On
Thursday, 16 November, participants at the Global
Responsibility Founding Forum met for an afternoon opening
ceremony, two parallel discussion sessions, and an evening
reception for the official inauguration of Global
Responsibility. Javed Ahmad, Chief Executive
Officer of Global Responsibility, welcomed participants,
highlighted goals, and signaled the aim to offer a cost
effective state of the art service in corporate sustainability
reporting. Ulrika Wennberg, Business Development Director of
Global Responsibility, discussed past and future planned efforts
on sustainability reporting and the development of the Global
Responsibility Communication Platform. In
the first discussion session, Mats Hägerström, Global
Responsibility Sector Advisor, outlined the contents of the
Communication Platform, a web-based service for sustainability
reporting and stakeholder dialogue. In the second discussion
session, pioneer partner company representatives heard reports
on and discussed the status and direction of Platform technology
and the verification of Platform information.
During
the official inauguration of Global Responsibility, Stephen
Somerville, Reuters Foundation Trustee, introduced the
documentary film “The Global Youth Reporters from Sweden to
Jordan.” After the film, Chris Ryan, Director of the
International Institute for Industrial Environmental Economics (IIIEE),
noted that the first Global Environmental Youth Convention was
hosted by the IIIEE in 2000 and that the second Convention would
be held in Turin, Italy in 2002. Karl Lidgren, Chairman of
Global Responsibility, highlighted improved cooperation with
business and noted that the Global Responsibility Forum will
allow for a free flow of information for those wanting to
participate. Domingo Jiménez-Beltrán, Executive Director of
the European Environment Agency, underscored the EU’s progress
toward consistent sustainability policy-making, lauded placing
accountability and transparency in the hands of business, and
stressed the networking role of the Global Responsibility Forum. |
