|

|
Madrid, 12 September—The
eighth meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP
8) to the UN Convention to Combat Desertification
(UNCCD) is negotiating proposals that could alter
its institutional structures. The meeting, which is
taking place from 3-14 September, in Madrid, Spain,
has already adopted a decision by its Committee on
Science and Technology (CST) that calls for future
sessions of the CST to be organized in a
conference-style format, organized by the CST Bureau
in consultation with a lead institution or
consortium with experience related to the selected
thematic focus.

| Interlaken,
8 September—The
first International Technical Conference on
Animal Genetic Resources for Food and
Agriculture has resulted in agreement on a
Global Plan of Action. The meeting, which
was held from 3-7 September, in Interlaken,
Switzerland, adopted both the Global Plan
and Interlaken Declaration, which stresses
the importance of animal genetic resources
and confirms the adoption of the Plan. The
successful completion of the Global Plan and
Interlaken Declaration provides a framework
for future action and represents the
beginning of a challenging long-term process
for countries and the FAO to sustainably
manage the world’s animal genetic resources
for food and agriculture.
