COP4 convenes for its final day
The fourth meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP4) to the Stockholm
Convention convened for its final day in Geneva, Switzerland on Friday,
8 May 2009.
During the morning plenary session, delegates heard statements by ministers and heads of delegation, as well as an address by UNEP Executive Director Achim Steiner.
Contact groups on financial resources and technical assistance, budget, and non-compliance convened throughout the day.
The afternoon plenary reconvened at 4.30pm for discussion and adoption of decisions.
After adopting the report of the
meeting (UNEP/POPS/COP.4/L.1), plenary
was suspended until 6:30pm.

After adopting the report of the meeting (UNEP/POPS/COP.4/L.1), plenary was suspended until 6:30pm, after which it reconvened to adopt the remainder of the report (UNEP/POPS/COP.4/L.1). The meeting was then suspended to all time for the technical assistance and financial resources contact groups to complete their work. At 12:30am plenary reconvened and a political compromise was announced relating to the listing of new chemicals and a decision on financial resources. Plenary was suspended again for information consultations and to allow time for the preparation of a decision document. At 4:00am delegates agreed to an historic decision to list nine new chemicals in the Convention, a decision on financial resources and other outstanding decisions. COP4 President Moaiyeri gavelled the meeting to a close at 4:37 am.
