MIGRATORY WATERBIRD CONFERENCE CONVENES IN
MADAGASCAR |

Antananarivo,
18 September—The
fourth Meeting of the Parties (MOP4) to the
Agreement on the Conservation of
African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds, also
known as the African-Eurasian Waterbird
Agreement (AEWA), is meeting from 15-19
September 2008, in Antananarivo, Madagascar.
The MOP4 agenda includes the implementation
of the Agreement and Action Plan,
International Implementation Priorities
2006-2008, Communication Strategy, and
African-Eurasian Flyways Global Environment
Facility (GEF) Project.

IFCS FORUM VI CONVENES IN SENEGAL |
|
Dakar,
18 September—The
Intergovernmental Forum on Chemical Safety (IFCS)
VI is convening from 15-19 September 2008,
in Dakar, Senegal, under the theme “Global
Partnership in Chemical Safety Contributing
to the 2020 Goal.” During the meeting,
delegates have considered the future of IFCS,
as well as: exchanged information on
nanotechnology and manufactured
nanomaterials to help raise awareness about
the potential new opportunities, challenges
and risks posed by nanotechnology; addressed
substitution and alternatives for harmful
substances and processes with less harmful
ones or with non-chemical alternatives; and
considered integrated pest management and
key elements of pesticide risk reduction
strategies.

COUNTRY-LED INITIATIVE DISCUSSES FOREST FINANCING |
|
|
Paramaribo,
13 September—The
Country-Led Initiative on Financing for
Sustainable Forest Management (SFM) in
Support of the UN Forum on Forests (UNFF):
The Paramaribo Dialogue met from 8-12
September 2008 in Paramaribo, Suriname.
Participants discussed: producer, consumer
and community perspectives on financing SFM;
financing from ecosystem services; and
institutional and governance strategies at
the national and international levels for
increasing SFM financing. A Co-Chair’s
Summary Report was produced, which aims to
inform discussions at the meeting of the
UNFF Ad Hoc Expert Group on Finance, to be
held from 10-14 November 2008 in Vienna,
Austria, and at UNFF8’s deliberations on
adopting a decision on SFM financing, which
will take place from 20 April-1 May 2009, in
New York, US.

IPCC ELECTS BUREAU |
|
|
Geneva,
5 September—The
Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)
met for its 29th session from 31 August to 4
September 2008, in Geneva, Switzerland,
during which participants re-elected
Rajendra Pachauri as IPCC Chair, and also
elected a new IPCC Bureau and Bureau of the
Task Force on National Greenhouse Gas
Inventories. Participants also continued
discussions on the future of the IPCC,
agreed to create a scholarship for young
climate change scientists from developing
countries with the funds of the Nobel Peace
Prize, and asked the Bureau to consider a
scoping meeting on disaster risk reduction.
