Third Vienna Energy Forum (VEF 2013)

28-30 May 2013 | Vienna, Austria

VEF 2013The Vienna Energy Forum (VEF) 2013 was held on 28-30 May 2013 at the Hofburg Palace in Vienna, Austria. The event brought together over 1621 participants from 116 countries, including 19 ministers, as well as policymakers, experts, and representatives from the private sector and civil society. Organized jointly by the UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), the Austrian Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs, and the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), the meeting addressed sustainable energy in the context of negotiating a post-2015 development framework, a process initiated at the June 2012 UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD or Rio+20). Convening one year after Rio+20, VEF 2013 addressed the theme, “One year after Rio+20: the energy future we want.”

The three-day Forum included three ministerial and high-level dignitaries segments, two high-level panels, five plenary sessions and five parallel sessions addressing a range of issues including energy access, financing the energy future and the development of an energy sustainable development goal. Participants also considered the “Key Recommendations on Energy in the Post-2015 Development Framework” directed to the UN High Level Panel on the Post-2015 Development Agenda (HLP).

The Forum also included special events of the UN Secretary-General’s Sustainable Energy For All (SE4ALL) initiative, as well as a series of side events. Several memoranda of understanding were signed during the Forum, including between the East African Community, UNIDO and the Austrian Government, for an East African regional center on renewable energy and energy efficiency.
