Highlights for Tuesday, 31 March 2009

Delegates convened for the second day of the UN-HABITAT Governing Council on Tuesday, 31 March 2009. The Committee of the Whole (COW) met throughout the morning, while the high-level segment met all day. A drafting committee also met all day.
 
In the high-level segment and the COW, delegates continued debate on UN-HABITAT activities, discussed the GC 22 special theme and considered UN-HABITAT’s work programme and the budget for the biennium 2010-2011. The drafting committee considered inter alia the World Urban Forum, guidelines on access to basic services for all and south-south cooperation in human settlements.
 
Various parallel events took place including the Commonwealth Consultative Group on Human Settlements, and the Dialogue for Investing in Youth-Led Development.

Sunil Kumar Singh, India, noted that the number of housing units required in urban areas in India is rapidly increasing.

Commonwealth Consultative Group on Human Settlements meeting

Participants discussed the progress report and strategic plan 2007-2010 of the Commonwealth Action on Human Settlements (ComHabitat) and ComHabitat’s work on the State of the Cities report.

The Dialogue on Investing in Youth-Led Development

Participants explored the concept of youth-led development, with the aim of generating proposals that would sharpen the goals of the Opportunities Fund for Urban Youth-Led Development.
