will make recommendations on policy options to maximize health benefits, and the specific contribution of the health sector to the objectives.

65th Annual UN DPI/NGO Conference

The 65th UN DPI/NGO Conference is titled '2015 and Beyond: Our Action Agenda,' is being organized by the UN Department of Public Information and the NGO/DPI Executive Committee, and will focus on the theme of 'The role of civil society in the post 2015 development agenda'. The event seeks to provide an opportunity for civil society networks and activists to mobilize messaging, advocacy strategies, partnerships and accountability frameworks in the lead up to the start of the intergovernmental negotiations on the post-2015 development agenda. The outcome of the conference will be a declaration that will be shared with the UN system, the UN Member States, the global civil society and other stakeholders.

Major Groups and Stakeholders Forum for Third International Conference on SIDS Steering Committee

The Division of Sustainable Development (DSD) of the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) is organizing this Forum in collaboration with an 18-member steering committee representing the nine Major Groups, and the Caribbean, Pacific and AIMS (Africa, Indian Ocean, Mediterranean and South China Sea) regions. SIDS Pre-Conference Youth Forum

The Youth Forum takes place prior to the Third International Conference on Small Island Developing States (SIDS) and aims to contribute to its dialogue. The Forum will discuss opportunities for young people from SIDS, including partnerships to generate decent work opportunities for youth, engagement of civil society and the private sector in the development process, and sustainable energy needs. The Youth Forum theme is ‘SIDS TALAVOU for Sustainable Development' (Towards a Legacy of Achievement, Versatility, Opportunity through partnership and Unity). Participants will reflect on successful approaches to young people's education, employment and entrepreneurship, and identify what support and guidance is needed to maintain existing partnerships and promote new ones. The one-day forum is preceded by a welcome ceremony and networking event from 6.30-9.30 pm on 27 August.

SIDS Major Groups and Other Stakeholders Forum

This pre-conference Forum will take place ahead of the Third International Conference on Small Island Developing States (SIDS). The Forum will promote opportunities for Major Groups and other stakeholders from SIDS to develop partnerships with each other and with potential supporters, with the overall aim of promoting the sustainable development of SIDS. The Forum aims to integrate gender equality and human rights advocacy into discussions around SIDS, the Beijing+20 Review and the post-2015 development agenda. Civil society partnerships are envisaged in six priority areas: climate change and disaster risk management; oceans, seas and biodiversity; water and sanitation, food security and waste management; sustainable economic development; sustainable energy; and social development, including health and non-communicable diseases (NCDs), youth and women. The Forum is also expected to assist in mobilizing resources for a proposed Civil Society Sustainability Fund. A welcome event will take place on the evening of 28 August.

Inter-Regional Capacity-Building Workshop on REDD+ and Aichi Biodiversity Targets

This workshop is organized by the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) in collaboration with the UN Environment Programme - World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC), with financial support from Japan. Through the inter-regional workshop, the CBD and UNEP-WCMC aim to explore the synergies between the Aichi Biodiversity Targets and objectives of REDD+ to develop a coherent approach to landscape planning processes. The workshop aims to support Parties in: increasing coordination between REDD+ and CBD focal points through sharing experiences and knowledge; integrating REDD+ actions into updated National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) and mainstreaming into broader national policies; and demonstrating the appropriate data gathering processes, assessments, policies and other planning tools for implementing a coherent approach to REDD+ and NBSAPs. The workshop will take place back-to-back with the 'Capacity-Building Workshop for Mesoamerica on Ecosystem Conservation and Restoration.'

SIDS Private Sector Forum

The Government of Samoa, the Samoa Chamber of Commerce, and the UN Office of the High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States (UN-OHRLLS) are convening this event prior to the Third International Conference on SIDS. The Forum aims to facilitate interaction and networking between senior business and government leaders to enhance private sector partnerships for SIDS, in six thematic areas of: agriculture; tourism; renewable energy; fisheries and marine resources; disaster risk reduction (DRR); and connectivity, information and communication technologies (ICTs) and transport. The second day of the Forum is a high-level session that is anticipated to produce an outcome document identifying the private sector's priority actions. The Forum will announce a SIDS Global Business Leaders Network. UN-OHRILLS, with the UN Office for South-South Cooperation (UOSSC) will host a ‘matchmaking space' at the Forum to facilitate business relationships in areas such as agriculture, clean energy and water management.

SIDS Renewable Energy Forum

The Government of New Zealand and the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) are organising this event ahead of the Third International Conference on Small Island Developing States (SIDS). The Forum will highlight the benefits of renewable energy for SIDS, provide an opportunity for mutual learning about relevant policies and practices, and promote partnerships for the deployment of renewable energy in SIDS. The Forum is anticipated to highlight the importance of measurable targets in energy partnerships, and to announce the formation of new partnerships.

Third International Conference on Small Island Developing States

The Third International Conference on Small Island Developing States (SIDS) is scheduled to convene from 1-4 September 2014, in Samoa. This UN conference will include a high-level segment to build upon the Barbados Programme of Action (BPOA) and the Mauritius Strategy for Implementation (MSI), and will identify new challenges for the sustainable development of SIDS. According to UN General Assembly resolution A/67/L.66, "The General Assembly, recalling its resolution 67/207 of 21 December 2012, in which it welcomed the offer of the Government of the Independent State of Samoa to host the third International Conference on Small Island Developing States in 2014, decides that the third International Conference on Small Island Developing States shall be held from 1 to 4 September 2014 in Apia, to be preceded by activities related to the Conference from 28 to 30 August 2014, also in Apia". In addition, a Partnerships Forum will take place on 30-31 August.

15th World Lake Conference

The 15th World Lake Conference, convened by the International Lake Environment Committee (ILEC), will take place on the theme “Lakes: The Mirrors of the Earths, Balancing Ecosystem Integrity and Human Wellbeing”. The conference will bring together representatives from international, national and state agencies, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), academic institutions, the private sector and other water stakeholders. Asia Pacific Conference on Development Justice

The Asia Pacific Research Network (APRN) is holding its biennial Asia Pacific Conference on Development Justice on the theme of 'Building a People's Transformative Post-2015 Development Agenda'. Milankovitch Anniversary UNESCO Symposium on Water Management in Transition Countries

Latin American and Caribbean Carbon Forum (LACCF)

The Latin American and Caribbean Carbon Forum (LACCF) will take place from 3-5 September 2014, in Bogotá, Colombia. The Forum will: inform attendees of developments in carbon markets; provide a venue for connecting carbon project developers and investors; showcase lessons from completed Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) projects in Latin America and the Caribbean; feature presentations on public and private sector strategies for promoting CDM benefits in the region; offer the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions (NAMAs), Low Carbon Development Strategies (LEDS), market mechanisms, and green investment in the region; and encourage networking and discussions among technical experts, project developers and carbon buyers. UNFCCC Compliance Committee Meetings

The two branches of the UNFCCC Compliance Committee will meet on 4 September 2014. The enforcement branch's meeting will be its 25th, while the facilitative branch will gather for its 16th meeting. The 15th plenary of the Compliance Committee will follow from 4-5 September 2014. The enforcement branch is tasked with determining consequences for lack of compliance under the Kyoto Protocol, while the facilitative branch's role is to promote compliance.

Seminar on Earth Observations in Support of Sustainable Water Management

Organized as part of the 2014 World Water Week of the Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI), this seminar will present a collaborative programme to support the use of Earth Observation (EO) for Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) by the UN Development Programme (UNDP) Capacity Development in Sustainable Water Management network (Cap-Net) and the European Space Agency's (ESA) TIGER initiative. The seminar will: showcase capacity-development activities in the areas of EO and IWRM in Africa, including an open source observation system and training material; assess the applicability of the programme to other regions; and discuss how EO can support energy-relevant aspects of IWRM.

3rd UNITAR-Yale Conference on Environmental Governance and Democracy

The Third UN Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR)-Yale Conference on Environmental Governance and Democracy will meet under the theme of 'Human Rights, Environmental Sustainability, Post-2015 Development, and the Future Climate Regime'. It will bring together more than 150 scholars and policy experts to discuss state-of-the-art knowledge regarding themes that are at the nexus of human rights and the environment, including: whether constitutional environmental rights are a driver for environmental policy-making; human rights and environmental justice cases from countries and the field; why and how procedural environmental rights matter; human rights, environment and corporate responsibility; and effective participation of civil society and vulnerable groups. The outcomes and conclusions are expected to contribute to: discussions on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and a post-2015 development agenda; negotiations of a future climate change regime; the 2014 World Conference on Indigenous Peoples; and the 2015 report of the UN Independent Expert on Human Rights and the Environment (UNIEHRE). International Solid Waste Association 2014 Solid Waste World Congress

7th Annual ESP Conference 2014

The 7th Conference of the Ecosystem Services Partnership (ESP) will convene under the title, 'Local action for the common good'. The conference will focus on the use of ecosystem services at the local level, with a special emphasis on Costa Rica and Latin America. Several EU-funded projects will present their results on Community-Based Ecosystem Management: CiVi.Net, COBRA, EcoADAPT and COMETLA. 37th WEDC International Conference

The 37th Water, Engineering and Development Centre (WEDC) International Conference will take place under the theme, ‘Sustainable Water and Sanitation Services for All in a Fast Changing World'. Bioenergy from Forest Conference

The Bioenergy from Forest Conference will address the future of bioenergy, including the creation of and access to markets worldwide, the use of national forest resources in international business, and the incorporation of forest energy resources into national strategies. Technological issues to be discussed include combustion, boiler technologies, Combined Heat and Power (CHP), and conversion technologies. Joint FAO/WHO Meeting on Pesticide Residues (JMPR)

The Joint Meeting on Pesticide Residues (JMPR) is an expert ad hoc body administered jointly by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO), which harmonizes the requirement and the risk assessment on the pesticide residues. The Committee invites submissions of information on substances that will be evaluated at future meetings as described in its requests for data. The list of substances to be evaluated is based on recommendations of the Codex Committee on Pesticide Residues (CCPR), previous Expert Meetings, and direct requests from governments, other interested organizations, and producers of substances that have been evaluated previously.

International Symposium on Agroecology for Food Security and Nutrition

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) is organizing this symposium to highlight existing practices in agroecology and exchange information on the latest research and science in the field. The symposium is expected to result in an action plan for a follow-up process for Africa and Asia; contributions to an international framework for research on agroecology, including relevant economic, social, environmental and climatic aspects; and informational material such as video interviews and agroecological practices for online sharing. Green Standards Week

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) is organizing Green Standards Week under the theme, 'Setting the Vision for Smart Sustainable Cities'. The Week will feature a high-level forum on the main theme and forums on related themes, including: 'Green Information and Communications Technology (ICT) for a Sustainable Resource Efficient Economy;' 'E-waste: The Inconvenient Truth;' and 'Using electromagnetic fields (EMF) to Achieve the Smartest Sustainable City'. The 26th Danube Conference, part of a series of biennial conferences hosted alternately by the countries of the river Danube, is being hosted by Germany, in Deggendorf. UN Private Sector Forum

The 2014 edition of the UN Private Sector Forum will be held on the sidelines of the UN Secretary-General's Climate Summit, and will focus on carbon pricing, specifically actions that the public and private sectors can take to achieve an equitable and fair valuation of carbon through long-term strategies, investments and policies. Thus, the Forum aims to: enable business and investors to identify the contribution they can make towards pricing the cost of carbon emissions; and inspire public policy measures, commitments to action and public-private partnerships to achieve a carbon price. The Forum, convened by the UN Global Compact in cooperation with the World Bank Group, and with the support of UN partners, will be comprised of: a High-Level Luncheon, co-chaired by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and World Bank Group President Jim Yong Kim; and a Business and Civil Society Special Session, featuring leadership actions that businesses can take in cooperation with governments to address climate change. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has been convening the UN Private Sector Forum since 2008 during the opening session of the UN General Assembly in order to bring private sector's voice to intergovernmental debates on key topics.

The Challenges of a Living List: Making Progress on a Green Goods Agreement

Negotiations on a green goods agreement, announced earlier this year in Davos, Switzerland by 14 World Trade Organization (WTO) Members, will aim to create an initial and “living list” of green goods to be revised as technology evolves. This half-day event organized by the Geneva offices of the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES) and the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) will bring together practitioners, experts and administrators from a variety of agreements that have faced the challenges of a “living list,” to discuss their experiences and lessons learned for consideration by the WTO. B4E Climate Summit 2014

The 2014 Business For the Environment (B4E) Climate Summit will be held under the theme 'Moving towards a Restorative Economy'. Fifth US-India Energy Partnership Summit

Climate Symposium 2014

Climate Symposium 2014 is sponsored by the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT), the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP), the European Commission, the European Space Agency (ESA), and the city of Darmstadt. The symposium will: be an important step towards further developing an efficient and sustained international space-based Earth observing system; bring together international experts in climate observations, research, analysis and modeling; and emphasize the role of space-based Earth observations in improving knowledge of the climate at global and regional scales, and in assessing models used for climate projections. The symposium is organized around the theme 'Enhanced Understanding of Climate Processes through Earth Observation'. Participants will discuss the proposed Architecture for Sustained Climate Monitoring from Space, and consider how Earth observation contributes to future developments in climate prediction and climate change projection. This event builds on discussions held at a UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) global forum on 23-24 June 2014, among governments, development agencies and industry actors from developed and developing countries, on strategies for inclusive and sustainable industrial development. This October 2014 forum will focus on mobilizing relevant stakeholders in order to develop a portfolio of concrete partnership opportunities to establish infrastructure, such as industrial parks, in countries where UNIDO has already been implementing activities and accumulating knowledge.

First Africa Regional Mountain Meeting

The First African Mountains Regional Forum will take place under the theme, ‘Towards a Shared Mountain Agenda for Africa'. The Forum aims to frame a regional agenda for sustainable mountain development in African mountains as well as to enhance collaboration among African government institutions, academia, civil society and the private sector. The Forum's objectives are to: identify strategic actions to address major emerging regional issues, such as climate change; and provide an opportunity for stakeholders to enhance understanding of common regional conservation and development issues, including challenges related to climate change, energy, food security and water in African mountain regions. Africa Conference on Land Grabs 2014

ICAO Environmental ​Seminars in the APAC Region

As part of a series of two environmental seminars held back-to-back in each region of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the International Aviation and Environment Seminar will be held from 28-29 October 2014, and the States' Action Plans Seminar will be held from 29-30 October 2014, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, for the Asia and Pacific (APAC) Region. First Ministerial and Policy Conference on Sustainable Transport

This conference is part of the Africa Sustainable Transport Forum, a high-level platform for discussion and policy decision making. The Forum aims to integrate sustainable transport into Africa's development and planning processes and increase funding to sustainable transport programmes in Africa, with the broader aim of improving access to transport, reducing air pollution and climate emissions, and improving road safety and health. The Forum also aims to share experiences from demonstration and pilot projects and foster South-South exchanges. The Forum intends to hold Ministerial conferences bi-annually, with Sub-Regional conferences in the interim years. The Forum is a partnership among the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), the UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT) and the World Bank. UNEP hosts the Forum Secretariat.

Workshop on International Arrangement on Forests (IAF) beyond 2015

This workshop is being convened as a contribution to the work of the UN Forum on Forests (UNFF) in order to consider options for a future International Arrangement on Forests (IAF). The country-led initiative workshop will build on the work of the first Open-ended Intergovernmental Ad Hoc Expert Group on the International Arrangement on Forests (AHEG1), which considered views from Parties on the matter as well as the report of the Independent Assessment. 42nd Meeting of the CMS Standing Committee

The 42nd Meeting of the Standing Committee of the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) will convene prior to the 11th Meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 11) to CMS. CMS COP 11

Ecuador will host the eleventh meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 11) to the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) in November 2014, marking the first time that a CMS COP is held in Latin America. The decision was taken during the 41st Meeting of the Standing Committee, on 28 November 2013, in Bonn, Germany. The COP will be preceded by a High Level Ministerial meeting on 3 November. Another Standing Committee meeting will be held 9 November upon closure of the COP.

Second UN Conference on LLDCs

The 10-year Review Conference on the Implementation of the Almaty Programme of Action, titled ‘Addressing the Special Needs of Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDCs) within a New Global Framework for Transit Transport Cooperation for Landlocked and Transit Developing Countries in 2014,' has four key aims. It aims to: undertake a comprehensive appraisal of the implementation of the Almaty Programme of Action; identify international, regional, subregional and national international trade and transit transport cooperation policies and review transit transport systems within the context of new and emerging challenges, partnerships and opportunities; reaffirm the global commitment to addressing the special development needs of and the challenges faced by LLDCs; and mobilize international support and action by and for LLDCs, including the formulation and adoption of a renewed development partnership framework for the next decade. In advance of the conference, the Open-ended Intergovernmental Preparatory Committee for the Conference is expected to hold two sessions at UN Headquarters in New York, the US: the first from 12-13 June; and the second from 11-12 September.

ForestSAT 2014: A Bridge between Forest Sciences, Remote Sensing and Geo-Spatial Applications

Fifth International Forum on Energy for Sustainable Development

The Fifth International Forum on Energy for Sustainable Development will emphasize accomplishing the three Sustainable Energy for All (SE4All) objectives through a regional agenda and sharing of experiences, namely universal access to modern energy services, doubling energy efficiency and doubling the share of renewable energy by 2030 globally. Social Pre-COP

The Social PreCOP will be held from 4-7 November 2014, ahead of UNFCCC COP 20. It will welcome civil society organizations from all over the world, including those attending the UNFCCC negotiations or involved in other UN processes, as well as organizations with no formal UN status. International Conference on Solar Energy Technology in Development Cooperation

The Austrian Development Agency in cooperation with AEE-INTEC, BSW Solar and GIZ sponsors a two-day conference to explore issues related to providing sustainable energy to the two billion people in developing countries that do not have access to modern energy supplies, while curbing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and meeting growing energy demand. World Conference on Education for Sustainable Development

The 2014 Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) World Conference is organized by the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the Government of Japan, advised by an International Steering Group of 12 ESD experts from around the world. Based on a recommendation of the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD), the UN General Assembly (UNGA) decided to dedicate a UN Decade to ESD (2005-2014) in December 2002. It designated UNESCO to coordinate global efforts to make education relevant for addressing present and future sustainable development challenges. The 2014 ESD World Conference will mark the end of the ESD Decade, as well as constitute an important milestone for pointing the way ahead. It will highlight the role of ESD for the transition to green economies and societies and as a catalyst for cross-sector planning and implementation of programmes in areas such as climate change, biodiversity and disaster risk reduction. The World Conference also will address how ESD can help move sustainable development policy and action forward to meet different global, regional, national, and local needs. The conference will be preceded by stakeholder meetings from 4-8 November.

International Conference on Ecohydrology

The International Conference on Ecohydrology aims to synthesize information and knowledge gaps to address issues related to aquatic ecosystems; and to assess how ecohydrology and ecotechnology could provide low cost environmentally sound technology for sustainable water management, especially in the Asia Pacific region. The meeting will be held in conjunction with the 22nd meeting of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) International Hydrological Programme (IHP) Regional Steering Committee for Southeast Asia and the Pacific.

Green Growth and Sustainable Development Forum 2014

The 2014 Green Growth and Sustainable Development (GGSD) Forum is organized by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) under the theme ‘Addressing the social implications of green growth'. The 2014 Forum will focus on distributional consequences of implementing green growth strategies and their impact on employment, income and skills. Second International Conference on Nutrition

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO) are jointly organising this intergovernmental conference with the participation of Heads of State and Government and other UN agencies. The conference will identify public policy priorities at the national and global levels to address under-nutrition, micronutrient deficiencies and obesity. The conference aims to improve coordination among the food, health and agriculture sectors, and is expected to result in a political commitment for action and resource mobilization towards the goal of improved nutrition, contributing to the post-2015 development agenda and the Zero Hunger Challenge. International Mountain Day 2014

Organized under the theme 'Mountain Farming,' the 2014 International Mountain Day will focus on highlighting the rapid transformation of family farming in mountain regions driven by population growth and economic globalization, among other factors. 2015 Zaragoza Conference

The UN-Water International Zaragoza Conference in January 2015 will consider the theme "Water and Sustainable Development" and will focus on how to bring the post-2015 international agenda on water and sanitation into action. The 15th Regular Session of the Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (CGRFA 15) is expected to convene in 2015. The Commission provides the only permanent forum for governments to discuss and negotiate matters specifically relevant to biological diversity for food and agriculture. The Commission aims to reach international consensus on policies for the sustainable use and conservation of genetic resources for food and agriculture and the fair and equitable sharing of benefits derived from their use.

Ninth Ad Hoc Open-ended Informal Working Group to Study Issues Relating to the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Marine BBNJ

This meeting of the Ad Hoc Open-ended Informal Working Group to study issues relating to the conservation and sustainable use of marine biological diversity beyond areas of national jurisdiction (BBNJ) is the third of three meetings (April 2014, June 2014 and January 2015) that the UN General Assembly (UNGA) requested be convened. The meetings aim to make recommendations to the UNGA on the scope, parameters and feasibility of an international instrument under the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). These three meetings are expected to result in a summary of discussions that will be submitted to the President of the UNGA, and are anticipated to contribute to a decision to be taken at the 69th Session of the UNGA on the development of a new international instrument under UNCLOS.

UNCCD 3rd Scientific Conference

The UNCCD 3rd Scientific Conference will take place from 9-12 March 2015, in Mexico, and will address the theme "Combating desertification, land degradation and drought for poverty reduction and sustainable development – the contribution of science, technology, traditional knowledge and practices”. It will be held during the fourth special session of the Committee on Science and Technology (CST S-4) of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD). The Scientific Conference aims harness a wide range of scientific, local and traditional knowledge to achieve poverty reduction and sustainable development in areas susceptible to desertification, land degradation and drought. 3rd Global Soil Week

The 3rd Global Soil Week will provide a platform for discussions on issues related to soils and land, and facilitate the emergence of new initiatives and strengthen existing ones. The Week will be composed of workshops on topics that have emerged since the 1st Global Soil Week: carbon land management; soils and water; land rehabilitation; cities; land governance; economics of land and land degradation; land degradation neutral world (LDNW); soil and biomass for non-food purposes; and soils and food security. In addition, the agenda will include dialogues organized by various stakeholders, and lunch break dialogues with presentations on activities, ideas, research and experiences relating to soils and land. The event is hosted by the Global Soil Forum at the Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies (IASS), in partnership with several UN agencies, intergovernmental and international organizations and German government agencies.

Second Meeting of the UN Environment Assembly

The UN Environment Assembly (UNEA) will convene for the second time in 2016. The UNEA of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) represents the highest level of governance of international environmental affairs in the UN system. The Rio+20 conference agreed in June 2012 to strengthen and upgrade UNEP through measures including universal membership of its Governing Council and ensuring the active participation of all relevant stakeholders. In March 2013, the 67th session of the UN General Assembly changed the designation of the Governing Council of UNEP to become UNEA, reflecting the intention to elevate its status.

Expo 2017: Future Energy

The international Expo 2017 will take place in Astana, Kazakhstan, and will aim to promote the most appropriate and viable sustainability-driven action plans to address the possibilities of future energy. The Expo, organized under the theme 'Future Energy' and the sub-theme 'Solutions for Tackling Humankind's Greatest Challenge,' will address future energy from several perspectives, including: exploration of stategies, programmes and technologies for sustainable energy development; promotion of energy security and efficiency; and the encouragement of renewable energy use. Venues for the World's Fairs and their themes are determined by taking into account political, economic, geographical and cultural contexts. The history of World's Fairs extends back to “the Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of all Nations,” which took place in London in 1851.
