The High Level Segment of the First Conference of Ministers Responsible for Meteorology in Africa, met for a second day on Friday, 16 April 2010 in Nairobi, Kenya.

In the morning, delegates met and heard ministerial statements.

In the afternoon, they met to discuss and adopt the Ministerial Declaration.

The Conference was gavelled to a close by Chair Kajembe at 5:19pm.

The High Level Segment of the First Conference of Ministers Responsible for Meteorology in Africa, opened on Thursday, 15 April 2010 in Nairobi, Kenya.

In the morning, delegates met in an opening plenary session, and heard addresses from Margareta Walhström, UN Under-Secretary-General, UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR), Rhoda Peace Tumusiime, Commissioner, Commission for Rural Economy and Agriculture, AU, and Michel Jarruad, Secretary-General, WMO.

The Conference was officially opened by Kenya's Minister of Forestry and Wildlife, Noah Wekesa.

In the afternoon, delegates adopted the Statement from the Experts' Meeting and commenced discussion on a draft of the Nairobi Ministerial Declaration.

The First Conference of Ministers Responsible for Meteorology in Africa, met for its third day on Wednesday, 14 April 2010 in Nairobi, Kenya.

In the morning, delegates met in two plenary sessions: a special session on aviation and a session on enhancing partnerships.

In the afternoon, delegates met in another special session on the Global Framework for Climate Services.

In a night session, they discussed the draft of the Experts' Statement and the draft declaration to be forwarded to the Ministerial Segment on Thursday.

Simeon Zoumara, Agency for Aerial Navigation Safety in Africa and Madagascar (ASECNA), made a brief presentation on his organization’s work and its relationship with national meteorological and hydrological services.
Jan Egeland, Co-Chair, High-Level Taskforce for the Global Framework for Climate Services, introduced the Framework, stressing its potential to influence sustainable global change.
Byung-Seong Chun, Korea Meteorological Administration, spoke on enhancing partnerships between KMA and East Africa.

Tuesday, 13 April 2010

The First Conference of Ministers Responsible for Meteorology in Africa, met for its second day on Tuesday, 13 April 2010 in Nairobi, Kenya.

In the morning, delegates met in two plenary sessions on disaster risk reduction and filling information gaps.

In the afternoon, delegates reconvened in the session on filling information gaps and thereafter participated in a sessions on capacity building and user perspectives.

Delegates also attended a number of side events throughout the day.

The First Conference of Ministers Responsible for Meteorology in Africa, opened under the theme "Investing in Weather and Climate Services for Development" on Monday, 12 April 2010 in Nairobi, Kenya.

Opening remarks on the first day of the expert segment were given by Ramadhan Seif Kajembe, Assistant Minister, Environment and Mineral Resources, Kenya, Joseph Mukabana, Kenyan Permanent Representative, World Meteorological Organization (WMO), Jerry Lengoasa, Deputy Secretary-General, WMO, and Olushola Olayide Sodeko, African Union Commission (AUC).

Participants met in morning plenary to hear the objectives of the conference and adopted the agenda of the conference. During the afternoon, participants met to discuss: meeting development needs for providing weather, water and climate services on the continent; and the benefits of meteorological, hydrological and climate services.
