Dialogue on Climate Change Adaptation
for Land and Water Management

16-17 April 2009 | Nairobi, Kenya

A view of the meeting room.
The Dialogue on Climate Change Adaptation for Land and Water Management was held from 16-17 April 2009, in Nairobi, Kenya. The Dialogue addressed the need to: tackle existing problems in land and water management to build resilience to climate change; strengthen institutions for land and water management; improve global climate impact models; and increase financing targeted towards the most vulnerable people.

On Thursday, participants were introduced to the Dialogue Process, and heard reports from the Regional Workshops in Hanoi, Vietnam, and Bamako, Mali. In the afternoon they considered the draft Nairobi Statement, which included the Guiding Principles on Land and Water Management for Climate Change Adaptation, making suggestions to improve the statement.

On Friday, the high-level segment opened with welcoming remarks from UNEP Executive Director, Achim Steiner and Denmark’s Minister for Development Cooperation, Ulla Tørnæs. Participants heard statements from ministers and representatives of international and regional organizations on the draft Nairobi Statement and the way forward towards the UNFCCC fifteenth Conference of the Parties in Copenhagen in December 2009. Participants then adopted the Nairobi Statement. The meeting ended at 3:14pm.
