IPCC FINALIZES FOURTH ASSESSMENT REPORT

The session, which was held from 12-17 November 2007, in Valencia, Spain, finalized the Synthesis Report of the AR4, including a Summary for Policymakers of the Synthesis Report and a longer version of the Report. The 23-page final draft of the Summary for Policymakers contains sections on the observed changes in climate and their effects, the causes of change, projected climate change and its impacts, adaptation and mitigation options, and the long-term perspective. FIRST WORKING GROUP ON MERCURY CONVENES

OEWG Chair John RobertsBangkok, 17 November—The First Meeting of the Ad Hoc Open-ended Working Group (OEWG) to Review and Assess Measures to Address the Global Issue of Mercury has reviewed options for enhanced voluntary measures and new or existing international legal instruments on mercury. The meeting, which convened from 12-16 November 2007, in Bangkok, Thailand, agreed on intersessional work to be completed by the Secretariat in seven areas, including providing information on financial considerations of a free-standing convention, a new protocol to the Stockholm Convention and voluntary measures, and providing information on the ways in which sustainable technology transfer and support could be facilitated for global mercury control actions. IMoSEB INTERNATIONAL STEERING COMMITTEE INVITES FURTHER CONSIDERATION OF SCIENCE-POLICY INTERFACE

L-R: Co-Chairs Michel Loreau and Alfred Oteng-YeboahMontpellier, 18 November—The International Steering Committee of the Consultative Process Towards an International Mechanism of Scientific Expertise on Biodiversity (IMoSEB) has convened its final meeting, during which participants considered the outcomes of six regional consultations. Participants during the 15-17 November 2007 meeting in Montpellier, France, focused on the needs and options for an IMoSEB, as well as on how to improve the science-policy interface for biodiversity at all levels. In their final Statement, the International Steering Committee, while not recommending the formation of a new institution, invited donors and governments to provide support for the further and urgent consideration of the establishment of a science-policy interface, and invited the Executive Director of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and others to convene a meeting to consider establishing such an interface. ITTO COUNCIL COMMITS FUNDS FOR TROPICAL FORESTS

ITTC Chair Luis MacchiavelloYokohama, 11 November—The forty-third session of the International Tropical Timber Council (ITTC-43), which met from 5-10 November 2007, in Yokohama, Japan, has approved 15 projects and three pre-projects, and pledged US$ 5.6 million in project financing. The Council also approved the International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO) Biennial Work Programme (BWP) for 2008-2009, with a total budget of US$9.2 million. More.

EUROPEAN MINISTERS ADOPT RESOLUTIONS ON ROLE OF FORESTS IN WOOD-BASED BIO-ENERGY AND WATER PROTECTION

Jan Szyszko, Minister of the Environment, Poland, and Co-Chair of MCPFE 5Warsaw, 8 November—At the Fifth Ministerial Conference on the Protection of Forests in Europe (MCPFE 5), held from 5-7 November 2007 in Warsaw, Poland, European ministers responsible for forests adopted the Warsaw Declaration and Resolutions on “Forests, Wood and Energy” and “Forests and Water,” which focus on the role of forests in energy production, mitigating climate change and protecting water quality and quantity. Ministers also adopted Ministerial Statements on the Southern European forest fires and on declaring 20-24 October 2008 as the Pan-European Forest Week 2008. More.
