OZONE MEETING AGREES ON
MULTILATERAL FUND, EXEMPTIONS

Senegal
Agreements have been struck on the Multilateral Fund, exemptions
for using ozone-depleting substances, and numerous other issues
during the seventh Conference of the Parties to the Vienna
Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer and seventeenth
Meeting of the Parties to the Montreal Protocol on Substances
that Deplete the Ozone Layer (COP-7/MOP-17). Despite a heavy
workload, delegates resolved all issues on the agenda, avoiding
the need for a third extraordinary MOP.

MONTREAL CLIMATE MEETING
FINALIZES KYOTO RULES, SECURES POST-2012 PROCESS

Montreal, Canada
Negotiators at the first meeting of the parties to the Kyoto
Protocol have succeeded in finalizing the treaty’s operational
“rule book,” including a package of decisions known as the
Marrakesh Accords. The meeting, which was widely hailed as a
success, also resulted in an agreement on a three-track process
under both the Protocol and the UN Climate Convention for
considering further action beyond 2012, when the Protocol’s
first commitment period ends.
