Highlights for Friday, 4 May 2012

The second round of “informal informal” consultations on the draft outcome document for the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD or Rio+20) ended at 7:15pm on Friday evening, 4 May. After the Working Groups had met throughout the day, Co-Chair Kim convened the closing plenary on Friday evening. While noting some progress, he acknowledged that a lot of work remained to be done, with about 400 paragraphs still bracketed and just 21 agreed ad referendum. He reported that the Bureau had met with Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon earlier in the day, and had discussed the large amount of work remaining. He indicated that the Secretary-General had told them that UNCSD was a once-in-a-generation opportunity. With this guidance in mind, the Bureau had decided to hold one more week of negotiations prior to Rio+20. These would take place at UN Headquarters in New York, from 29 May to 2 June. Thanking delegates for their hard work, he closed the meeting at 7:15pm.
