UN World Data Forum

The first UN World Data Forum (WDF) will be hosted by Statistics South Africa. It is expected to bring together public and private measurements experts, statistical producers, information system specialists, and users, as well as all other key stakeholders to discuss data for sustainable development. Organized by the UN High-level Group for Partnership, Coordination and Capacity-Building for Statistics for the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (HLG), the UN WDF is intended to serve as a platform for intensifying cooperation on data for sustainable development with multiple stakeholders, including information technology professionals, geospatial information managers, data scientists, data users, and members from civil society. Organization of a World Forum on Sustainable Development Data was one of the main recommendations of the UN Secretary-General's Independent Expert and Advisory Group on Data Revolution for Sustainable Development. UNFF Working Group and Special Session

The back-to-back meetings of the United Nations Forum on Forests' (UNFF) Working Group and Special Session are due to negotiate and endorse the UNFF Strategic Plan for 2017-2030 and the Quadrennial Programme of Work (4POW) for 2017-2020, based on recommendations submitted by the Open-ended Intergovernmental Ad Hoc Expert Group (AHEG) on the International Arrangement on Forests Strategic Plan.

Global Forum for Food and Agriculture (GFFA 2017)

The Global Forum for Food and Agriculture (GFFA) focuses on questions concerning the future of the global agri-food industry. It gives representatives from the worlds of politics, business, science and civil society an opportunity to share ideas and enhance understanding on a selected topic of current agricultural policy. The GFFA 2017 will consider the theme, 'Agriculture and Water – Key to Feeding the World,' and will take place in Berlin from 19-21 January 2017.

ECOSOC President's Retreat

The President of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) will convene a retreat to advance preparations for the 2017 session of the Council. The retreat also aims to foster synergies between the various fora taking place under the auspices of ECOSOC, including the UN High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF), the ECOSOC Forum on Financing for Development Follow-up (FFD Forum) and the Multi-stakeholder Forum on Science, Technology and Innovation for the SDGs.

Informal High-level Dialogue of UNGA on the Sustaining Peace Agenda

In recognition of the fundamental interlinkages between the 2030 Agenda and Sustaining Peace, UN General Assembly (UNGA) President Peter Thomson will convene a High-level Dialogue titled 'Building Sustainable Peace for All: Synergies between the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustaining Peace Agenda,' with the participation of the President of the UN Security Council, the President of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), and the Chair of the UN Peacebuilding Commission (PBC). The meeting seeks to promote UN system-wide coherence in addressing the two Agenda in view of Sustainable Development Goal 16 (SDG 16) on peace, justice and strong institutions. The Sustaining Peace agenda has been agreed by the UNGA and the UN Security Council. It seeks to broaden the UN’s peacebuilding engagement beyond post-conflict settings, and to bring a "sustaining peace" perspective to all the UN’s work across peace and security, human rights, and development. The dialogue will include an opening session, a high-level segment, an interactive panel discussion on 'Taking a comprehensive approach to sustainable development and sustaining peace,' and three workshops on: Empowering women, girls and youth for peace and sustainable development; Addressing the root causes of conflict for peace and sustainable development; and Strengthening transparent, inclusive and accountable institutions for peace and sustainable development. The UN Non-Governmental Liaison Service (UN-NGLS) is facilitating a process to identify civil society speakers and other civil society attendees.

CGRFA 16

The sixteenth regular session of the Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (CGRFA) of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the UN is expected to address a series of sectoral and cross-sectoral issues of relevance to genetic resources for food and agriculture. CGRFA 16 will be preceded by a Special Event on 28 January.

Consultation on Indigenous Peoples’ Participation at UN

In resolution 70/232 on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, the UN General Assembly (UNGA) requested the President to: conduct consultations with Member States, indigenous peoples, and existing relevant UN mechanisms on the possible measures to enable the participation of indigenous peoples at the UN; and prepare a compilation of views presented during the consultations to form the basis for a draft text to be finalized and adopted by the UNGA during its following session, UNGA 71. On 8 July 2016, President Mogens Lykketoft circulated a compilation of views expressed during the UNGA 70 consultations, including concrete recommendations on the way forward. On 28 September 2016, President Peter Thomson (UNGA 71) confirmed the reappointment of Kai Saner, Permanent Representative of Finland, Martha Ama Akyaa Pobee, Permanent Representative of Ghana, Claire Winfield Ngamihi Charters, Pacific Region, and James Anaya, North America Region, as advisers to assist him with the consultation process. Per the indicative road map issued by the advisers of the consultation process, four consultations will take place in the winter and Spring of 2016. The consultation process is expected to result in a draft resolution that should then be finalized and adopted by the UNGA. The second in the series of four is expected to convene on 30 January-1 February 2017.

2017 ECOSOC Youth Forum

The sixth UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) Youth Forum will consider the theme, 'The Role of Youth in Poverty Eradication and Promoting Prosperity in a Changing World'. The Forum will have opening and closing plenary sessions with representatives from youth organizations, high-level keynote speakers, as well as thematic and regional breakout sessions. It will include a Ministerial Roundtable that could feature national reviews of progress on youth development and youth engagement in the context of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Young people will also be encouraged to make individual and group commitments for action for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). All plenary sessions will feature SDG Youth Advocates and YouTubers, in interactive and dynamic discussions to leverage their influence and global reach to inspire concrete actions to promote SDG implementation. The Forum will seek to reflect a diversity of youth organizations and include a balanced representation of youth from developed and developing countries. The outcome of the meeting is expected to be an ECOSOC Presidential Statement that will be transmitted for consideration to the 2017 session of the ECOSOC High-level Segment and the High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF). An informal summary of the event is also expected. The meeting should be webcast and participants should be able to pose questions via social media through Facebook and Twitter. The annual ECOSOC Youth Forum is a platform where young people can contribute to policy discussions at the UN through collective ideas, solutions and innovations. Hashtag: #YOUTH2030

55th Session of Commission for Social Development

The 2017 session of the Commission for Social Development (CSocD 55) will address the theme, 'Strategies for eradicating poverty to achieve sustainable development for all', which is the priority theme for the 2017-2018 review and policy cycle of the Commission. The session will be preceded by a Civil Society Forum, on 30-31 January 2017 at UN Headquarters, hosted jointly by the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs' (DESA) Division for Social Policy and Development (DSPD), the NGO Committee for Social Development and Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES).

First Meeting of the SAICM Intersessional Process

Through its Resolution IV/4, the fourth session of the International Conference on Chemicals Management (ICCM4) held in September 2015 decided to initiate an intersessional process to prepare recommendations regarding the Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management (SAICM) and the sound management of chemicals and waste beyond 2020 for consideration by ICCM5, expected to be held in 2020. ICCM4 decided that the intersessional process should include, in principle, two meetings before the third meeting of the SAICM Open-ended Working Group (OEWG3) (to be held in 2018 or early 2019) and another between OEWG3 and ICCM5. The first intersessional meeting is expected to focus in part on a discussion of an independent evaluation of SAICM for 2006-2015.

40th Session of the IFAD Governing Council

The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) Governing Council is IFAD's highest decision-making body. The Council convenes annually at Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) headquarters in Rome, Italy. Along with other items, the 40th session of the Council will appoint IFAD's new President, who is expected to take office in April 2017.

Preparatory Meeting for UN Conference on SDG 14

The UN General Assembly (UNGA) will hold a preparatory meeting for the UN Conference to Support the Implementation of SDG 14 (Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development), under the leadership of co-facilitators Alvaro Mendonca Moura, Permanent Representative of Portugal to the UN, and Burhan Gafoor, Permanent Representative of Singapore to the UN. The meeting will discuss the elements of the expected outcome document, a ‘Call for Action’, and the themes for the partnership dialogues.

World Ocean Summit 2017

This Economist event will be the fourth World Ocean Summit, and will discuss how to finance a sustainable ocean economy, including consideration of the types of investment frameworks and capital necessary to bring the blue economy to scale. The event will convene over 360 global leaders from government, industry, multilateral organizations, the scientific community, and civil society to address the risks and opportunities involved in pursuing a blue economy approach and showcase examples of businesses, governments, scientists and others who have successfully aligned economic activity with sustainable management of the oceans. Additional discussion topics include: the global demand for seafood over time; the economic case for addressing marine pollution; and areas for new investments in the ocean economy.

UNESCO Week for Peace and Sustainable Development

The UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) will hold a week-long event for Peace and Sustainable Development, on the theme of 'The Role of Education'. Discussions will address two UNESCO programmes, Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and Global Citizenship Education (GCED), and their practical contribution to achieving SDG target 4.7 (By 2030, ensure that all learners acquire the knowledge and skills needed to promote sustainable development, including, among others, through education for sustainable development and sustainable lifestyles, human rights, gender equality, promotion of a culture of peace and non-violence, global citizenship and appreciation of cultural diversity and of culture’s contribution to sustainable development). The Week will focus on the issue of teachers and teacher training, and highlight best practices in the field of ESD and GCED.

Fifth Mediterranean Forest Week

The Fifth Mediterranean Forest Week is dedicated to forests and landscape restoration in the Mediterranean basin. It aims to strengthen exchanges and synergies between global stakeholders in the restoration of Mediterranean forests and landscapes, to help achieve Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 15 (Life on Land) and other globally agreed targets related to forest restoration, and facilitate the adaptation of Mediterranean forest landscapes to climate change. It is hosted by Morocco and co-organized by the Committee on Mediterranean Forestry Questions - Silva Mediterranea of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the Global Mechanism of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), the World Bank, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and other partners.

Global Symposium on Soil Organic Carbon

The Global Symposium on Soil Organic Carbon (GSOC17) will be a scientific meeting, with 300-500 participants representing all geographical regions and countries of the world. The Global Symposium on Soil Organic Carbon will contribute to the efforts of ending hunger and malnutrition, climate change adaptation, reversing land degradation, and overall sustainable development while linking sustainable soil management and climate change mitigation and adaptation.

26th Meeting of the UN-HABITAT Governing Council [tentative]

The Governing Council (GC) serves as the decision-making body for the UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT) and approves UN-HABITAT's biennial work programme and budget. The GC is also responsible for setting UN-HABITAT's policies by developing and promoting policy objectives, priorities and guidelines on existing and planned programmes of work on human settlements. The GC meets biennially and reports to the UN General Assembly (UNGA) through the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).

50th Session of the Commission on Population and Development

The 50th session of the Commission on Population and Development (CPD) will consider the theme, 'Changing population age structures and sustainable development'. The meeting will discuss actions for the further implementation of the Programme of Action of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) at the global, regional and national levels, and the Secretariat's future programme of work. In addition, UN General Assembly (UNGA) President Peter Thomson intends to convene key partners for a side event on SDG 3 (Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages). The Commission is composed of 47 UN Member States elected by the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) on the basis of geographic distribution. Since 1994, the Commission has met annually.

High-Level UNGA Event on Sustainable Finance

The President of the UN General Assembly (UNGA), Peter Thomson, announced that his office will hold a High-Level event on Sustainable Finance in April 2017. This will be part of the ongoing efforts of the UNGA President's office to drive implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) throughout the 71st session of the UNGA.

UNGA Meeting on Tackling Inequalities [tentative]

The President of the UN General Assembly (UNGA), Peter Thomson, is organizing a meeting on tackling inequalities prior to the World Bank Spring Meetings in 2017, with a particular focus on social, economic and political inclusion, in collaboration with the Commission on Business and Sustainable Development and others. The World Bank Spring Meetings will take place on 21-23 April 2017, in Washington, DC, US.

The 2017 Spring Meetings of the World Bank Group and International Monetary Fund (IMF) will take place from 21-23 April, in Washington, DC, US. The Meetings bring together central bankers, ministers of finance and development, private sector executives, civil society, and academics to discuss issues of global concern, including the world economic outlook, global financial stability, poverty eradication, jobs and growth, economic development, and aid effectiveness. The Meetings also offer an opportunity for civil society organizations to share their views and interact with policymakers in a global setting.

Global Infrastructure Forum 2017

The 2017 session of the Global Infrastructure Forum will take place during the 2017 Spring Meetings of the World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF), with its organization led jointly by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the European Investment Bank (EIB). The outcome is expected to be a Chair’s statement, to be negotiated by the multilateral development banks (MDBs) and other partners.

16th Session of the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues

The 16th session of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (PFII) will take place in 2017, which is the ten-year anniversary of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP). The PFII is an advisory body to the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), established in 2000. It has the mandate to discuss indigenous issues related to economic and social development, culture, the environment, education, health and human rights, and focuses on specific themes when it convenes for ten days every year. The 16th session will follow up on the recommendations of previous PFII sessions with regard to indigenous youth, and the empowerment of indigenous women, and will discuss measures taken to implement UNDRIP. PFII 15, in 2016, focused on the theme, 'Indigenous peoples: conflict, peace and resolution'.

16th Session of UN Committee of Experts on Public Administration (CEPA)

During its 16th session, the UN Committee of Experts on Public Administration (CEPA) will consider the theme 'Ensuring effective implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): leadership, action and means'. The Committee is expected to discuss: local authorities and communities needs for implementing the SDGs; institutional leadership and arrangements and the SDGs; principles of effective governance; and strategies for integrated action to achieve poverty eradication. It should also discuss the provisional agenda for the 17th session of the Committee and adopt the report of its 16th session. CEPA was established by the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) in its resolution 2001/45, and is comprised of 24 members who meet annually at UN Headquarters in New York. The Committee is responsible for supporting the work of ECOSOC concerning the promotion and development of public administration and governance among UN Member States.

Consultation on Indigenous Peoples’ Participation [tentative]

In resolution 70/232 on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, the UN General Assembly (UNGA) requested the President to: conduct consultations with Member States, indigenous peoples, and existing relevant UN mechanisms on the possible measures to enable the participation of indigenous peoples at the UN; and prepare a compilation of views presented during the consultations to form the basis for a draft text to be finalized and adopted by the UNGA during its following session, UNGA 71. On 8 July 2016, President Mogens Lykketoft circulated a compilation of views expressed during the UNGA 70 consultations, including concrete recommendations on the way forward. On 28 September 2016, President Peter Thomson (UNGA 71) confirmed the reappointment of Kai Saner, Permanent Representative of Finland, Martha Ama Akyaa Pobee, Permanent Representative of Ghana, Claire Winfield Ngamihi Charters, Pacific Region, and James Anaya, North America Region, as advisers to assist him with the consultation process. Per the indicative road map issued by the advisers of the consultation process, four consultations will take place in the winter and Spring of 2016. The consultation process is expected to result in a draft resolution that should then be finalized and adopted by the UNGA. The fourth in the series of four is expected to convene on 24 April-5 May 2017, during the Permanent Forum (specific dates to be confirmed, depending on the schedule of the Forum).

UNECE Regional Forum on Sustainable Development (RFSD) 2017

The UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) is organizing the Regional Forum on Sustainable Development back-to-back with the UNECE Anniversary session. The event will contribute to regional follow-up and review through a discussion of reviews in UNECE Sectoral Committees and other UNECE inputs, reviews and inputs from regional UN systems, other regional and international organizations and civil society and other stakeholders. The conclusions of the review will be forwarded as a contribution from the UNECE region to the 2017 High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF).

Dresden Nexus Conference 2017

Held every two years, the Dresden Nexus Conference brings together individuals and organizations from diverse research disciplines, national and international organizations and actors who apply a "Nexus Approach" to resource management. The Marine Environment and UN Sustainable Development Goal 14

2017 Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction

This conference will focus on how to reduce loss of life and economic losses from disasters caused by manmade and natural hazards. Several thousand representatives of governments, international organizations and civil society are expected to attend the event, which comes at a time when millions are food insecure because of a very strong El Niño. The conference aims to encourage countries and others to go beyond disaster management to addressing the risks that lead to greater losses from disasters, including poverty, unplanned urbanization, environmental degradation and poor risk governance. The Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction (GPDRR), which was established in 2007 and takes place every two years, provides the opportunity for exchanging information, discussing the latest developments and knowledge, and building partnerships across sectors. It aims to improve DRR implementation through better communication and coordination amongst stakeholders, and build resilience. The Global Platform is organized by the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR), which is also the secretariat of the International Strategy for Disaster Reduction.

It also reviews and approves the work program (projects submitted for approval). G20 Summit

The G20 Summit under the German Presidency will be held on 7-8 July in Hamburg, Germany. The 20 Heads of State and Government and top-level representatives of international organizations will gather under the motto of Germany's G20 Presidency: 'Shaping an interconnected world'. A main concern of the Presidency is to make progress on realizing the goals of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Paris Agreement on climate change. High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) 2017

The fifth High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF), convening under the auspices of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), will take place from 10-19 July 2017, including a three-day ministerial meeting of the Forum on 17-19 July. The theme of the 2017 session will be 'Eradicating poverty and promoting prosperity in a changing world,' as decided in UN General Assembly (UNGA) resolution A/70/299. The set of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to be reviewed in depth will be: Goal 1 (End poverty in all its forms everywhere); Goal 2 (End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture); Goal 3 (Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages); Goal 5 (Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls); Goal 9 (Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation); Goal 14 (Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development); and Goal 17 (Strengthen the means of implementation and revitalize the Global Partnership for Sustainable Development), which will be considered each year.

2017 Global Forum for Responsible Management Education - 7th PRME Assembly

UNCCD COP 13

The thirteen session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 13) to the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), along with the sixteenth session of the Committee for the Review of the Implementation of the Convention (CRIC 16) and the thirteenth session of the Committee on Science and Technology (CST 13), will convene in Ordos, Inner Mongolia, China, from 4-15 September 2017. A high-level segment is scheduled to take place from 11-12 September 2017. At COP 13, UNCCD Parties are expected to adopt the Strategic Framework that will guide action under the Convention from 2018-2030, among other decisions.

Fourth International Marine Protected Areas Congress (IMPAC4)

The Fourth International Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) Congress will take place under the theme, ‘MPAs: Bringing the ocean and people together’. The Congress will convene MPA scientists and practitioners to discuss a range of topics relevant to MPAs, including conservation, ecology, fisheries, climate change, monitoring, enforcement and management tools, and communications and education. 4th International Conference on Research for Development

The Fourth International Conference on Research for Development (ICRD 2017) will address the theme, 'Evidence.Engagement.Policies,' focusing on four questions: How can we ensure that health, food systems, and sustainable agricultural systems mutually reinforce one another to better support people’s livelihoods and well-being; How can we deal with environmental sustainability while achieving economic development; How can we promote inclusive, equitable, and peaceful societies; and How can we ensure that partnerships are transformative. ICRD 2017 will be co-hosted by the Swiss Programme for Research on Global Issues for Development (r4d programme, www.r4d.ch) – a joint funding initiative of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) – and by the University of Bern’s Centre for Development and Environment (CDE, www.cde.unibe.ch). The conference seeks contributions that will enhance transformations towards sustainable development in countries of Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Conference contributions should facilitate knowledge stewardship in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and should improve our understanding of how evidence can support policies for sustainable development. Researchers, policymakers, and societal partners are jointly called upon to share sound and timely knowledge from their fields of expertise, and to engage in discussing synergies and trade-offs with other SDGs linked to their topics. Leading researchers, policymakers, and societal partners are invited to propose sessions that reflect the conference themes by 24 January 2017.

Ninth World Urban Forum

The ninth World Urban Forum (WUF9), convened by the UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), will bring together thousands of stakeholders to share practices and knowledge on how cities are built, planned and managed. WUF9 participants will include representatives of: national, regional and local governments; non-governmental organizations; community-based organizations; research institutions and academies; the private sector; development finance institutions; foundations; the media; and UN organizations and other international agencies. The WUF's key objectives include: advocating for and raising awareness on sustainable urban development; advancing knowledge on sustainable urbanization through debates, and exchange of experiences and best practices; and coordinating and cooperating within and between different constituencies towards advancing and implementing the Habitat Agenda. WUF is the biggest major international event to address human settlements, including rapid urbanization and its impact on cities, communities, economies, climate change and policies. It meets every two years, and participation has increased to around 22,000 attendees from all over the world. WUF9 will be the first Forum to meet after the post-2015 development agenda process and the UN Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development – Habitat III in 2016.

Third World Statistics Day

The Third World Statistics Day is expected to take place in October 2020. In Resolution 69/282, the UN General Assembly (UNGA) agreed to celebrate World Statistics Day on 20 October, every five years.
