The Clean Technology Fund (CTF) countries’ meeting took place today in Istanbul, Turkey, in association with the Climate Investment Funds (CIF) 2012 Partnership Forum that will convene on 6-7 November. The CTF is one of the two Climate Investment Funds (CIF) focusing on large-scale country-driven projects on renewable energy, sustainable transportation, and energy efficiency. During the meeting, countries shared their experiences and discussed progress on their investment plans, challenges encountered and lessons learnt.

In the evening, a master class on wind power and biodiversity issues took place, addressing negative impacts of wind farms on birds and bats. Egypt, Turkey and South Africa presented country case studies followed by presentations by Ethiopia, US, BirdLife International, and the World Bank. The discussion identified the need for: a better understanding of bird and bat behavior; environmental impact assessments; post-construction monitoring and mitigation of negative impacts; legal and regulatory frameworks; national capacity building; and private sector engagement.
