Delegates to the tenth meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA-10) of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) convened in working groups in the morning and closing Plenary in the afternoon.

Working Groups:



Working Group II (WG-II) continued discussions on the CRP containing a work programme on island biodiversity, and adopted its report. CLOSING PLENARY:


SBSTTA-10 Chair Alfred Oteng-Yeboah (Ghana) opened the final Plenary in the afternoon. Delegates adopted the meeting’s report, including its recommendations, addressed other matters, and heard closing statements. Above photo L-R: View of the panel during closing plenary.


Ukraine called on delegates to step up efforts to achieve the 2010 target.	Liberia welcomed the adoption of the programme of work on island biodiversity


Hamdallah Zedan, CBD Executive Secretary (above), said that CBD enters a new phase with the adoption of the last thematic programme and thanked Chair Yeboah on the successful completion of SBSTTA-10.	Braulio Ferriera de Souza Dias (Brazil) said that Brazil is looking forward to hosting CBD COP-8.

SBSTTA-10 proposed elements for a work programme on island biodiversity, and confirmed the suitability of various indicators to assess progress towards the 2010 target at the global level. It also, inter alia: provided advice on the integration of global outcome-oriented targets into the Convention’s work programmes; adopted terms of reference for an Ad Hoc Technical Expert Group (AHTEG) on Biodiversity and Climate Change; recommended steps for the review of implementation of the Global Taxonomy Initiative (GTI) programme of work; proposed options for a cross-cutting initiative on biodiversity for food and nutrition; and refined proposals for the application of ways and means to remove or mitigate perverse incentives. SBSTTA-10 also transmitted its comments on the report of the AHTEG on genetic use restriction technologies (GURTs) to the Article 8(j) Working Group, including that it could not reach consensus, and recommended that the COP determine the scope of the mandate of its bodies in relation to GURTs.
