African Economic Conference 2016

Jointly organized by the African Development Bank (AfDB), the UN Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) and the UN Development Programme (UNDP), the African Economic Conference (AEC) 2016 will convene under the theme, 'Feeding Africa: Towards Agro-Allied Industrialization for Inclusive Growth'. Participants will consider the latest empirical evidence on Africa's agricultural transformation and discuss how to leverage agro-industrialization for food security and inclusive growth in Africa. The conference aims to provide a platform for critical thinking on how policy-makers, development partners, the private sector, civil society organizations and the academia should support the planning and implementation of these industrialization strategies.

World Soil Day 2016

World Soil Day has been commemorated annually since 2013, following the adoption of a Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) Council resolution calling on the wider UN System to recognize 5 December as World Soil Day and to institutionalize its observance. The resolution was subsequently adopted by the 68th UN General Assembly. World Soil Day 2016 will feature celebrations at global, regional and national levels under the theme of ‘Soils and pulses, a symbiosis for life'.

Open Government Partnership Global Summit

The Open Government Partnership (OGP) Global Summit will bring together representatives from governments, civil society, academia and international organizations to share experiences and advance an open government global agenda. The OGP is a multilateral initiative that brings together 69 member states, civil society representatives and other stakeholders to promote and reinforce open, transparent government through participation, public integrity and action against corruption and access to technology to foster democracy, promote innovation and stimulate progress. France is serving as the Lead Chair on the OGP steering committee from October 2016 and will host the Global Summit. The Summit's agenda will be determined based on an open call for proposals from the open government community and will be announced in September 2016.

Fourth Meeting of the Task Force on the Water-Food-Energy Ecosystems Nexus

This meeting will discuss, plan and provide guidance to the implementation of activities on the water-food-energy-ecosystems nexus under the programme of work for 2016-2018 of the Convention on the Protection and Use of Transboundary Watercourses and International Lakes (Water Convention). More specifically, it will: review the status of ongoing basin assessments; discuss possible follow-up actions to assessments already undertaken; and reflect on knowledge gaps and strategic directions for future nexus work under the Water Convention. The Task Force meeting will be held back to back with the Global Workshop on Assessments of the Water-Food-Energy-Ecosystems Nexus and Response Measures in Transboundary Basins taking place from 6-7 December 2016. The meeting is convening under the leadership of the Government of Finland, with the support from the Secretariat of the UN Economic Commission for Europe.

9th Global Forum on Migration and Development Summit

The 9th Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD) Summit will take place in Dhaka, Bangladesh. The Global Forum on Migration and Development is an initiative of United Nations Member States to address the migration and development interconnections in practical and action-oriented ways. It is an informal, non-binding, voluntary and government-led process that marks the culmination of more than a decade of international dialogue on the growing importance of the linkages between migration and development.

International Mountain Day 2016

International Mountain Day 2016 will focus on the theme ‘Mountain Cultures: Celebrating Diversity and Strengthening Identity'. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) will lead global observance events that aim to create awareness about the importance of mountains to life, highlight the opportunities and constraints in mountain development, and build alliances that will bring positive change to mountain peoples and environments. In 2002, the UN General Assembly designated 11 December as International Mountain Day to foster understanding and respect for the traditional knowledge and techniques of mountain communities that are key to managing and enhancing fragile mountain ecosystems. Events in 2016 will also highlight ways to boost livelihoods in mountain areas through a focus on high value sustainable products and tourism. #WeLoveMountains

Transforming Transportation 2017

Transforming Transportation is the annual conference co-hosted by the World Bank and EMBARQ, the urban mobility initiative of WRI Ross Center for Sustainable Cities. The event convenes leading transport and urban development experts from national and local governments, multilateral development banks, foundations, civil society, research institutions, and businesses from around the world. At Transforming Transportation, they share the latest experiences, information, and best practices around sustainable transport.

UN World Data Forum

The first UN World Data Forum (WDF) will be hosted by Statistics South Africa. It is expected to bring together public and private measurements experts, statistical producers, information system specialists, and users, as well as all other key stakeholders to discuss data for sustainable development. Organized by the UN High-level Group for Partnership, Coordination and Capacity-Building for Statistics for the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (HLG), the UN WDF is intended to serve as a platform for intensifying cooperation on data for sustainable development with multiple stakeholders, including information technology professionals, geospatial information managers, data scientists, data users, and members from civil society. Organization of a World Forum on Sustainable Development Data was one of the main recommendations of the UN Secretary-General's Independent Expert and Advisory Group on Data Revolution for Sustainable Development. UNFF Working Group and Special Session

The back-to-back meetings of the United Nations Forum on Forests' (UNFF) Working Group and Special Session are due to negotiate and endorse the UNFF Strategic Plan for 2017-2030 and the Quadrennial Programme of Work (4POW) for 2017-2020, based on recommendations submitted by the Open-ended Intergovernmental Ad Hoc Expert Group (AHEG) on the International Arrangement on Forests Strategic Plan.

World Ocean Summit 2017

This Economist event will be the fourth World Ocean Summit, and will discuss how to finance a sustainable ocean economy, including consideration of the types of investment frameworks and capital necessary to bring the blue economy to scale. The event will convene over 360 global leaders from government, industry, multilateral organizations, the scientific community, and civil society to address the risks and opportunities involved in pursuing a blue economy approach and showcase examples of businesses, governments, scientists and others who have successfully aligned economic activity with sustainable management of the oceans. Additional discussion topics include: the global demand for seafood over time; the economic case for addressing marine pollution; and areas for new investments in the ocean economy.

Fifth Mediterranean Forest Week

The Fifth Mediterranean Forest Week is dedicated to forests and landscape restoration in the Mediterranean basin. It aims to strengthen exchanges and synergies between global stakeholders in the restoration of Mediterranean forests and landscapes, to help achieve Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 15 (Life on Land) and other globally agreed targets related to forest restoration, and facilitate the adaptation of Mediterranean forest landscapes to climate change. It is hosted by Morocco and co-organized by the Committee on Mediterranean Forestry Questions - Silva Mediterranea of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the Global Mechanism of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), the World Bank, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and other partners.

16th Session of the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues

The 16th session of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (PFII) will take place in 2017, which is the ten-year anniversary of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP). The PFII is an advisory body to the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), established in 2000. It has the mandate to discuss indigenous issues related to economic and social development, culture, the environment, education, health and human rights, and focuses on specific themes when it convenes for ten days every year. The 16th session will follow up on the recommendations of previous PFII sessions with regard to indigenous youth, and the empowerment of indigenous women, and will discuss measures taken to implement UNDRIP. PFII 15, in 2016, focused on the theme, 'Indigenous peoples: conflict, peace and resolution'.

16th Session of UN Committee of Experts on Public Administration (CEPA)

During its 16th session, the UN Committee of Experts on Public Administration (CEPA) will consider the theme 'Ensuring effective implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): leadership, action and means'. The Committee is expected to discuss: local authorities and communities needs for implementing the SDGs; institutional leadership and arrangements and the SDGs; principles of effective governance; and strategies for integrated action to achieve poverty eradication. It should also discuss the provisional agenda for the 17th session of the Committee and adopt the report of its 16th session. CEPA was established by the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) in its resolution 2001/45, and is comprised of 24 members who meet annually at UN Headquarters in New York. The Committee is responsible for supporting the work of ECOSOC concerning the promotion and development of public administration and governance among UN Member States.

Dresden Nexus Conference 2017

The Institute for Integrated Management of Material Fluxes and of Resources of the University of the UN (UNU-FLORES), Technische Universität Dresden (TU Dresden) and the Leibniz Institute of Ecological Urban and Regional Development (IOER) will host the second biennial Dresden Nexus Conference (DNC) on a Nexus Approach to managing environmental resources for sustainable development. DNC2017 will focus on the theme, 'SDGs and the Nexus Approach: Monitoring and Implementation'. International researchers, practitioners and politicians will debate the sustainable use of environmental resources under conditions of planetary limits and growing demand. Conference stakeholders include the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), UN Environment Programme (UNEP), UN-Habitat, UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), multiple UNU Institutes, and international and research institutions such as the Global Water Partnership, the International Hydropower Association, the International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage, The International Water Management Institute, the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ), the Center for Development Research (ZEF), the Center for Environmental Systems Research, the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF) and the Sachsen State Ministry for Higher Education, Research and the Arts. The Marine Environment and UN Sustainable Development Goal 14

The 41st Annual Conference of the Center for Oceans Law and Policy will convene under the theme, ‘The Marine Environment and UN Sustainable Development Goal 14'. Ninth World Urban Forum

The ninth World Urban Forum (WUF9), convened by the UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), will bring together thousands of stakeholders to share practices and knowledge on how cities are built, planned and managed. WUF9 participants will include representatives of: national, regional and local governments; non-governmental organizations; community-based organizations; research institutions and academies; the private sector; development finance institutions; foundations; the media; and UN organizations and other international agencies. The WUF's key objectives include: advocating for and raising awareness on sustainable urban development; advancing knowledge on sustainable urbanization through debates, and exchange of experiences and best practices; and coordinating and cooperating within and between different constituencies towards advancing and implementing the Habitat Agenda. WUF is the biggest major international event to address human settlements, including rapid urbanization and its impact on cities, communities, economies, climate change and policies. It meets every two years, and participation has increased to around 22,000 attendees from all over the world. WUF9 will be the first Forum to meet after the post-2015 development agenda process and the UN Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development – Habitat III in 2016.

The Third World Statistics Day is expected to take place in October 2020. In Resolution 69/282, the UN General Assembly (UNGA) agreed to celebrate World Statistics Day on 20 October, every five years.
