Massive March in Montréal

On Saturday, delegates convened in contact groups and informal consultations on numerous issues, including Protocol Article 3.9 (future commitments), the CDM Executive Board's report, joint implementation, the financial mechanism, technology transfer, capacity building under the Kyoto Protocol, research and systematic observation, non-Annex I communications, the Kyoto Protocol's international transaction log, compliance, the IPCC Special Report on carbon dioxide capture and storage, and privileges and immunities for those serving on bodies established under the Kyoto Protocol. Above: outside the conference center, thousands of people marched through downtown Montreal, demanding action on climate change.

Contact Groups

The contact group on administrative, financial and institutional matters addressed two matters: the institutional linkage of the secretariat to the UN, and privileges and immunities for individuals serving on bodies established under the Kyoto Protocol. Shown: Seth Ofaso, Secretariat, Chair Masao Nakayama, Micronesia, CDM Executive Board Chair Sushma Gera, Canada, and Vice-Chair Lu Xuedu, China.

The contact group on future commitments, co-chaired by Alf Wills, South Africa, and David Drake, Canada, considered a compilation of Conference Room Paper (CRP) submissions by the G-77/China, EU and Japan.

José Romero, Switzerland, highlighted the different logistical requirements for Annex I and non-Annex I informal consultations.

Some delegates sat up on the floor of the crowded room.

Co-Chair Drake presented the compilation of submissions.

An informal contact group was set up for further consultations on future commitments, which continued meeting into Saturday evening.

In the contact group on IPCC Carbon Capture and Storage, co-chaired by William Agyemang-Bonsu, Ghana, and Thomas Verheye, European Commission, delegates met informally in the morning to consider the draft text, agreeing on the workshop objective of increasing understanding of carbon dioxide capture and storage and covering the relevant provisions of the forthcoming 2006 IPCC Guidelines for National Greenhouse Gas Inventories. In the afternoon, contact group delegates agreed on the draft text.
March

Saturday afternoon's marchers called for immediate action on climate change.

The march included drummers...

singing grannies...

...and coordinated marching groups.

Some marchers had messages for Stéphane Dion, Canada's Environment Minister and President of COP11 and COP/MOP1...

...while others preferred to address the situation in Washington.

Jennifer Morgan, WWF, addresses the crowd of marchers while Steven Guilbeault, Greenpeace Canada, looks on.

The march ended with a large rally.
