51st Meeting of the GEF Council

The Global Environment Facility (GEF) Council meets twice a year to approve new projects with global environmental benefits in the GEF's focal areas of biodiversity, climate change mitigation, chemicals and waste, international waters, land degradation, and sustainable forest management; and in the GEF's integrated approach programs on sustainable cities, taking deforestation out of commodity chains, and sustainability and resilience for food security in Sub-Saharan Africa. The Council also provides guidance to the GEF Secretariat and Agencies. The 25-27 October GEF Council meeting will be preceded on 24 October by a consultation with civil society organizations (CSOs) at the same location. On 27 October the Council will convene as the 21st meeting of the Least Developed Countries Fund (LDCF) and Special Climate Change Fund (SCCF) also at the same location.

Seventh Regional 3R Forum in Asia and the Pacific

The Regional Forum is organized and co-hosted by the UN Centre for Regional Development (UNCRD). The Forum is intended to serve as a framework for 3R (reduce, reuse, recycle) policy dialogue among high-level government representatives from Asia-Pacific countries, city mayors and administrators and other professionals, as well as technical assistance for country projects, and information sharing and networking for the promotion of 3R policies in Asia and the Pacific.

Fifth Meeting of the Working Group of the Parties to the Protocol on PRTRs

The Working Group will review the progress in implementing the 2015-2017 work programme, including compliance and reporting mechanisms, promotion, capacity building, and financial matters, discuss the work programme for 2018–2021, and discuss preparations for the next session of the Meeting of the Parties (MOP), including a draft joint declaration with the Parties to the Aarhus Convention.

First Meeting of the SAICM Intersessional Process

Through its Resolution IV/4, the fourth session of the International Conference on Chemicals Management (ICCM4) held in September 2015 decided to initiate an intersessional process to prepare recommendations regarding the Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management (SAICM) and the sound management of chemicals and waste beyond 2020 for consideration by ICCM5, expected to be held in 2020. ICCM4 decided that the intersessional process should include, in principle, two meetings before the third meeting of the SAICM Open-ended Working Group (OEWG3) (to be held in 2018 or early 2019) and another between OEWG3 and ICCM5. The first intersessional meeting is expected to focus in part on a discussion of an independent evaluation of SAICM for 2006-2015.

Basel Convention COP13, Rotterdam Convention COP8 and Stockholm Convention COP8

The Thirteenth Meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP13) to the Basel Convention, the Eighth Meeting of the COP (COP8) to the Rotterdam Convention and the Eighth Meeting of the COP (COP8) to the Stockholm Convention will convene back-to-back to discuss issues for each Convention, and joint issues shared among the Conventions. First Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Minamata Convention on Mercury [tentative]

The First Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Minamata Convention on Mercury (COP1) of the Minamata Convention will be held within one year of entry into force of the Convention, and is thus expected to take place in September 2017. Dates will be confirmed by the interim secretariat.
