Future Energy Summit 2011 Discusses Business, Technology and

Abu Dhabi,
21 January—World Future Energy
Summit (WFES) 2011 included a Summit
with 29 sessions, two exhibitions, a
Young Future Energy Leaders Programme,
approximately 90 roundtable discussions,
as well as numerous side events,
industry and investment seminars, and
corporate meetings. In addition, many
WFES participants attended the award
ceremony for the Zayed Future Energy
Prize for long-term vision and
leadership in renewable energy and
sustainability, which was awarded to
Vestas of Denmark.

Intersessional Meeting Discusses UNCSD Objectives and Themes |

New York,
12 January—In his summary of the
first Intersesssional Meeting leading to
the UN Conference on Sustainable
Development (UNCSD, also called Rio+20),
Conference Secretary-General Sha Zukang
highlighted that delegates’ key messages
included that: strong commitment to
development needs to be emphasized;
green economy should not be viewed as a
substitute to sustainable development;
more studies on green economy are
needed; the current institutional
framework needs to be strengthened by
improving coordination; and different
views exist regarding the best
architecture for sustainable
development.

ITTC
46 Agrees on Collaborative Initiative with CBD |
|
|
|
Yokohama, 19 December—The
46th session of the International Tropical
Timber Council (ITTC) and the associated
sessions of its four Committees concluded with
compromises on the Collaborative Initiative
between the International Tropical Timber
Organization (ITTO) and the Convention on
Biological Diversity to conserve tropical forest
biodiversity, and financial arrangements for
Council sessions outside of ITTO headquarters.
