Highlights for the Rio Conventions Pavilion - Thursday, 21 June 2012

The Rio Conventions Pavilion continued on Thursday, 21 June, celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Rio Conventions. The morning began with a breakfast of the Rio Convention COP Presidencies. Four panel sessions addressed: the launch of the pilot partnership on national implementation of synergies among the Rio Conventions; the launch of Mozambique’s Green Economy Roadmap; why the three Rio Conventions are critical to achieving poverty eradication; and how the UN system can better integrate environment within the development framework. The celebration concluded with a high-level reception in honor of the 20th Anniversary of the Conventions.

Highlights for the Rio Conventions Pavilion - Wednesday, 20 June 2012

The Rio Conventions Pavilion continued on Wednesday, 20 June, convening for Gender Mainstreaming Day. The event consisted of sessions on: mainstreaming gender in the three Rio Conventions - progress to date and way forward; linking research, policy and practice for gender-responsive action in forestry; political leadership and gender, and stakeholders panel; and a celebration of women’s leadership in sustainable development. A special event on the economics of sustainable development also took place.

The Rio Conventions Pavilion continued on Tuesday, 19 June 2012, convening for Financing Sustainable Development Day. The event consisted of two sessions on natural capital solutions - protected areas meeting global environmental challenges, and investing in natural capital in Africa, Asia and Latin America - partnerships, policies and investments. The day concluded with a pre-launch reception for Mozambique’s Green Economy Roadmap.

The Rio Conventions Pavilion continued on Sunday, 17 June 2012, focusing on the theme of securing healthy soils and stopping land degradation within a generation and global observance of the World Day to Combat Desertification. The event commenced with a high-level round table on what sustainable land and soil management can do to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Panels addressed: towards a zero net land and soil degradation world; the Global Soil Partnership; and the economics of land degradation. The day concluded with global observance of the World Day to Combat Desertification and a Land for Life Award reception.

Highlights for the Rio Conventions Pavilion - Saturday, 16 June 2012

The Rio Conventions Pavilion (RCP) continued on Saturday, 16 June 2012, focusing on Oceans. The event consisted of seven panels, a lunch celebrating 10 years of the Global Ocean Forum (GOF) and the 30th anniversary of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and a closing session presenting the outcomes of Oceans Day to the Rio+20 process.

Panel sessions included: renewing out political commitments - perspectives on Rio+20; scaling up integrated governance of the oceans; the living ocean - enhancing fisheries for food security, social and economic benefits; small island developing states (SIDS) and oceans - building resilience, enhancing social and economic benefits; climate change and ocean acidification; toward the blue economy and society - perspectives, experiences and initiatives; and moving forward.

Highlights for the Rio Conventions Pavilion - Wednesday, 13 June 2012

The Rio Conventions Pavilion (RCP) opened on 13 June 2012, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in parallel with the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD or Rio+20). The Pavilion opened with a side event presented by the International Institute for Sustainable Development Reporting Services (IISD-RS) on “Roads from Rio,” and followed with a reception sponsored by the Rio Conventions, the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), and the Global Environment Facility (GEF). The IISD-RS event launched the ENB Mobile app and the newly published book “The Roads from Rio: Lessons Learned from Twenty Years of Multilateral Environmental Negotiations.”
