EXPERTS EXAMINE AVIAN FLU’S IMPACT ON ENVIRONMENT, BIRDS

A scientific seminar on avian influenza, the environment and migratory birds has reviewed the latest studies on the evolution and spread of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI), subtype H5N1, and its impact on wild birds and the wider environment. Experts focused on assessing risks of transmission and developing recommendations for policy makers and other stakeholders on the most appropriate actions and responses. IISDRS coverage.

PREPARATORY MEETING FOR 2006 ECOSOC HIGH-LEVEL SEGMENT HELD
4-5 April 2006 | UN headquarters, New York
The preparatory meeting for the 2006 High-level Segment of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) has convened at UN headquarters. The meeting focused on the High-level Segment’s theme of “Creating an environment at the national and international levels conducive to generating full and productive employment and decent work for all, and its impact on sustainable development.” IISDRS coverage.

  BASEL CONVENTION GROUP DISCUSSES FINANCING, SHIP DISMANTLING
3-7 April 2006 | Geneva, Switzerland
The Basel Convention’s Open-Ended Working Group has concluded its fifth session after focusing on financing, synergies, and ship dismantling. The Working Group was following up on decisions from the seventh meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP7) and preparing for COP8, which will take place from 27 November to 1 December 2006. CBD COP-8 FOCUSES ON PROCESS, FEW SUBSTANTIVE STEPS TAKEN

Attracting the largest number of participants in the Convention’s history, record stakeholder involvement and an unprecedented series of side events, the eighth Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity has concluded its work, although with few substantive results.
