Highlights for Thursday, 16 October 2014
CBD COP 12 & NP COP/MOP 1

The High-Level Segment convened throughout the day and adopted the Gangwon Declaration on Biodiversity for Sustainable Development. Working Group I addressed draft decisions on items under the Nagoya Protocol on capacity building, awareness raising, access and benefit-sharing clearing-house, and monitoring and reporting. Working Group I also considered COP draft decisions on retirement of decisions, biodiversity and human health, and support for implementation. Working Group II considered COP draft decisions on business and stakeholder engagement, engagement with sub-national and local governments, tourism development, synthetic biology, Article 8(j) and related provisions (terminology), biodiversity and climate change, and ecologically or biologically significant marine areas (EBSAs). SUSTAINABLE OCEAN INITIATIVE (SOI) HIGH-LEVEL MEETING
 
   
Sustainable Ocean Initiative convenes in the margins of the COP 12 High-Level Segment
   
 

Organized by the Korea Maritime Institute (KMI) and the CBD Secretariat and hosted by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF), Republic of Korea, this high-level meeting addressed the interests, needs and perspectives of various regions on the importance of marine biodiversity to sustainable development. The event also focused on the value of SOI in supporting national efforts to improve conservation and sustainable use of marine biodiversity. Following opening remarks and keynote speeches by political leaders, including heads of state, a ministerial roundtable addressed common challenges and priorities to achieve the Aichi targets, with particular focus on Targets 6, 10 and 11 on marine and coastal biodiversity.

A panel, consisting of leading managers, policy experts and practitioners, discussed ways and means to facilitate scientific and technical cooperation to accelerate implementation toward the achievement of the Aichi targets.

Rio Conventions Pavilion Event

Transformative Initiatives in Biodiversity Mainstreaming and Financing
The event showcased interconnected initiatives, including United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)'s Biodiversity Finance Initiative and others that aim to help mainstream biodiversity and ecosystems services - and their values - into national and sectoral policy frameworks, accounting systems and budgeting processes. These include globally developed standards or approaches to be adapted to national circumstances.
