The UN Conference for Sustainable Development (UNCSD) Subregional Preparatory Committee for the Atlantic, Indian Ocean, Mediterranean, and South China Sea (AIMS) Countries, convened for its first day in Mahe, Seychelles.
During the morning session, Sha Zukang, UNCSD-Rio+20 Secretary-General, welcomed delegates via video message, and expressed hope that SIDS would shed light on the changes necessary to improve institutional arrangements on the regional level. President of the Seychelles, James Michel, underscored the role of UNCSD in defining the blue economy, and stressed the need to use Rio+20 to claim back the concept of sustainable development. Delegates then heard presentations on Rio+20 and a background paper on the green economy for SIDS.
During the afternoon session participants heard a presentation by Jean-Paul Adam, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Seychelles, on a concept paper on improving the developmental options of SIDS. Delegates then heard presentations on institutional frameworks for sustainable development at the national, regional and international levels.
IISD RS will be producing a summary report of the meeting, which will be available on this site by Monday, 11 July 2011. |
