Highlights for Friday, 14 November 2003
 

On Friday, Working Group I met briefly in the morning to consider a Conference Room Paper on the programme of work for protected areas, and adopt its report. Closing Plenary convened in morning and afternoon sessions to discuss preparations for SBSTTA-10 and 11, adopt the meeting's report, including recommendations from the meeting, and hear closing statements.

Working Group I: 


Jan Plesnik, Czech Republic, reported on the Contact Group that met on Thursday night to consider the PoW on PAs.

Plenary:


Chair Robert Andren (Sweden) reported on the work of WG-I, which had worked into the morning.


Chair Asghar Fazel (Iran) reported on the work of WG-II, which had overcome many challenges.

 


Closing Statements: 

 

Hamdallah Zedan, the Executive Secretary of the CBD, commended delegations’ commitment despite the challenging and heavy agenda. He stressed that SBSTTA-9 had laid a secure foundation for COP-7.



Liberia, on behalf of the AFRICAN GROUP, called for a legally-binding agreement or a CBD-specific funding mechanism.




Malaysia, on behalf of the Asia Pacific Group, reiterated the invitation to COP-7 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.



Brazil called for a regional preparatory meeting prior to COP-7.



Mauritius, on behalf of the Small Island Developing States, said that biodiversity was crucial, particularly in fragile and vulnerable marine and coastal ecosystems.



Slovakia, on behalf of the Eastern and Central European Region, said it had been difficult to find consensus in preparation for COP-7, but progress had been made, particularly on the key issue of protected areas.




Italy, as the President of the EU, said discussions had been constructive and fruitful and that SBSTTA-9 would assist in the achievement of the 2010 target.



Jordan thanked those countries who had facilitated the participation of the Arab States.



Chair Yeboah (center) thanked all delegates for their commitment and looked forward to meeting them at COP-7 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in February. Chair Yeboah then gaveled the meeting to a close at 6:12 p.m.
