| On Tuesday, 21 October, delegates to the
West Asia Regional Implementation Meeting in preparation for
CSD-12 held a brief closing Plenary to adopt the meeting’s report.
A consolidated report on follow-up activities in the field of
water, sanitation and human settlements, including comments made
during the meeting, will be submitted to CSD-12 as the input from
the Arab region.

Mahmoud Hewehy, Ministry of State for Environmental
Affairs of Egypt, chairs the closing Plenary of the meeting. |

|

Emad Adly, Arab Network for Environment and Development,
stresses that poverty is a key issue in the Arab region and should
be the basis of the reports on water, sanitation, and human
settlements. |
|
|
|
|

Regarding the implementation of
the WSSD outcomes on water, sanitation, and human settlements,
Tunisia proposes to include a specific reference to UN General
Assembly Resolution 265/57 on the World Solidarity Fund. |
|
|

Fatma El Din El Mallah, League of
Arab States, notes that the reports on water, sanitation, and human
settlements will be consolidated, before their transmission to
CSD-12, in order to avoid overlap and repetition. |

|

Mohamed Ghemari, Islamic
Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO), proposes
that the Technical Secretariat of the Joint Committee on Environment
and Development in the Arab Region and ISESCO coordinate their
actions to enhance the implementation of Arab programmes for
sustainable development. |

Syria underlines the importance of
ESCWA�s work strategy and requests to be provided with more detailed
information in order to be in a position to make a positive
contribution to its improvement.
