Delegates met in a morning plenary to discuss process agents, the fixed-exchange-rate mechanism and the review of the non-compliance procedure. A contact group on illegal trade also met. Contact groups on the Multilateral Fund replenishment, interaction between the Implementation Committee and the Executive Committee, and ozone-depleting substance (ODS) destruction technologies convened in the afternoon. The Implementation Committee and a budget committee also met.

Pictures of the day

On the fixed-exchange-rate mechanism (FERM) for payment of contributions to the Multilateral Fund, the EU said Parties could consider using the Euro as the contributing currency. BRAZIL highlighted the FERM’s mixed results and called for consideration of how to compensate for losses if the trial period is extended.

INDIA expressed concerns with the US draft decision on process agents.

COSTA RICA opposed hastening the timing of communications between the Ozone Secretariat and Parties from three months to one-and-a-half months.

Delegates of the Republic of Korea at lunchtime

	Delegates at the end of the meeting of the Multilateral Fund replenishment group. The group discussed the G-77/CHINA proposal of increasing the level of the funding requirement for 2003-2005 to US$924.6 million. The G-77/CHINA explained the composition of its figure and the cost elements involved. Discussion will continue tomorrow in Plenary.

Report writer	New Zealand	Delegates have noticed the increasing participation of women in the meetings of the Montreal Protocol and the Vienna Convention.

Workshop:

Jack Juma, FAO consultant from Kenya, said that the farmer training and education programmes developed in his country raised awareness among methyl bromide users about the existence of effective alternatives.

Lilliana Chavez, methyl bromide field Consultant from Costa Rica, presented the programme ï¿½Training of trainers in Brazilï¿½, which is the prerequisite for an effective implementation of technology solutions in the field. She explained that the programme identified: methyl bromide users and alternatives available in the country or region; feasibility of alternatives; and main elements of integrated pest management.

Titus Gitao, Livewire Farms from Kenya, talked about his learning experience under the Farmerï¿½s Field Schools (FFS) related to methyl bromide alternatives to control soil-borne pests. He highlighted that he new alternatives for methyl bromide are more cost-efficiency and environmentally friendly, easier to apply and make carnations grow better.

Ricardo Labrada, FAO, introduced the UNEP/FAO Joint Side Event on ï¿½Farmers in Rome to tell their story on methyl bromide phase out. He described the history of the project and highlighted the project outcomes, including: training manual for extension workers; establishment of the Farmerï¿½s Field Schools; report on validated alternatives for methyl bromide in Latin America, North America, South Europe, Asia and Africa; and training of trainers in Brazil and Kenya.

After a day of productive work, Delegates went to the ï¿½Treatro dell Operaï¿½, for enjoying ï¿½Romanza: Una favola romanaï¿½.
