IPCC 31 FOCUSES ON FIFTH ASSESSMENT REPORT |

Bali,
30 October—The 31st session of the
Intergovernmental Panel on Climate
Change (IPCC) convened from 26-29
October 2009, in Nusa Dua, Bali,
Indonesia, with approximately 350
participants in attendance. The meeting
focused primarily on the scoping of the
Fifth Assessment Report (AR5). Among
other decisions, delegates agreed to
treat Article 2 of the UN Framework
Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) as
a cross-cutting theme in the AR5 and to
revise the timetable for the preparation
of the report.

UNFF ADOPTS DECISION ON FOREST FINANCING |
|

31 October—Member
States to the UN Forum on Forests (UNFF) adopted
a decision on means of implementation on 30
October 2009, during a special session of the
ninth session of UNFF (UNFF 9), held at UN
Headquarters in New York, US.

MERCURY OEWG AGREES RULES OF PROCEDURE FOR INC PROCESS |

Bangkok,
24 October—The
Ad hoc Open-ended Working Group (OEWG) to
Prepare for the Intergovernmental Negotiating
Committee (INC) on Mercury convened from 19-23
October 2009, in Bangkok, Thailand. The OEWG
agreed to recommend rules of procedure to the
INC, as well as intersessional work for the
Secretariat to prepare documentation for the
first meeting of the INC, to be held in
Stockholm, Sweden, from 7-11 June 2010.

CGRFA 12 ADOPTS STRATEGIC PLAN, DISCUSSES ABS ISSUES |

Rome,
24 October—The
twelfth regular session of the FAO Commission on
Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (CGRFA
12), which convened from 19-23 October 2009, in
Rome, Italy, adopted: the Strategic Plan
2010-2017 for implementation of its multi-year
programme of work; a resolution on policies and
arrangements for ABS for genetic resources for
food and agriculture; and a funding strategy for
implementation of the Global Plan of Action for
animal genetic resources.
