WORLD FOOD SECURITY SUMMIT DISCUSSES CHALLENGES TO FOOD
SECURITY AND AGRICULTURE |

Rome,
19 November—At
the conclusion of the World Summit on
Food Security, which convened from 16-18
November 2009, in Rome, Italy, world
leaders adopted a declaration in which
they pledged to: face the challenges
posed by climate change; renew efforts
to halve hunger by 2015; improve
international coordination and
governance for food security; and
reverse the downward trend in funding
for agriculture, food security and rural
development in developing countries.

ABS 8 ADOPTS CONSOLIDATED NEGOTIATING DOCUMENT, ESTABLISHES
INTERSESSIONAL PROCESS |

Montreal,
16 November—The
eighth meeting of the Ad Hoc Open-ended Working
Group on Access and Benefit-sharing (ABS) of the
Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), which
met from 9-15 November 2009, in Montreal,
Canada, continued the negotiation of an
international regime on ABS, in view of its
mandate to finalize the international regime and
to submit an instrument/instruments to
effectively implement the provisions in Articles
15 and 8(j) of the Convention and its three
objectives for consideration and adoption by COP
10 in October 2010.

CBD WORKING GROUP ON ARTICLE 8(J) MAKES PROGRESS |

Montreal,
7 November—The
sixth meeting of the Ad hoc Open-ended
Intersessional Working Group on Article 8(j) and
related provisions of the Convention on
Biological Diversity (CBD) convened from 2-6
November 2009, in Montreal, Canada, and worked
towards concluding negotiations on an ethical
code of conduct to ensure respect for the
cultural and intellectual heritage of indigenous
and local communities.

ITTC-45 PLEDGES US$9.3 MILLION IN FUNDING FOR FOREST
MANAGEMENT |

Geneva,
15 November—The
45th session of the International Tropical
Timber Council (ITTC-45) and the associated
sessions of its four Committees convened in
Yokohama, Japan, from 9-14 November 2009, during
which delegates considered the current status of
implementation of the International Tropical
Timber Organization Thematic Programmes,
including on Reducing Deforestation and Forest
Degradation and Enhancing Environmental Services
in Tropical Forests (REDDES), and on Tropical
Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade (TFLET),
among other agenda items.

AFRICAN POLICY MAKERS CONSIDER WATER ISSUES |

|
Johannesburg,
14 November—The
Second African Water Week took place from 9-11
November, followed by the second Pan-African
Implementation and Partnership Conference on
Water, on 11 November. Both meetings fed into
AMCOW 7, which convened from 12-13 November, and
concluded with the adoption of reports from the
Council of Ministers and Executive Committee, as
well as the Johannesburg Ministerial Statement.

MOP-21 AGREES 30 DECISIONS, HFC AMENDMENT PROPOSAL WITHDRAWN |

Port Ghalib,
9 November—The
21st Meeting of the Parties to the Montreal
Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone
Layer (MOP-21), which meet in Port Ghalib,
Egypt, from 4-8 November 2009, adopted 30
decisions, including on examining alternatives
to hydrochlorofluorocarbons and environmentally
sound management of ozone depleting substance
banks.

BARCELONA CLIMATE CHANGE TALKS SET STAGE FOR COPENHAGEN |

|
Barcelona, 7 November—The
resumed ninth session of the Ad Hoc
Working Group on Further Commitments for Annex I
Parties under the Kyoto Protocol (AWG-KP 9) and
resumed seventh session of the Ad Hoc
Working Group on Long-term Cooperative Action
under the Convention (AWG-LCA 7) were held from
2-6 November 2009, in Barcelona, Spain, bringing
together approximately 3,100 participants for
the final round of negotiations under both AWGs
before the 15th Conference of the Parties (COP
15) to the UNFCCC in Copenhagen, Denmark, from
7-18 December 2009.
