Highlights from Monday, 1 December

The fourteenth Conference of the Parties (COP 14) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the fourth Conference of the Parties serving as the Meeting of Parties to the Kyoto Protocol (COP/MOP 4) opened on Monday morning. In the afternoon, the opening meetings of the twenty-ninth sessions of the Subsidiary Body for Implementation (SBI 29) and Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA 29) were held. The fourth session of the Ad Hoc Working Group on Long-term Cooperative Action (AWG-LCA 4) and the resumed sixth session of the Ad Hoc Working Group on Further Commitments for Annex I Parties under the Kyoto Protocol (AWG-KP 6) also began their work. Opening

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk (left) urged “global solidarity” and said the economic crisis should not dampen countries' determination to combat climate change. Outgoing COP President Rachmat Witoelar, Indonesia (right) opened the meeting. He described this meeting as an important “bridge from Bali to Copenhagen.”

 
 

IPCC Chair Rajendra Pachauri (left) highlighted scientific realities and urged consideration of whether limiting temperature rise to 2°C would be sufficient.

 
 
COP 14 President Maciej Nowicki, Minister of Environment of Poland (left), stated that the key goal in Poznan was to articulate a “shared vision.” Danish Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen (right), said combating climate change was the right choice both from an environmental and economic perspective.
