HIGH-LEVEL CONFERENCE ON WORLD FOOD SECURITY ADOPTS
DECLARATION |

Rome,
6 June—The
High-Level Conference on World Food
Security: the Challenges of Climate Change
and Bioenergy convened in Rome, Italy, from
3-6 June 2008. Jacques Diouf, FAO
Director-General, noted the meeting had
become a “de facto summit,” in light
of the food crisis. Delegates adopted a
Declaration that outlines immediate as well
as medium- and long-term measures to ensure
food security.

BONN CLIMATE TALKS UNDERWAY |
|
Bonn,
6 June—The
latest round of talks under the UN Framework
Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and
the Kyoto Protocol are underway in Bonn,
Germany. The talks, running from 2-13 June
2008, are focusing in particular on the
period after 2012, when the Kyoto Protocol’s
first commitment period expires. The
meetings include the twenty-eighth sessions
of the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and
Technological Advice (SBSTA) and the
Subsidiary Body for Implementation (SBI) of
the UNFCCC, taking place from 4-13 June. In
addition, the second session of the Ad Hoc
Working Group on Long-term Cooperative
Action under the Convention (AWG-LCA 2), and
the resumed fifth session of the Ad Hoc
Working Group on Further Commitments for
Annex I Parties under the Kyoto Protocol (AWG-KP
5) are being held from 2-12 June.

CBD COP 9 ADOPTS THIRTY-SEVEN DECISIONS |

Bonn,

May—The
ninth Conference of the Parties (COP 9) to the
Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), which
convened from 19-30 May 2008, in Bonn, Germany,
adopted 37 decisions on a wide range of items. Key
agreements included the adoption of a roadmap for
negotiations on access and benefit-sharing, a
Resource Mobilization Strategy, scientific criteria
for marine protected areas, and language cautioning
against ocean fertilization.

UNCCD CONVENES HIGH-LEVEL POLICY DIALOGUE |
|
|
Bonn, 28 May—The
UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD)
convened a High-Level Policy Dialogue to discuss
“Coping with Today’s Global Challenges in the
Context of the UNCCD Strategy” on 27 May 2008, in
Bonn, Germany. The Dialogue consisted of three
segments, which addressed policy development,
mobilizing for a forward-looking strategy, and
Parties’ views on responses to emerging challenges.

GLOBAL RENEWABLE ENERGY FORUM CONVENES IN BRAZIL |
|
Foz
do Iguaçu, 22 May—The
Global Renewable Energy Forum convened in
Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil, from 18-21 May 2008,
to promote dialogue on strengthening
interregional bonds and to set up joint
actions between countries and regions that
aim to reduce poverty and enhance energy
security through the use of renewable energy
sources. During the Forum, which was jointly
organized by the UN Industrial Development
Organization (UNIDO), the Brazilian Ministry
of Mines and Energy, Eletrobras and Itaipu
Binacional, UNIDO and some participating
countries and institutions developed
bilateral agreements and memoranda of
understanding.
