Twenty-sixth Meeting of the Animals Committee (AC26), Joint Meeting of the Animals and Plants Committees and Twentieth Meeting of the Plants Committee (PC20) of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES)

15-20 March 2012, 22-24 March 2012 and 26-30 March 2012 | Geneva, Switzerland and Dublin, Ireland
Highlights for Thursday, 22 March 2012
On Thursday, in plenary, Jimmy Deenihan, T.D., Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht opened the joint meeting of the CITES AC/Plant Committee (PC) in Dublin, Ireland, bringing together over 150 delegates. Minister Deenihan underscored the need for CITES to protect wild flora and fauna through sustainable trade. He thanked the many organizations that made possible the hosting of the meetings, especially the US Fish and Wildlife Service. Following this welcome, Margarita Clemente, PC Chair, extended a warm welcome to the members of the two Committees. She briefly discussed PC matters and noted that six working groups would meet, starting on Monday 26 March.

Participants then began discussing the agenda items. On the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES), Mexico, supported by the representative of Europe, highlighted the importance of CITES representation at IPBES and in its future development. On the report of the climate change working group, many expressed the view that additional guidance on climate change was not necessary. On RST, TRAFFIC underscored the difficulty of analyzing changes in the conservation status, management and trade of the species considered for RST, and the importance of communication issues in the RST process where species have been retained due to lack of response from range states. On NDFs, the AC representative of North America, welcomed a resolution that provides guiding principles for use by Scientific Authorities when making NDFs and said that a non-prescriptive approach is preferred in informing NDFs. Canada noted the important role of traditional and ecological knowledge in making NDFs.
