Highlights for Thursday, 24 February 2011

Delegates at the GC-26/GMEF convened in the Committee of the Whole (COW) in the morning and early afternoon to approve decisions.

In the late afternoon, delegates met in plenary to approve reports of the ministerial consultations and the COW, including decisions approved by the COW.The Plenary adopted: 17 decisions, including on IEG, IPBES, south-south cooperation and chemicals management; the Report of the COW; and the Chair’s Summary of the Ministerial Consultations.

In closing, UNEP Executive Director Achim Steiner praised the “spirit of Rio” that delegates showed throughout the session. GC-26 President Rosa Aguilar Rivero gaveled the meeting to a close at 6.44 pm.

Highlights for Wednesday, 23 February 2011
GC-26/GMEF

Delegates at the 26th session of the GC-26/GMEF convened in the morning for ministerial consultations on IEG, and on coordination and cooperation within the UN system on environmental matters and state of the environment in the Committee of the Whole (COW).

The drafting group on IEG completed its work at mid-day. In the afternoon, delegates in the GMEF met in four ministerial roundtables on IEG.

The COW met into the night to discuss draft decisions on the state of the environment, strengthening international cooperation for environmental crisis response, and other agenda items. COW Chair Bratasida deferred discussion of several decisions, announcing the COW would convene on Thursday morning to complete its work.

Highlights for Tuesday, 22 February 2011
GC-26/GMEF

Delegates at the 26th session of the GC-26/GMEF convened in the morning for ministerial consultations on the green economy, and for the IEG, State of the Environment and the Budget and Programme of Work in the Committee of the Whole.

In the afternoon, delegates in the GMEF met in four ministerial roundtables on the green economy, while the Committee of the Whole (COW) continued discussions on the State of the Environment and the Coordination and Cooperation within the UN System.

The drafting group met throughout the day and into the night to consider the draft decision on IEG. The Budget and Programme of Work contact group met during the day. The contact group on chemicals and waste reported it anticipated completing its work by mid-day Wednesday.

Highlights for Monday, 21 February 2011
GC-26/GMEFDelegates at the 26th session of the UNEP Governing Council/Global Ministerial Environment Forum (GC-26/GMEF) convened in the morning for the opening ceremony, followed by consideration of organizational matters, and a policy statement by UNEP Executive Director, Achim Steiner.

In the afternoon, delegates convened for ministerial consultations on the green economy and international environmental governance (IEG).

The Committee of the Whole (COW) discussed organizational matters and began addressing draft decisions. The Contact Group on the Budget and Programme of Work met in the evening.
