SB-18 Highlights, Saturday, June 7th

Today at SB-18, the CDM executive board met during the afternoon. Contact groups met throughout the day to consider the Special Climate Change Fund, methodological Issues (Articles 5,6 & 7 of the Kyoto protocol and land use/CDM), capacity-building, as well as IPCC Third Assessment Report.

MEETING OF THE CDM EXECUTIVE BOARD

The Executive Board of the CDM (Clean Development Mechanism) met throughout the weekend and discussed the 15 proposed methodologies. The board discussed the work plan including: the accreditation of operational entities; methodologies for baselines and monitoring plans; matters related to the registration of CDM project activities; CDM registry; and modalities for collaboration with SBSTA.

The Special Climate Change Fund

Co-Chair Jaap Rooimans said the contact group would define and prioritize the activities, programmes and measures to be financed under the Special Climate Change Fund (SCCF), and provide operational guidance to the GEF.

Methodological Issues: issues relating to Articles 5,7 and 8 of the Kyoto Protocol

This contact group met to deliberate on draft COP and COP/MOP decisions regarding training programmes for ERTs, and text suggested by the drafting group on the code of conduct for the treatment of confidential data under Article 5.2 (adjustments).

Chair Dechen Tsering circulated draft conclusions for consideration in this group. Since most regional groups had been unable to consult, the meeting was adjourned. The Chair will conduct informal consultations.

The Third Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change

This group met to consider the Co-chairs' draft conclusions. Delegates discussed at length whether to consider an integrated approach to mitigation and adaptation.

Methodological issues: land use, land-use change and forestry/clean development mechanism

This group discussed socioeconomic impacts on aforestation and reforestation CDM projects.

CLIMATE CHANGE KIOSK

Located in the foyer of the conference venue (the Maritim Hotel), the Climate Change Kiosk is staffed daily between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. Its primary goal is to provide information about climate change and the secretariat.
