UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Workshop on Technology Needs Assessments

Highlights for Wednesday, 1 June 2011
On Wednesday, 1 June, the UNFCCC Workshop on Technology Needs Assessments (TNAs) convened, with the objective of sharing good practices and lessons learned form non-Annex I parties’ experiences conducting TNAs, identifying specific needs and practical actions to assist parties in implementing results of TNAs, and discussing the roles of TNAs in the context of implementation of the Technology Mechanism as established in Decision 1/CP.16 (Cancun Agreements).

Following brief welcoming statements, the workshop commenced, chaired by Kishan Kumarsingh (Trinidad and Tobago), with a session on setting the scene, including background information and workshop expectations. During the second session, countries presented national perspectives on lessons learned and good practices in conducting TNAs, including Cambodia, Costa Rica, Mali, Peru, Senegal and China.

In the afternoon, international perspectives on lessons learned and good practices in conducting TNAs were shared, including via the experiences of the UN Development Programme, Climate Technology Initiative (CTI), and the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ). Discussions on Wednesday concluded with a third session on implementing, i.e. funding, the results of TNAs, including the perspectives of the Global Environment Facility (GEF), the UNFCCC Secretariat, the CTI Private Financing Advisory Network, the Global Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Fund.

Cyrille Arnould, Global Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Fund (GEEREF) and European Investment Bank (EIB), presented on the GEEREF as a “funder of funds.”
