Highlights for Tuesday, 12 March 2013

The Global Leadership Meeting on Population Dynamics and the Post-2015 UN Development Agenda convened in Dhaka, Bangladesh on Tuesday, 12 March 2013. The meeting was officially opened by Sheikh Hasina, the Prime Minister of Bangladesh, who stressed the need for employment creation for the youth, and partnerships and collaborations to attain the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

Participants then met in three working sessions on: setting the scene; high fertility, population growth and large youth populations; and international migration and human mobility.

In the session on setting the scene, participants discussed engaging the private sector to bring about new development goals, and the place for population dynamics within the post-2015 agenda.
On high fertility and population growth, they discussed the importance of sexual and reproductive health and rights, the need to empower women and the youth to make better reproductive health decisions, and the need to incorporate unfinished MDGs into the post-2015 development agenda. Discussing international migration and human mobility, participants highlighted ways to take advantage of the developmental opportunities associated with migration and mobility, as well as how to address the risks posed by these trends.

Martin Dahinden, Director-General, Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), stressed that discussions on the nature of the post-2015 development agenda should build on the Millennium Development Goals.
