Climate change is emerging as the most far-reaching stressor on Arctic biodiversity, although contaminants, habitat change, industrial development and unsustainable harvest levels continue to have impacts as well. Adapting Decision Making for a Warming World

Climate change will test the ability of governments to lead as never before. Given the difficult trade-offs involved, and the scale of resources needed, the decisions that climate change imposes on governments are more political than technical. How decision makers and societies make these choices will determine how well they adapt to a changing climate, and shape the world our children and grandchildren inherit. More. |

Since the Conference of the Parties (COP) in Copenhagen in 2009, the witnesses for the prosecution—those who think the process has “lost the plot”—have been growing more vocal. The negotiations are stuck in an endless treadmill of repetitive meetings, they say. Morale within the process, which plummeted after Copenhagen only to lift a little in Cancun in December 2010, has sunk once more, say skeptical insiders. More. |

SBSTTA 15 Considers Indicators for Strategic Plan, Forwards Recommendations to COP
|
11 November 2011: The 15th meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA) of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) considered, among other items, a draft set of indicators for monitoring implementation of the CBD Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020 and measuring progress towards the 2020 Aichi Biodiversity Targets. SBSTTA 15 also adopted eight recommendations to be forwarded to the 11th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the CBD (COP 11). More. GEF Council Evaluates Reducing Fees, Discusses Private Sector Engagement

10 November 2011: During its 41st meeting, the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Council approved its work programme for the next year and initiated the search for a new CEO. The work programme includes 40 project concepts and nine programmatic approaches, including 11 for the biodiversity focal area, eight on climate change, two on international waters, 23 on land degradation, and five on persistent organic pollutants (POPs). INC 3 Concludes Negotiations on New Draft Text of Mercury Instrument

4 November 2011: At the third meeting of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee to Prepare a Global Legally Binding Instrument on Mercury (INC 3), delegates conducted negotiations on the new draft text (UNEP(DTIE)/Hg.INC.3/3) and requested the Secretariat to compile a revised draft text based on the plenary negotiations, the reports of the INC 3 contact groups, and the work of the Legal Group.
