CSD-16 Discusses Rural Development

The sixteenth session of the Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD-16) convened for its second day on Tuesday, 6 May 2008, at United Nations headquarters in New York. Delegates continued their consideration of the thematic cluster for the 2008/2009 implementation cycle - agriculture, rural development, land, drought, desertification and Africa.

During the morning, delegates heard presentations and exchanged views on the theme of rural development and considered regional issues for Asia and the Pacific and Latin America and the Caribbean.

During the afternoon delegates heard presentations and exchanged views on the theme of agriculture and rural development and considered regional issues for the UNECE. An interactive dialogue was held with Major Groups during the late afternoon.

The International Federation of Business and Professional Women presented an evening side event, "Mobilizing Communities for Reforestation and Water Protection: 'Tree is life'."
An evening side event by the Centre on Housing Rights and Evictions addressed "Secure Land Rights in Africa Grassroots and 'Legal Empowerment' Strategies."
