Conference on Contributions of Forests to a Green Economy

4-7 October 2011 | Bonn, Germany

Conference on Contributions of Forests to a Green Economy
This country-led initiative of Germany, with support from Finland, Austria, the UN Forum on Forests (UNFF) and the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), will convene a conference on “Contributions of Forests to a Green Economy,” from 4-7 October 2011, in Bonn, Germany.

Held during the International Year of Forests (IYOF2011), this conference is intended to contribute both to the preparatory process for the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD or Rio+20) in June 2012, which has as one of its twin themes “Green Economy in the Context of Sustainable Development and Poverty Eradication,” and to the tenth session of UNFF (UNFF-10) in January 2013, which has the theme “Forests and Economic Development.”

The four-day event will be divided into plenary and parallel working group sessions. Plenary sessions will look at current contributions of forests to local and national economic development and the role of the forest sector in transitioning to a Green Economy. Plenary also will discuss how forest can contribute to development and eradicating poverty while providing environmental services such as watershed protection, protection against land degradation, carbon sequestration and resilience to climate change.

The themes of the four working groups will be: “forest valuation and financing,” which will include discussions on payment for ecosystem services and Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD); “institutions, governance and stakeholders”; “benefiting people,” which is to discuss how to ensure that forest-dependent local and indigenous communities effectively participate in forest policymaking and management, and benefit from conservation and sustainable use of forest resources; and “technology transfer, capacity building, bio-based products and role of the private sector.”

The Conference is expected to produce a “chair’s report” summarizing conference discussions and outcomes that will be transmitted to UNCSD and UNFF10.
