Weekend
highlights, Saturday and Sunday, 24-25 August 2002
Over the weekend of 24-25 August 2002, informal consultations
for the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) have
been underway at the Sandton Convention Centre in
Johannesburg, South Africa. Chaired by Amb. Dumisani Kumalo
(South Africa) the consultations have been held in the
Vienna-style setting involving input from key states and
negotiating blocks and have focused on the outstanding issues
in the Draft Plan of Implementation of the World Summit on
Sustainable Development (A/CONF.199/L.1).
 Negotiations
(right)are
proceeding paragraph by paragraph through the text. The group
has already referred a number of the most contentious issues
to small group deliberations and formed a contact group to
address language related to means of implementation, trade and
finance.
 More complete information on the negotiating background to
the WSSD and coverage of the informal consultations will be
available on the morning of Monday, 26 August 2002.
